This paper reports the effects of nickel film interleaves on the interlaminar shear strength(ILSS) of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites(CFRPs). A nickel thin film was deposited onto the prepreg by radio frequency(RF) sputtering at room temperature. The ILSS of the nickel film interleaved hybrid composites was increased compared to that of the composites without interleaves. To understand the mechanism of enhancement of the ILSS, the fracture surface of the tested specimens was examined by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). The metal interleaves were acted as a reinforcement for the matrix rich interface and the shear property of their composites improved by enhancing the resistance to matrix cracking.
The effect of carbon fiber orientation on the tribological properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites used as a reflecting material for the electromagnetic wave has been investigated. It was found that the carbon fiber/epoxy composite which slides normal to prepreg lay-up direction had less friction and wear that those slides parallel to prepreg fiber lay-up direction due to the increase of delamination between carbon fiber and epoxy. Composite with unidirectional orientation($0/0^{\circ}$) had higher tribological properties than those with multidirectional orientation($0/45/90/-45^{\circ}$ and $0/90^{\circ}$) when the sliding direction was normal to prepreg lay-up direction. This was caused by the debonding between carbon fiber and epoxy which is proportional to contact area between the sliding surface and carbon fiber. Opposite results have been found when the sliding direction was parallel to prepreg lay-up direction due tot he tensile force applied on carbon fiber. In addition, it was shown that wear factor increased with increasing sliding velocity but the friction coefficient did not depend upon the sliding velocity.

Carbon fiber epoxy composite materials are widely used in the structures of aircrafts, robots and other machines because of their high specific stiffness, high specific strength and damping. In order for the composite materials to be used in the robot structure or machine element, bearing mounting and joining surfaces must be provided, which require accurate machining. In this paper, the machinability and tool wear characteristics of the milling operation of the carbon fiber epoxy composite materials were experimentally measured. The tool wear mechanism and the Taylor tool wear constants were determined. Also, the surface roughness of milling operation was measured w.r.t. cutting speed and feed.
Electrically conductive carbon fiber/high density polyethylene (CF/HDPE) composite films were fabricated by new method, so called electron-ion technology (EIT) and the effects of CF epoxy sizing on the volumetric resistivity. tensile strength and interphase properties of the films were investigated. While epoxy sizing increased conductivity of composite films resulting from enhanced tunneling effect it reduced interphase adhesion between CF and HDPE because polar epoxy sizing and nonpolar HDPE are incompatible. Consequently epoxy sized CF(CF(S)) caused significant reduction in the volumetric resisitivity and tensile strength of composite films when compared with unsized CF(CF(U)). Epoxy sizing reduced nucleating efficiency of CF(S), therefore CF(S)/HDPE composite films showed nonuniform transcrystalline layer when compared with CF(U)/HDPE composite films.
In this work, two types of Ni-plating, namely electrolytical and electroless Ni-platings on carbon fiber surfaces, were carried out to enhance the impact resistance of composites. And the comparison between electrolytical and electroless methods on their impact properties of composite system was studied. The surface properties of carbon fibers were characterized using XRD, SEM, and contact angle measurements. The impact behaviors were investigated using an Izod type impact tester. As experimental results, it was observed that electrolessly plated Ni layers had Ni-P alloys on carbon fiber surfaces as revealed by XRD, and electrolytically Ni-plated carbon fibers showed higher surface free energies than those of the electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers. In particular, the impact strengths of electrolessly Ni-plated carbon fibers-reinforced plastics were strongly increased. These results were probably due to the difference of wettabilities according to the different types of Ni-plating methods.

Self-sensing on micro-failure, dispersion degree and relating properties, of carbon nanotube(CNT)/epoxy composites, were investigated using wettability, electro-micromechanical technique with acoustic emission(AE). Specimens were prepared from neat epoxy as well as composites with untreated and acid-treated CNT. Degree of dispersion was evaluated comparatively by measuring volumetric electrical resistivity and its standard deviation. Apparent modulus containing the stress transfer was higher for acid-treated CNT composite than for the untreated case. Applied cyclic loading responded well for a single carbon fiber/CNT-epoxy composite by the change in contact resistivity. The interfacial shear strength between a single carbon fiber and CNT-epoxy, determined in a fiber pullout test, was lower than that between a single carbon fiber and neat epoxy. Regarding on micro-damage sensing using electrical resistivity measurement with AE, the stepwise increment in electrical resistivity was observed for a single carbon fiber/CNT -epoxy composite. On the other hand, electrical resistivity increased infinitely right after the first carbon fiber breaks for a single carbon fiber/neat epoxy composite. The occurrence of AE events of added CNT composites was much higher than the neat epoxy case, due to micro failure at the interfaces by added CNTs.

The lignin-based carbon nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite has been prepared by immersing carbon nanofiber mat in epoxy resin solution in order to evaluate the physical and mechanical properties. The thermal and mechanical properties of the carbon nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite were analyzed using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and tensile tester. It was found that the thermal properties of the carbon nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite improved, with its glass-transition temperature ($T_g$) increased from $90.7^{\circ}C$ ($T_g$ of epoxy resin itself) to $106.9^{\circ}C$. The tensile strengths of carbon nanofiber mats made from both lignin-g-PAN copolymer and PAN were 7.2 MPa and 9.4 MPa, respectively. The resulting tensile strength of lignin-based carbon nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite became 43.0 MPa, the six times higher than that of lignin-based carbon nanofiber mats. The carbon nanofibers were pulled out after the tensile test of the carbon nanofiber reinforced epoxy composite due to high tensile strength (478.8 MPa) of an individual carbon nanofiber itself as well as low interfacial adhesion between fibers and matrices, confirmed by the SEM analysis.
Retention of interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of polymer composites at cryogenic temperature application is very important. In this work, single carbon tiber reinforced epoxy compositc was used to evaluate IFSS and apparent modulus under room and cryogenic temperatures. The property change of carbon and selected epoxy for particularly cryogenic temperature application were tested in tension and compression. Tensile strength and elongation of carbon fiber decreased at cryogenic temperature, whereas tensile modulus was almost same. On the other hand, epoxy matrix showed the increased tensile strength but decreased elongation. It can be due to maximum thermal contraction existing free volume in cryogenic temperature. IFSS increased up to $-10^{\circ}C$ and then decreased steadily. However, IFSS at cryogenic temperature was still similar to that at room temperature. This result is very useful to cryogenic application since selected epoxy toughness and interfacial adhesion can keep at such low temperature.

Recently, the applications of carbon fiber reinforced plastics (CFRPs) have become broader than ever when it comes to such industries as automotive, ships, aerospace and military because of their lightweight-ness and high mechanical properties. Thermosetting plastics like epoxy are frequently used as the binding matrix in CFRPs due to their high hardness, wetting characteristics and low viscosity. However, they cannot melted and remolded. For this reason, thermosetting plastic wastes have caused serious environmental problems with the production of fiber reinforced plastics. Thus, many studies have focused on the carbon fiber reinforced thermoplastics (CFRTPs) and recycling carbon fiber. In this study, recycled carbon fiber (RCF) was prepared from CFRPs using a pyrolysis method, which was employed to separate resin and carbon fiber. The degree of decomposition for epoxy resin was confirmed from thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The RCF was cut and ground to prepare a carbon fiber composite sheet (CFCS). CFCS was manufactured by applying recycled carbon fibers and various thermoplastic fibers. Various characterizations were performed, including morphological analyses of surface and cross-section, mechanical properties, and crystallization enthalpy of CFCS at different cooling conditions.
