Activation of Carbon Fiber in $\textrm{CO}_2$ Gas(l)-Activation process of carbon fiber- ($\textrm{CO}_2$ gas를 이용한 탄소섬유의 활성화(I)-탄소섬유의 활성화 과정)

  • 등방성 피치계 탄소섬유를 Co$_{2}$gas중에서 등온산화시켜 활성탄소섬유를 제조하였다. 산화된 섬유의 비표면적은 BET장치를 이용하여 측정하였다. Burn-off가 증가하여도 반응속도는 크게 감소하지 않았으며, 80$0^{\circ}C$와 90$0^{\circ}C$에서 산화된 섬유의 비표면적은 40%-60%의 burn-off에서 급격히 증가하다가 60%이상에서 감소하였다. 110$0^{\circ}C$에서 산화된 시편은 40%이상 burn-off되어도 비표면적은 크게 증가하지 않고 60%를 지나서도 계속해서 표면적이 증가하는 현상을 나타내었다. 100$0^{\circ}C$에서 60.4%의 burn-off가 일어난 산화섬유의 비표면적은 3,614$m^2$/g로 가장 큰 값이 얻어졌다. 등방성 탄소섬유는 미세한 흑연결정립들이 무질서한 배향을 하고 있으며, 미세기공벽으로 작용할 수 있는 결정립층이 많기 때문에 활성탄소섬유 제조를 위한 원료로 적합하다고 판단된다.

Enhanced Interfacial Adhesion of Carbon Fibers by Poly (arylene ether phosphine oxide) Coatings (Poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide) 코팅에 의한 탄소섬유의 계면 접착성 향상 연구)

  • Interfacial shear strength (IFSS) of poly(arylene ether phosphine oxide) (PEPO) coated carbon fibers was evaluated via microdroplet test and compared with results obtained from carbon fibers coated with poly(arylene ether sulfone) (PES), Udel$^{\circledR}$ P-1700 and Ultem$^{\circledR}$ 1000. Interfacial adhesion between thermoplastics and uncoated carbon fibers was also measured in order to understand the adheion mechanism. PEPO coated carbon fibers showed the highest IFSS, followed by PES, Udel and Ultem coated fibers. A similar trend was observed for thermoplastic/uncoated fibers. SEM analysis indicated that only PEPO coated fiber exhibited cohesie failure in the vinylester resin, while others showed failure at or near the interface of polymer coating and vinylester resin. The enhanced interfacial adhesion by PEPO coating could be attributed to the strong interaction of P = 0 moiety to the fiber as well as to the vinylester resin.

Shear Behavior of Reinforced Concrete Beams Strengthened with CFRP Strips (탄소섬유판 (CFRP Strip)으로 보강된 철근콘크리트 부재의 전단거동)

  • The main goal of this study was to examine the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP strups. Seven rectangular beams were tested. The test variables were the configuration types, spacing length of CFRP strips and the amount of reinforced stirrups bars. From this experimental study, the shear capacity of beams strengthened with CFRP increased significantly compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Maximum increase of ultimate shear strength was found about 100% more than that of the beam without a CFRP strip and the CFRP strips attached in the shear region can resist the occurrence of the initial shear cracks and the propagation of major shear cracks. In this test, most of the shear strengthened beams failed suddenly due to the debonding of CFRP strips. A calculation of the shear strength of reinforced beams strengthened with CFRP strips based on the effective stresses was conducted and the comparisons were made with the test results.

  • Researches on strengthening and rehabilitation methods are being widely conducted due to the deterioration of existing concrete structures. Use of externally bonded Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) strips for the rehabilitation is a cost-effective and time-saving method. Generally, the CFRP layout for the shear strengthening was a uni-directional layout. Many researches have focused on the variables of the uni-directional CFRP layout such as the amount of material, angle, and spacing. Pilot tests indicated that the effective confinement of the concrete member can be provided with the bi-directional CFRP layout than the uni-directional layout. Therefore, the test was carried out after the uni- and bi-directional strengthening work using the same amount of CFRP material. CFRP anchors were installed to prevent unexpected premature CFRP delamination failure before reaching CFRP fracture strain. The effectiveness of the CFRP anchor and bi-directional CFRP layout for shear strengthening was verified based on the principal tensile strain contours.

Effects of Sizing Treatment of Carbon Fibers on Mechanical Interfacial Properties of Nylon 6 Matrix Composites (탄소섬유의 사이징처리가 탄소섬유/나일론6 복합재료의 기계적 계면 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The sizing treatments of PAN-based carbon fiber surfaces were carried out in order to improve the interfacial adhesion in the carbon fibers/nylon6 composite system. The parameter to characterize the wetting performance and surface free energy of the sized fibers were determined by a contact angle method. The mechanical interfacial properties of the composites were investigated using critical stress intensity factor ($K_{IC}$). The cross-section morphologies of sized CFs/nylon6composites were observed by SEM. As the experimental results, it was observed that silane-based sizing treated carbon fibers showed higher surface free energies than other sizing treatments. In particular, the KIC of the sizing-treated carbon fibers reinforced composites showed higher values than those of untreated carbon fibers-reinforced composites. This result indicated that the increase in the surface free energy of the fibers leads to the improvement of the mechanical interfacial properties of carbon fibers/nylon6 composites.

Tribological Properties of Laminated Fiber Orientation in Carbon Fiber/Epoxy Composites for Reflecting Material of the Electromagnetic Wave (전자파 반사재료로 사용되는 탄소섬유/에폭시 복합재료의 적층 탄소섬유 방향성이 마찰특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The effect of carbon fiber orientation on the tribological properties of carbon fiber/epoxy composites used as a reflecting material for the electromagnetic wave has been investigated. It was found that the carbon fiber/epoxy composite which slides normal to prepreg lay-up direction had less friction and wear that those slides parallel to prepreg fiber lay-up direction due to the increase of delamination between carbon fiber and epoxy. Composite with unidirectional orientation($0/0^{\circ}$) had higher tribological properties than those with multidirectional orientation($0/45/90/-45^{\circ}$ and $0/90^{\circ}$) when the sliding direction was normal to prepreg lay-up direction. This was caused by the debonding between carbon fiber and epoxy which is proportional to contact area between the sliding surface and carbon fiber. Opposite results have been found when the sliding direction was parallel to prepreg lay-up direction due tot he tensile force applied on carbon fiber. In addition, it was shown that wear factor increased with increasing sliding velocity but the friction coefficient did not depend upon the sliding velocity.

  • Various surface treatment techniques can be applied onto the surface of carbon fibers to increase interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). In a commerciaI treatment, first, surface of carbon fiber was oxidized, after that, a sizing agent was coated to improve handleability and adhesion to the matrix. Carbon fiber reinforced composites (CFRC) which is made of these fibers show excellent ILSS but show low vaIues of impact strength In this study, reactive and ductile interphase was introduced between fiber and matrix to increase both the ILSS and impact strength. By using electric conductivity of carbon fibers, flexible polymers which have ionizable group, i.e., MVEMA and EMA, were coated onto the surface (oxidized) of carbon fiber by the technique of electrodeposition. ILSS and impact strength of composites were evaluated according to the surface treatments, i.e., commercial sizing treatment, interphase introduction, and without sizing treatment. Izod impact strength and ILSS of CFRC were simultaneously improved in thc thickness range of $0.08{\sim}0.12{\mu}m$ of MVEMA interphase. Water resistance of the composites was decreased by introducing MVEMA interphase.

Physical Properties and Electrical Conductivity of PAN-based Carbon Fiber Reinforced Paper (PAN계 탄소섬유 강화 종이의 물리적 특성 및 전기전도도)

  • Carbon fiber (CF) reinforced papers using polyacrylonitrile (PAN) based CF and wood pulp were prepared by varying the lengths and the concentrations of CF, and the basis weight of paper to investigate adhesive state between CF and pulp, and physical properties and electrical conductivity of the paper. The reinforcement was caused by physical entanglement and adhesion at the interface of the different fibers rather than by chemical bonds. The tear strength and the thickness of the paper increased as increasing the concentration of CF, while the tensile and the burst strength of the paper decreased. The improved dispersion of CF in the paper was obtained from mixing shorter CF, but the maximum electrical conductivity of the paper was gained from mixing 10 mm chopped CF. The electrical conductivity of the paper increased sharply from 2 wt% to 8 wt% of CF showing S-curve, and increased linearly as increasing the basis weight of the paper. Therefore, in order to improve the electrical conductivity and the physical property of the paper, the increase of basis weight of the paper is also important as the increase of CF content in the paper.

Microwave Reflective Properties of Carbon Fiber-Epoxy Composites (탄소섬유-에폭시 복합재료의 전파반사 특성)

  • 탄소섬유-에폭시 복합재료의 전파 반사특성을 전파전송 이론에 근거하여 해석하였다. 탄소섬유 복합재료의유전상수를 투과/반사법에 의해 4-12GAz 주파수 범위에서 측정하였다. 측정된 재료정수로부터 반사손실을 시편의두께와 주파수의 함수로 계산하였다. 탄소섬유 복합재료는 높은 유전상수와 도전손실 특성에 의해 전파의 반사율이 매우 높았다. 그러나 파장에 비해 시편의 두께가 작은 경우 반사손실은 두께에 매우 민감하였으며, 이는 입력 임피던스의 변화에 기인하는 것으로 해석되었다. 이러한 결과로부터 전자파 차폐를 극대화시키기 위해서는 특히 저주파 대역에서 시편의두께 조절이 매우 중요함을 제시할 수 있었다.

Long-Term Behavior of CFRP Strips under Sustained Loads (지속하중을 받는 탄소섬유판의 장기 거동)

  • Experimental study was performed to evaluate the long-term behavior of CFRP (carbon fiber reinforced polymer) strips under sustained loads including prestressing force in strengthening RC members with post-tensioned CFRP strips. Two types of CFRP strip such as unidirectional CFRP strip and hybrid CFRP strip which is composed of carbon fiber and steel plate were considered. Also two types of loading scheme were included in this study. Direct sustained loading test had been carried out to estimate the creep deformation and relaxation of CFRP strips including slip deformation at both mechanical anchorages for over 700 days. Also, flexural sustained loading test had been conducted to estimate the initial prestress losses on clamping the CFRP strips at jacking anchorages for over 90 days. From the sustained loading tests, it was observed that stress losses of unidirectional CFRP strips due to the creep deformation and relaxation of material itself and slip deformation at mechanical anchorage were ignorable. On the other hand, significant stress losses caused by the yielding of steel embedded in CFRP strips were found in case of hybrid CFRP strips due to the initial jacking force over steel yielding stress. Also, initial prestress losses during setting of CFRP strips on mechanical anchorage were about 10% of intial jacking force, which must be considered in the design.
