  • Coarray is a parallel processing technique introduced in the Fortran 2008 standard. Coarray can implement parallel processing using simple syntax. In this research, we examined applicability of Coarray to seismic parallel processing by comparing performance of seismic data processing programs using Coarray and MPI. We compared calculation time using seismic wave propagation modeling and one to one communication time using domain decomposition technique. We also compared performance of parallel reverse-time migration programs using Coarray and MPI. Test results show that the computing speed of Coarray method is similar to that of MPI. On the other hand, MPI has superior communication speed to that of Coarray.

  • Least squares ($l^2$ norm) solutions of seismic inversion tend to be very sensitive to data points with large errors. The $l^1$ norm minimization gives more robust solutions, but usually with higher computational cost. Iteratively reweighted least squares (IRLS) method gives efficient approximate solutions of these $l^1$ norm problems. I propose an efficient implementation of the IRLS method for a hybrid $l^1/l^2$ minimization problem that behaves as $l^2$ norm fit for small residual and $l^1$ norm fit for large residuals. The proposed algorithm shows more robust characteristics to the decision of the threshold value than the l1 norm IRLS inversion does with respect to the threshold value to avoid singularity.

  • For the elastic migation, the velocity errors between the initial velocity model and true velocity model seriously affect the migrated images. The assumption of an initial velocity model, thus, is one of the critical factor for the successful migration. In case of applying the layered earth model as an initial velocity model, the layer boundary having large velocity contrast can not be defined well with conventional traveltime calculation algolithms and we have the difficulties for expressing the characteristics of the real subsurface. Smooth Background Model (SBM) we have applied as an initial velocity model in our study is characterized to be linearly varying the velocity with the depth, which can express the velocity variation in the subsurface properly. Thus it can properly be applied to traveltime calculation algolithms such as Vidale's method. In this study, Kirchhoff operator for prestack migration was used and the absolute amplitude obtained by modeling was applied as a weighted value to consider the true amplitude for initial model. Initial velocity model for migration was determined by using stacking velocity and we applied this model to real data.

  • We investigated pre- and post- seismic total electron content (TEC) anomalies in ionosphere caused by recent large-scale earthquakes around the globe and additionally examined whether the similar phenomena are detected in connection with the earthquakes around the Korean Penisula. TEC anomalies associated with the large-scale earthquakes showed the similar results to previous studies. In addition, we newly found the similar TEC changes from the recent 2016 Ecuador earthquake (M7.8). However, the post-seismic TEC changes would be falsely interpreted as the pre-seismic TEC changes dependent on the post-processing of TEC observation. We also investigated the possibility of TEC responses from the recent domestic earthquakes including 2016 Gyeongju earthquake but could not find any anomalous TEC changes. This is probably because the domestic earthquakes release significantly smaller acoustic wave energy than that of large-scale earthquakes occurring in plate boundaries.

  • Subsurface velocity is critical for the accurate resolution geological structures. The estimation of acoustic impedance is also critical, as it provides key information regarding the reservoir properties. Therefore, researchers have developed various inversion approaches for the estimation of reservoir properties. The Markov chain Monte Carlo method, which is a stochastic method, has advantages over the deterministic method, as the stochastic method enables us to attenuate the local minima problem and quantify the uncertainty of inversion results. Therefore, the Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion method has been applied to various kinds of geophysical inversion problems. However, studies on the Markov chain Monte Carlo inversion are still very few compared with deterministic approaches. In this study, we reviewed various types of reversible jump Markov chain Monte Carlo applications and explained the key concept of each application. Furthermore, we discussed future applications of the stochastic method.

  • According to analyses of high-resolution seismic profiles (air gun, sparker, and SBP) and a deep-drill core(YSDP 105) in the mid-eastern Yellow Sea, stratigraphic and geoacoustic models have been established and seismo-acoustic modeling has been fulfilled using ray tracing of finite element method. Stratigraphic model reflects seismo-, litho-, and chrono-stratigraphic sequences formed under a significant influence of Quaternary glacio-eustatic sea-level fluctuations. Each sequence consists of terrestrial to very-shallow-marine coarse-grained lowstand systems tract and tidal fine-grained transgressive to highstand systems tract. Based on mean grain-size data (121 samples) of the drill core, bulk density and P-wave velocity of depositional units have been inferred and extrapolated down to a depth of the recovery using the Hamilton's regression equations. As goo-acoustic parameters, the 121 pairs of bulk density and P-wave velocity have been averaged on each unit of the stratigraphic model. As a result of computer ray-tracing simulation of the subsurface strata, we have found that there are complex ray paths and many acoustic-shadow zones owing to the presence of irregular layer boundaries and low-velocity layers.

  • A core zone of a fill dam is an important part of a dam for cutoff of water. Therefore, the material properties and behavior characteristics of a core zone are very important factors in an analysis of dam stability. However, the investigation on material properties of actual dam core is extremely rare so far. The material properties have been acquired or estimated by indirect methods like a surface wave surveying or empirical equation. In this research, in-situ and laboratory tests were conducted during dismantling an existing dam directly to investigate characteristics of the core zone in terms of the depth and transient variation of properties after construction of the dam. Dynamic material properties like shear wave velocity and shear modulus were measured and compared to other existing empirical correlations. In addition, aging characteristics of dynamic material properties were investigated by a series of laboratory tests.

  • Generally, investigation methods of cut slope are conucted only geological surface survey to gain engineering geological data of cut slopes. These methods have many problems such as limitations of investigation for a special area. So geophysical investigations such as geotomography, seismic and electrical resistivity methods have been used to search for failure surface in potential failure slopes or failed slopes. But investigation method using the borehole camera is recently a used method and it is thought that this method is more reliable method than other investigation methods because of being able to see by the eyes. Therefore, this paper was conducted investigations of borings and BIPS(Borehole Image Processing System) to search for potential sliding surfaces and was applied to obtain information of discontinuity on failed and potential failure slope in highway. As the results of BIPS, we could decide potential sliding surface in the slope, conducted to check slope stability and decided slope stability measures.

  • Rock mass rating (RMR) is the key factor when designing the appropriate support pattern of tunnel projects. Borehole drilling is usually performed along the tunnel route in order to determine the rock mass rating to be used for tunnel design. The rock mass rating at the non-boring region between boreholes is usually assessed through geophysical surveys such as electrical prospecting, seismic prospecting, etc. Many studies were carried out to find out the correlation between electrical resistivity and rock mass rating. However, most researches were aimed at obtaining the relationship between the two parameters utilizing experimental results obtained from laboratory tests or electrical prospectings. In this paper, efforts were made to analyze and obtain relationships between the electrical resistivity obtained from in-situ electrical resistivity logging data and the rock mass rating. Correlation studies using field data showed that the electrical resistivity is highly correlated with the rock mass rating with the determination coefficient more than 90%. The correlation analysis was also carried out between RMR classification parameters and the electrical resistivity. It was shown that the correlation between the condition of discontinuities and the electrical resistivity was very high with the determination coefficient more than 80%; that between the groundwater condition and the electrical resistivity was very low with the determination coefficient less than 57%.

  • Three deconvolution methods were applied to stacked seismic data obtained to investigate gas-hydrates in the Ulleung Basin, East Sea: (1) minimum-phase spiking deconvolution, (2) minimum-phase spiking deconvolution using an averaged wavelet from all traces, and (3) deterministic deconvolution using a wavelet with phases computed from well-logs. We analyzed the resolving property of these methods for lithological boundaries. The first deconvolution method increases temporal resolution but decreases lateral continuity. The second method shows, in an overall sense, similar results to the spiking deconvolution using a minimum phase wavelet for each trace; however, it results in a more consistent and continuous bottom-simulating reflector (BSR) and better resolved sub-BSR reflectors. The results from the third method reveal more detailed internal structures of debris-flow deposits and increased continuity of reflectors; in addition, the seafloor reflection and the BSR appear to have changed to a zero-phase waveform. These properties help more precisely estimate the distribution and reserves of gas hydrates in the exploration area by improving analysis of facies and amplitude of the BSR.
