  • A computer program for three dimensional dynamic analysis of a mount system composed of rigid or flexible bodies and mount elements is developed. Cartesian coordinates and Euler parameters are used to specify the positions and orientations of the bodies. The equations of motion are formulated using Langrange equation and Langrange multiplier technique. The developed program includes routine, for inclined mount elements, several kinds of driving constrains, and external forces. The Static equilibrium analysis routine is also developed using iterative method.

  • Recently, the finite element absolute nodal coordinate formulation (ANCF) was developed for the large deformation analysis of flexible bodies in multi-body dynamics. This formulation is based on the finite element procedures and the general continuum mechanics theory to represent the elastic forces. In this paper, a computation method of dynamic stress in flexible multi-body dynamics using absolute nodal coordinate formulation is proposed. Numerical examples, based on an Euler-Bernoulli beam theory, are shown to verify the efficiency of the proposed method. This method can be applied for predicting the fatigue life of a mechanical system. Moreover, this study demonstrates that structural and multi-body dynamic models can be unified in one numerical system.

  • In this study, a module is developed for modeling and analyzing dynamic behavior of a wind turbine using RecurDyn, which is a commercial multi-body dynamics software developed by FunctionBay, Inc. The wind turbine consists of tower, nacelle, hub and blades. Tower and blades are regarded as flexible bodies for considering elastic effect using beam theory and spring force. In this paper, a constant speed wind was assumed and aerodynamic force is modeled using BEM theory. Dynamic analysis applying this aerodynamic force is carried out. To verify the validity of analysis results, these results are compared to those of GH-Bladed which is a commercial software for analyzing wind turbine system distributed by Garrad Hassan.

  • In this study, we perform the structural analysis of a floating offshore wind turbine tower by considering the dynamic response of the floating platform. A multibody system consisting of three blades, a hub, a nacelle, the platform, and the tower is used to model the floating wind turbine. The blades and the tower are modeled as flexible bodies using three-dimensional beam elements. The aerodynamic force on the blades is calculated by the Blade Element Momentum (BEM) theory with hub rotation. The hydrostatic, hydrodynamic, and mooring forces are considered for the platform. The structural dynamic responses of the tower are simulated by numerically solving the equations of motion. From the simulation results, the time history of the internal forces at the nodes, such as the bending moment and stress, are obtained. In conclusion, the internal forces are compared with those obtained from static analysis to assess the effects of wave loads on the structural stability of the tower.

  • A wind turbine simulation program for the coupled dynamics of aerodynamics, elasticity, multi-body dynamics and controls of turbine is newly developed by combining an aero-elastic code and a multi-body dynamics code. The aero-elastic code, based on the blade momentum theory and generalized dynamic wake theory, is developed by NREL(National Renewable Energy Laboratory, USA). The multi-body dynamics code is commercial one which is capable of accounting for geometric nonlinearity and twist deflection. A turbulent wind load case is simulated for the NREL 5-MW baseline wind turbine model by the developed program and FAST. As a result, the two results agree well enough to verify the reliability of the developed program.

  • In this study, a multiscale method for solving a thermoelasticity problem for interphase in the polymeric nanocomposites is developed. Molecular dynamics simulation and finite element analysis were numerically combined to describe the geometrical boundaries and the local mechanical response of the interfacial region where the polymer networks were highly interacted with the nanoparticle surface. Also, the micrmechanical thermoelasticity equations were applied to the obtained equivalent continuum unit to compute the growth of interphase thickness according to the size of nanoparticles, as well as the thermal phase transition behavior at a wide range of temperatures. Accordingly, the equivalent continuum model obtained from the multiscale analysis provides a meaningful description of the thermoelastic behavior of interphase as well as its nanoparticle size effect on thermoelasticity at both below and above the glass transition temperature.

  • A nonlinear aeroelastic analysis system in transonic and supersonic flows has been developed using high speed parallel processing technique on the network based PC-clustered machines. This paper includes the coupling of advanced numerical techniques such as computational structural dynamics (CSD), finite element method (FEM) and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The unsteady Euler solver on dynamic unstructured meshes is employed and coupled with computational aeroelastic solvers. Thus it can give very accurate engineering data in the structural and aeroelastic design of flight vehicles. To show the great potential of useful application, transonic and supersonic flutter analyses have been conducted for a complete aircraft model under developing in Korea.
