액정은 분자배열에 따라 smectics, cholesterics, Nematics의 세종류로 나뉘어지며 Smectics는 다시 Smectic A, Smectic C등으로 분류되며 관심대상은 Smectic A이다.

  • This paper presents a computation of nonlinear elastic strains that may occur in the leaflet of the Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valve by the applied high blood pressure using the finite element analysis methodology. By adopting numerical analysis techniques of the commercial finite element analysis code, NISA, structural analyses of the Edwards MIRA mechanical heart valve are performed for the slight variation of leaflet thickness to get the elastic strains occurring in the leaflet while the high blood fluid pressures are applied to the leaflet surface in order that the maximum stress occurring in the leaflet may be less than the yield stress of the leaflet material(Si-Alloyed PyC). And so, only the geometric non-linearity is assumed because large geometric nonlinear elastic strains are expected rather than material nonlinear strains due to the applied high blood pressure. Computed linear and nonlinear elastic strains are compared to make sure the non-linearity of the computed elastic strain. The comparison result shows that large elastic strains occur clearly in the very thin leaflets as high blood pressures are applied. However, only the linear elastic strains occur for low blood pressures, and also for thick leaflets even for the high blood pressures. Hence the nonlinear structural analysis is very required in the structural design of a mechanical heart valve.

  • The two eigenvalues (elastic critical load and natural frequency of lateral vibration) of sinusoidally tapered bats with simply supported ends were determined by the finite element method. For the convenience of structural engineers who are engaged in the structural design or vibration analysis of tapered beam-columns, eigenvalue coefficients were expressed by simple algebraic equations. The validity of each algebraic equation was confirmed by the value of unity for each correlation coefficient. The influence of axial thrust on the lateral vibration frequency was also investigated. For this purpose, the axial thrust was increased successively and the corresponding frequency was calculated. The approximate linear relationship between the axial thrust and the square of the frequency was confirmed lot each of the tapered members.

  • This paper presents an analytic method and a design technique for golf shoes with air-cycled pump in the midsole. The golf shoes are modeled using the finite element method for better design by considering the configuration of the midsole and the outsole, which compose the golf shoes. Also the optimum size and shape of air-cycled pump in the midsole is examined. The values or standard human pressure for boundary conditions are adopted for the FEA(Finite Element Analysis). The unknown constants of the strain energy function of Ogden type are observed in accordance with the axial tension test. By the commercial FEM software for nonlinear analysis, MARC V7.3, the strains and the values of volume change for the midsole and the outsole are obtained, respectively. It can be concluded that results obtained by FEM in the midsole and the outsole are different depending on the characteristic of elastomer The results reported herein provide better understanding of analyzing the golf shoes. Moreover, it is believed that those properties of the results can be utilized in the shoes industry to develop the effective design method.

  • A method analizing contact pressure between plate and elastic half space is presented by using F.E.M. With the method, the pressure intensities at surface nodes of half space cae be directly calculated by using flexibility matrix of half space. The method is originally presented by Y.K. Cheung et al.(3) Insted of Y.K. Cheung's method, which use a conception of equi-contact pressure area around each surface nodes of half space in the noded rectanqular element area. We use the equi-contact pressure area around the Gaussian integration points of half space surface in the noded isoparametric element area. Numarical examples are presented and compared with other's studies.

  • Mixed mode surface crack in finite-width plate subjected to uniform tension and bending has been analyzed in 3-D problem by using boundary element method. The calculations were carried out for the surface crack angles(.a/pha.) of 0.deg., 15.deg., 30.deg., 45.deg., 60.deg., and 75.deg., and for the aspect ratio(a/c) of 0.2, 0.4, 0.6 and 1.0 to get stress intensity factors at the boundary points of the surface crack. For the aspect ratio of 1.0 and the surface crack angles, finite element method was used to check the results in this study. Comparison of the results from both methods showed good agreement.

  • Isotropic linear viscoelasticity problems are analyzed numerically in time domain by Boundary Element Method with quadratic isoparametric boundary elements. Viscoelastic fundamental solutions are newly derived by using the elastic-viscoelastic correspondence principle and corresponding boundary integral equations are also presented. Numerical results of two examples are compared with the derived exact solutions to verify the accuracy and validity of the method. A detailed study on the accuracy of displacement and stress in terms of time integration step is given.

  • The mixed convolved action principle provides a new rigorous weak variational formalism for a broad range of initial boundary value problems in mathematical physics and mechanics in terms of mixed formulation, convolution, and fractional calculus. In this paper, its potential in the development of numerical methods for transient problems in various dynamical systems when adopting temporally second order approximation is investigated. For this, the classical single-degree-of-freedom linear elastic dynamical systems are primarily considered to investigate computational characteristics of the developed algorithms. For the undamped system, all the developed algorithms are symplectic with respect to the time step. For the damped system, they are shown to be accurate with good convergence characteristics.

  • Uncoupled, quasi-static and linear thermoviscoelastic problems are analyzed in time domain by the finite element approximation which is developed using the principle of virtual work and viscoelasticity matrices instead of shear and bulk relaxation functions as in usual formulations. The material is assumed to be isotropic, homegeneous and thermorheologically simple, which means that the temperature-time equivalence postulate is effective. The stress-strain laws are expressed by relaxation-type hereditary integrals. In spatial and time discritizations, isoparametric quadratic quadrilateral finite elements and linear time variations are adopted. For explicit derivations, the viscoelastic material is assumed to behave standard linear solid in shear and elastically in dilatation. Two-dimensional examples are solved under general temperature distributions T = T(x, t), and compared with other opproximate solutions to show the versatility of the presented analysis.
