The most important things for the production of recycled aggregates are saving energy, suppressing the generation of by-product fine particles and sustaining the performance of concrete. As solutions, this study proposes this technology of improving the performance of recycled aggregates through forced carbonation.1) It is to stimulate and carbonate the bond paste part that causes the deterioration of recycled aggregates. Particularly, the purpose of this technology is to fill and chemically stabilize pores inside the bond paste, further improving the quality of recycled aggregates with a decreased absorption rate and an enhanced aggregate strength. Ultimately, it is possible to obtain a carbonation model, depending on the paste ratio and particle-size distribution of recycled aggregates. Moreover, by calculating the optimum carbonation period through the verification of this carbonation model, it is possible to examine how much the strength is improved by the reformation of recycled aggregated.

In this study, the applicability of replacing DG(Desulfurized Gypsum) from oil refinery with CCCMs(Carbon dioxide Conversion Capture Materials) as an ALC(Auto-claved LIghtweight Concrete) raw material was examined, and basic properties of ALC was measured. The main chemical components of DG and CCCMs were CaO and SO3, and an increase in LOI(Loss of ignition) due to mineral carbonation reaction was verified. The crystalline phases of CCCMs were CaCO3, CaSO4, Ca(OH)2, and CaSO4·2H2O. When DG, a raw material for ALC production, was replaced with CCCMs, foaming height, pore shape, absolute dry gravity, and compressive strength results measured similar for all binders. In addition, the formation of tobermorite which is main crystalline phase of ALC was shown for all specimens in microstructural analysis.

In this study, the variations in CO2 uptake according to the type and amount of alkali-based activator (Ca(OH)2, CSA) of geopolymer paste were evaluated. As the amount of activator added to the geopolymer paste increased, the fluidity of the paste is decreased and the compressive strength increased. According to the type of activator, it was confirmed that the addition of Ca(OH)2 had a greater effect on improving the compressive strength than CSA. As a result of changes in chemical properties according to carbonation curing, the amount of C-S-H and C-A-S-H gels produced before carbonation increased as the amount of activator increased, and amount of CaCO3 produced after carbonation increased. The reactivity of the blast furnace slag and zeolite increased due to the addition of the activator, and the reactivity tended to increase as the amount of addition increased. As a result of CO2 uptake, 10.3 wt% when Ca(OH)2 10 % was added and 8.77 wt% when CSA 10 % was added was confirmed. It increased by 421 % and 388 % respectively, compared to the case where no activator was added.
Molten carbonate oxidation (MCO) is one of the promising alternative technologies for the treatment of the chlorinated organic compounds because it is capable of trapping chlorine during a destruction of them. In this study, destructions of chlorinated organic compounds ($C_6H_5Cl$, $C_2HCl_3$ and $CCl_4$) and an insulated oil containing PCBs were performed by using the two stage molten carbonate oxidation system. MCO reactor temperature largely affected the destruction of the chlorinated organic compounds. Destruction of the chlorinated organics very efficient in the primary MCO reactor however a significant amount of CO was emitted from the MCO system. This CO emission was gradually decreased by an increase in the primary reactor temperature and oxidizing air feed rate. The HCl emission from the MCO system was below 7 ppm regardless of tested conditions. The chlorine collection efficiencies were in the range of 99.95-99.99%. The destruction of PCBs in the insulated oil was efficient at a temperature above $900^{\circ}C$ and overall destruction efficiency of them was determined as over 99.9999%.
Mineral carbonation is a technology in which carbonates are synthesized from minerals including serpentine and olivine, and industrial wastes such as slag and cement, of which all contain calcium or magnesium when reacted with carbon dioxide. This study aims to develop the mineral carbonation technology for commercialization, which can reduce environmental burden and process cost through the reduction of carbon dioxide using steel slag and the slag reuse after calcium extraction. Calcium extraction was conducted using NH4Cl solution for air-cooled slag and convert slag, and ${\geq}98%$ purity calcium carbonate was synthesized by reaction with calcium-extracted solution and carbon dioxide. And we conducted experimentally to minimize the quantity of by-product, the slag residue after calcium extraction, which has occupied large amount of weight ratio (about 80-90%) at the point of mineral carbonation process using slag. The slag residue was used to replace silica sand in the manufacture of cement panel, and physical properties including compressive strength and flexible strength of panel using the slag residue and normal cement panel, respectively, were analyzed. The calcium concentration in extraction solution was analyzed by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM) was also used to identify the surface morphology of calcium carbonate, and XRD was used to analyze the crystallinity and the quantitative analysis of calcium carbonate. In addition, the cement panel evaluation was carried out according to KS L ISO 679, and the compressive strength and flexural strength of the panels were measured.

Concrete emits a large amount of carbon dioxide throughout its life cycle, and due to the societal demand for carbon dioxide reduction, research on storing carbon dioxide in concrete in the form of minerals is ongoing. In this study, cyanobacteria, which absorb carbon dioxide through photosynthesis and fix it as calcium carbonate, were applied to a porous concrete substrate, and the changes in the properties of the concrete substrate due to their special environmental curing condition were analyzed. The results showed that the calcium carbonate precipitation by the microorganisms was concentrated in the light-exposed surface area, and most of the precipitation occurred in the cement paste part, not in the aggregate. This microbially induced calcium carbonate precipitation enhanced the mechanical performance of the paste and improved the overall compressive strength as the curing age progressed. In addition, the increase in microbial biofilm and calcium carbonate improved the pore structure, which influenced the reduction in water permeability.

The technology developed for the decrease of applying loads and self-weight of a structure is to improve conventional Foam Cement Banking Method (FCB) by applying mixed slurry of bottom ash, cement and foams. Since the foam-mixed concrete, which is a major material of the Bottom ash-mixed Light weight concrete Banking method (BLB) developed, contains mineral admixture such as cement, the behavior shows time-dependent deformation and deterioration of durability due to environmental exposure. Thus, this study is subject to figure out the characteristics of long-termed behavior and durability of the developed method by carrying out experiments for schemed parameters, which are considered to be factors affecting mainly on concrete's characteristics from mechanical analysis. As results of tests, it was found that the developed concrete offers higher resistance than conventional foamed concrete in terms of long-termed behaviors associated with drying shrinkage and creep, and durability problems of freeze-thaw and carbonation processes, especially with addition of bottom ash.

In the realm of cement manufacturing, concerted efforts are underway to mitigate the emission of greenhouse gases. A significant portion, approximately 60%, of these emissions during the cement clinker sintering process is attributed to the decarbonation of limestone, which serves as a fundamental ingredient in cement production. Prompted by these environmental concerns, there is an active pursuit of alternative technologies and admixtures for cement that can substitute for limestone. Concurrently, initiatives are being explored to harness technology within the cement industry for the capture of carbon dioxide from industrial emissions, facilitating its conversion into carbonate minerals via chemical processes. Parallel to these technological advances, economic growth has precipitated a surge in construction activities, culminating in a steady escalation of construction waste, notably waste concrete. This study is anchored in the innovative production of calcium silicate cement clinkers, utilizing finely powdered waste concrete, followed by a thorough analysis of their mineral phases. Through X-ray diffraction(XRD) analysis, it was observed that increasing the substitution level of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2 to (CaO+SiO2) leads to a decrease in Belite and γ-Belite, whereas minerals associated with carbonation, such as wollastonite and rankinite, exhibited an upsurge. Furthermore, the formation of gehlenite in cement clinkers, especially at higher substitution levels of waste concrete powder and the aforementioned molar ratio, is attributed to a synthetic reaction with Al2O3 present in the waste concrete powder. Analysis of free-CaO content revealed a decrement with increasing substitution rate of waste concrete powder and the molar ratio of SiO2/(CaO+SiO2). The outcomes of this study substantiate the viability of fabricating calcium silicate cement clinkers employing waste concrete powder.
This study analyzed the amount of carbon dioxide reduction and economic benefits of detailed processes of CO2 6,000 tons plant facilities with mineral carbonation technology using carbon dioxide and coal materials emitted from domestic circulating fluidized bed combustion power plants. Coal ash reacted with carbon dioxide through carbon mineralization facilities is produced as a complex carbonate and used as a construction material, accompanied by a greenhouse gas reduction. In addition, it is possible to generate profits from the sales of complex carbonates and carbon credits produced in the process. The actual carbon dioxide reduction per ton of complex carbonate production was calculated as 45.8 kgCO2eq, and the annual carbon dioxide reduction was calculated as 805.3 tonCO2, and the benefit-cost ratio (B/C Ratio) is 1.04, the internal rate return (IRR) is 10.65 % and the net present value (NPV) is KRW 24,713,465 won, which is considered economical. Carbon mineralization technology is one of the best solutions to reduce carbon dioxide considering future carbon dioxide reduction and economic potential.
