This paper discusses an effective processing of similarity search that supports time warping in large sequence database. Time warping enables finding sequences with similar patterns even when they are of different length, Previous methods fail to employ multi-dimensional indexes without false dismissal since the time warping distance does not satisfy the triangular inequality. They have to scan all the database, thus suffer from serious performance degradation in large database. Another method that hires the suffix tree also shows poor performance due to the large tree size. In this paper we propose a new novel method for similarity search that supports time warping Our primary goal is to innovate on search performance in large database without false dismissal. to attain this goal ,we devise a new distance function $D_{tw-Ib}$ consistently underestimates the time warping distance and also satisfies the triangular inequality, $D_{tw-Ib}$ uses a 4-tuple feature vector extracted from each sequence and is invariant to time warping, For efficient processing, we employ a distance function, We prove that our method does not incur false dismissal. To verify the superiority of our method, we perform extensive experiments . The results reveal that our method achieves significant speedup up to 43 times with real-world S&P 500 stock data and up to 720 times with very large synthetic data.

This paper proposes an indexing technique for fast retrieval of similar image subsequences using the multi-dimensional time warping distance. The time warping distance is a more suitable similarity measure than Lp distance in many applications where sequences may be of different lengths and/or different sampling rates. Our indexing scheme employs a disk-based suffix tree as an index structure and uses a lower-bound distance function to filter out dissimilar subsequences without false dismissals. It applies the normaliration for an easier control of relative weighting of feature dimensions and the discretization to compress the index tree. Experiments on medical and synthetic image sequences verify that the proposed method significantly outperforms the naive method and scales well in a large volume of image sequence databases.

Recently, traffic congestion in the city is continuously increasing due to the expansion of the living area centered in the metropolitan area and the concentration of population in large cities. New road construction has become impossible due to the increase in land prices in downtown areas and limited sites, and the importance of efficient data-based road operation is increasingly emerging. For efficient road operation, it is essential to classify appropriate scenarios according to changes in traffic conditions and to operate optimal signals for each scenario. In this study, the Dynamic Time Warping model for cluster analysis of time series data was applied to traffic volume and speed data collected at continuous intersections for optimal scenario classification. We propose a methodology for composing an optimal signal operation scenario by analyzing the characteristics of the scenarios for each data used for classification.
This paper presents a novel on-line trajectory optimization framework based on automatic time warping, which performs the time warping of a reference motion while optimizing character motion control. Unlike existing physics-based character animation methods where sampling times for a reference motion are uniform or fixed during optimization in general, our method considers the change of sampling times on top of the dynamics of character motion in the same optimization, which allows the character to effectively respond to external pushes with optimal time warping. In order to do so, we formulate an optimal control problem which takes into account both the full-body dynamics and the change of sampling time for a reference motion, and present a model predictive control framework that produces an optimal control policy for character motion and sampling time by repeatedly solving the problem for a fixed-span time window while shifting it along the time axis. Our experimental results show the robustness of our framework to external perturbations and the effectiveness on rhythmic motion synthesis in accordance with a given piece of background music.
In this paper, we propose a range subsequence matching under dynamic time warping (DTW) distance. We exploit Dual Match, which divides data sequences into disjoint windows and the query sequence into sliding windows. However, Dual Match is known to work under Euclidean distance. We argue that Euclidean distance is a fragile distance, and thus, DTW should be supported by Dual Match. For this purpose, we derive a new important theorem showing the correctness of our approach and provide a detailed algorithm using the theorem. Extensive experimental results show that our range subsequence matching performs much better than the sequential scan algorithm.

This paper discusses an index-based subsequence matching that supports time warping in large sequence databases. Time warping enables finding sequences with similar patterns even when they are of different lengths. In earlier work, we suggested an efficient method for whole matching under time warping. This method constructs a multidimensional index on a set of feature vectors, which are invariant to time warping, from data sequences. For filtering at feature space, it also applies a lower-bound function, which consistently underestimates the time warping distance as well as satisfies the triangular inequality. In this paper, we incorporate the prefix-querying approach based on sliding windows into the earlier approach. For indexing, we extract a feature vector from every subsequence inside a sliding window and construct a multi-dimensional index using a feature vector as indexing attributes. For query precessing, we perform a series of index searches using the feature vectors of qualifying query prefixes. Our approach provides effective and scalable subsequence matching even with a large volume of a database. We also prove that our approach does not incur false dismissal. To verily the superiority of our method, we perform extensive experiments. The results reseal that our method achieves significant speedup with real-world S&P 500 stock data and with very large synthetic data.

A sequence refers to data in which the order exists on the two items, and purchase transaction data in which the products purchased by one customer are listed is one of the representative sequence data. In general, all goods have a product taxonomy, such as category/ sub-category/ sub-sub category, and if they are similar to each other, they are classified into the same category according to their characteristics. Therefore, in this paper, we not only consider the purchase order of products to compare two purchase transaction sequences, but also calculate their similarity by giving a higher score if they are in the same category in spite of their difference. Especially, in order to choose the best similarity measure that directly affects the calculation performance of the purchase transaction sequences, we have compared the performance of three representative similarity measures, the Levenshtein distance, dynamic time warping distance, and the Needleman-Wunsch similarity. We have extended the existing methods to take into account the product taxonomy. For conventional similarity measures, the comparison of goods in two sequences is calculated by simply assigning a value of 0 or 1 according to whether or not the product is matched. However, the proposed method is subdivided to have a value between 0 and 1 using the product taxonomy tree to give a different degree of relevance between the two products, even if they are different products. Through experiments, we have confirmed that the proposed method was measured the similarity more accurately than the previous method. Furthermore, we have confirmed that dynamic time warping distance was the most suitable measure because it considered the degree of association of the product in the sequence and showed good performance for two sequences with different lengths.

The shape-based retrieval is defined as the operation that searches for the (sub) sequences whose shapes are similar to that of a query sequence regardless of their actual element values. In this paper, we propose a similarity model suitable for shape-based retrieval and present an indexing method for supporting the similarity model. The proposed similarity model enables to retrieve similar shapes accurately by providing the combination of various shape-preserving transformations such as normalization, moving average, and time warping. Our indexing method stores every distinct subsequence concisely into the disk-based suffix tree for efficient and adaptive query processing. We allow the user to dynamically choose a similarity model suitable for a given application. More specifically, we allow the user to determine the parameter p of the distance function $L_p$ when submitting a query. The result of extensive experiments revealed that our approach not only successfully finds the subsequences whose shapes are similar to a query shape but also significantly outperforms the sequence search.
