Objectives: The purpose of the study is to investigate the relationship between saliva factors and oral hygiene factors in adults. Methods: The subjects were 112 adults from April 1 to June 15, 2014. The selected salivary factors included stimulated/unstimulated salivary flow rates, salivary buffering capacity and pH, and the selected oral hygiene factors included halitosis, wet weight of tongue plaque and oral humidity in dorsum and inferior surface of tongue. Results: There were significant differences in stimulated/unstimulated salivary flow rates, oral malodor and wet weight of tongue plaque. There were significant differences according to age in stimulated/unstimulated salivary flow rates, salivary buffering capacity and wet weight of tongue plaque. Age had a negative correlation with salivary buffering capacity and had a positive correlation with wet weight of tongue plaque. Unstimulated salivary flow rate had a positive correlation with stimulated salivary flow rate, and stimulated salivary flow rate was positively correlated with oral humidity of inferior surface of tongue, salivary buffering capacity and halitosis. Oral humidity of inferior surface of tongue had a positive correlation with salivary buffering rate, pH and halitosis. Salivary buffering capacity was positively correlated with pH, and pH was negatively correlated with halitosis. Conclusions: The salivary factors were linked to the oral hygiene. As there may be great changes in salivary flow rate and oral hygiene due to various factors, the salivary factors seem to be one of the major factors to ensure oral hygiene and to promote oral health.

The purpose of study was to assess the influence of acidic drinks on the erosion of tooth enamel and the effect of fluoridated saliva on the remineralization. Twenty five drinks were sampled. The erosive potential and remineralizing effect were measured by the tooth surface microhardness test. The pH of most drinks were below pH 5.5. Reduction rates of enamel surface hardness by the flavored carbonated drink were 16.90%, 25.11%, 35.10%, and 41.62% after 5, 10, 30, and 60 minutes of demineralization, and recovery rates by remineralizaing solution were 61.52%, 67.96%, 72.13% and 75.93% after 1, 24, 48, and 72 hours of remineralization, respectively. The results suggest that the most drinks in the markets have the potential to erode the teeth and that erosion occurs fast but remineralization proceeds slowly.

Syrup form medicines which children commonly take contains sugar as sweeteners. Sugar, low endogenous pH, high acidity, mucosity and low concentrations of ions including those of calcium, fluoride, and phosphate in their composition, they can be cause of caries and erosion. Not only the properties found in such medicines, but also other factors such as high frequency of ingestion, bedtime consumption, and the collateral effect of a reduction in salivary flow, poor oral hygiene of sick children may also contribute to the risk. The other side, parents rarely recognize these risk, and medical experts also easily overlook. The purpose of this study was to investigate the pH level of some syrup form medicines which are frequently administered by infants and young children, and their effects on the changes of plaque pH when rinsing with them. And we compared the salivary pH change induced by rinsing with Cough-syrup only and rinsing with Cough-syrup followed by water. The results were as follows : 1. The average pH of syrup form medicines which were prescribed in Pusan National University Hospital and several OTC syrup form medicines was pH $4.7{\pm}0.94$, within the range of pH 3.0 to 6.8. 2. The plaque pH decreased rapidly below pH 5.5 after rinsing with the syrup form medicines which were selected for the test and there was no statistically significant difference in the of plaque pH change between syrup form medicines except COLDI(p>0.05). 3. There was statistically significant difference in salivary pH change between rinsing with Coughsyrup only and rinsing with water after Cough-syrup(p<0.05).

Purpose: This study was aimed to compare the effect between wet gauze with cold normal saline and wet gauze with cold water on thirst, oral cavity condition, and saliva pH among postoperative patients. Methods: This study was a quasi-experimental study with 56 participants. The experimental group received wet gauze with cold normal saline, and control group received wet gauze with cold water for three times at 15 minute intervals. Data were collected using visual analog scale for thirst, oral assessment guide for oral cavity condition and acidity tape for saliva pH. Measurement were made before applying the gauze and at 15min, 30min, and 45min after applying gauze. Data were analyzed using repeated measured ANOVA. Results: Thirst, oral cavity condition, and saliva pH improved in both groups with increasing number of gauze application. Thirst for the experimental group improved more than for the control group (F=4.29, p=.009), oral cavity condition except saliva, and saliva pH were not significantly different between the groups. Conclusion: This study results indicated that nurses can apply wet gauze with cold normal saline to reduce thirst and saliva acidity, and to improve the oral cavity condition for postoperative patients.
To examine whether HSV, VZV, H. pylori and Candida that are known to be microorganisms causing ulcerative disease in oral cavity and have the relatively high contigiousness are detected in saliva of patients with RAU and related to the development with RAU, PCR and culture were performed on the saliva of 29 patients with RAU and 29 control subjects who visited the Department of Oral Medicine, Dental Hospital, Chosun University. The results were obtained as follows; 1. HSV DNA was detected in 41.4% patients with RAU, and 55.2% control subjects, however, a significant difference between the two groups was not detected, (P>0.05), and VZV DNA was not detected in both groups. 2. H. pylori DNA was detected in 27.6% patients with RAU, and 48.3% control subjects, however, a significant difference between the two groups was not detected (P>0.05). 3. Candida was cultured in 13.8% patients with RAU, and 6.9% control subjects, however, a significant difference between the two groups was not detected (P>0.05). This results suggest that HSV, VZV, H. pylori and Candida can not be regarded to play a direct role in the development of RAU. Thus it is considered that in future, on a larger sample, also, it has to be examined whether other microorganisms acts as a trigger factor of the development of RAU.

An in vitro study on cariogenic potential of 8 over-the-counter syrups for children was performed. The experimental groups were 8 over-the-counter syrups. The positive control group was 10% sucrose solution, and the negative control group was artificial saliva. The pH of each group was determined. The buffering capacity was measured by the volume of 2 N NaOH adding to equalize the pH of 20 ml of experimental solution to pH 7. The consistency was measured by the time to pass Ostwald pipette for 2 ml of the experimental solution. The experimental solutions were inoculated with S. mutans and cultured in $37^{\circ}C$ anaerobic condition for 48 hours. To estimate acid production, pH of the experimental solutions were measured before and after the culture. The primary teeth specimens were soaked in the experimental solutions for 20 minutes three times a day. Except on those hours the specimens were stored in artificial saliva. After 5 days, the microhardness changes of the specimens were measured. These results show that most of syrup-form medicines for children tend to have cariogenic potential partially in endogenous pH, buffering capacity, consistency, acid production and erosive ability of enamel. For the oral health of children, the alternative sweeteners (ex. xylitol) may be substituted for the cariogenic sweeteners of syrups. Additionally, It may be helpful that the chewable tablet replace liquid or syrup in term of dose form.
Glucosyltransferase of Streptococcus mutans NCTC 10449 was purified and characterized. It relates with production of insoluble glucan in dental caries. The molecular weight was estimated to be 152.000. The optimum pH and temperature was 6.5 and $35^{\circ}C$. respectively. The enzyme was stable in alkaline pH. The Michaelis constants of the enzyme for releasing of fructose were 48 mM. Hydrolysis rate of insolut~le glucan by tlextranase was higher in S. mutuns NCTC 10449 than that of strains isolated from saliva.
Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of gargling with S-solution and gargling with A-solution on salivary pH, coated tongue, and dental plaque index in preschool children. Methods: Non-equivalent control group pretest-posttest design was used to select the participants. 99 preschool children were divided into three groups. Dependent variables were recorded at baseline, 30 minutes, and 7 days after the first treatment was given. The data were analyzed using $X^2$-test, ANOVA, and repeated measures of ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences in dependent variables in pre-test. However, the salivary pH in the S-solution group had significantly increased after 30 minutes (p<.05) and then again 7 days (p<.01) after the first treatment. Also, the S-solution and A-solution groups had greater decrease in dental plaque index after 30 minutes and again 7 days after the first treatment (p<.001) than the control group. With respect to coated tongue, there were no significant differences among the three groups. Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that essential oil gargling after brushing is helpful in improving oral health due to auxiliary oral hygiene effects with natural products. Specifically, gargling with S-solution is more effective than A-solution on oral health in preschool children by neutralizing salivary pH and reducing dental plaque index.
Purpose : To elucidate the effects of pentoxifylline and diltiazem on the late response of the salivary glands of the rat after irradiation. Materials and Methods : Sixteen Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups : (a) irradiation alone (b) irradiation with pentixifylline (PTX) (c) irradiation with diltiazem (DTZ) (d) irradiation with both PTX and DTZ. Irradiation was given in a single fraction of 16 Gy using 4 MV photon energy through an anterior port encompassing the left side of the salivary gland leaving the right side of salivary gland as a control. PTX, 20 mg/kg and/or DTZ, 50 mg/kg were infused intraperitoneally before irradiation, Two rats from each group were sacrificed on the 10th week and the rest was sacrificed on the 16th week after irradiation. Histopathologic examinations were undertaken for each section and the proportion of vacuolated cells out of the total number of cells under light microscopic fields was calculated. The statistical significance in the difference of the proportion of the vacuolated cells among the experimental groups was evaluated by a $x^2$-test. Results : Irradiated salivary glands of the 10th week group revealed markedly increased number of vacuolated cells compared to those of unirradiated control. The proportion of vacuolated cells was significantly reduced in both the PTX group (p value=0.001) and the combined PTX and DTX group compared to those of irradiation alone group. The DTZ alone group did not reveal the significant reduction of vacuolated cells compared to those of irradiation alone group (p value, >0.05). The 16th week groups revealed similar findings to those of the 10th week group, but the degree of chronic inflammatory cell infiltrates and interstitial fibrosis was increased and the number of acinar cells was reduced compared to those of the 10th week group. Conclusions : PTX significantly reduced the late radiation response of salivary glands, but DTZ did not reduce the same degree as PTX did. Taking the positive results of this study into consideration, it seems reasonable to apply PTX into the clinical trial for the head and neck irradiation to reduce the late radiation sequelae of salivary glands in the near future. At the same time the further experiment to clarify the subcellar mechni는 involved in PTX should be preceded.
Even though the increasing interest in fermented milk, the information on the influence of fermented milk on oral health in literature is sparce. We have investigated the effect of fermented milk on saliva. Thirty-three healthy unmedicated subjects at the age of their twenties were included in this study and divided into control, fermented milk, and milk groups. And, the experiment period was 70 days. The authors examined the number of salivary S.mutans, Lactobacilli, pH, and viscosity at the beginning of the experiment. And, we investigated the changes of the these factors at 10,40, and 70 days after. The authors came to the following conclusions The obtined results were as follows : 1. There were no significant changes in the numbers of saliary S. mutans in the control, fermented milk, andmilk groups through the experimental period. 2. There was no significant change in the number of salivary lactobacilli in the fermented milk group throiugh the experimental period. 3. There was a decrease in salivary pH after 40 and 70 days in fermented milk group. 4. There were no significant changes in the values of salivary viscosity at a low shear rate in all groups, but there were increases in these values at a high shear rate in the fermented milk and milk groups through the experimental period.
