  • A weather radar extracts the weather information from the return echoes which consist of scattered electromagnetic wave signals from rain, cloud and dust particles, etc. The acquisition of accurate weather information depends on the operation environment which include the Doppler weather signal and ground clutter characteristics. Since the conventional symmetric weather Doppler model does not represent the measurements in real situations, the improved model is suggested to describe the skewness in the Doppler spectrum model. Using the suggested model, many various weather signals can be simulated to verify the accuracy of signal processing algorithms and the reliability of the extracted weather information

  • Abruptly occurred obstacles on highway threaten driving safety. Radar draws the attention to the collision avoidance system because it can be fully operational in all weather, and day and night condition. This paper presents the design, implementation and performance test results of pulsed Doppler radar system for detection and warning of road obstacles. The system is designed to consider highway environment and detection capability about various fixed and moving obstacles. The system consists of 4 subsystems, which include antenna unit, transmitter and receiver unit, radar signal & data processing unit, and controller & display unit. The core technologies include clutter map based change detection for fixed obstacles detection, Doppler estimation for velocity detection of moving targets, and azimuth angle estimation method using monopulse for lane estimation and tracking. The design performance of the developed radar system is verified through experiments using a fixed reference target and moving vehicles in test highway.

  • Since the AESA radar scans and tracks a distant targets or ground, it requires a test field which meets far-field condition before flight test. In order to test beam foaming, targeting, and availability from cluttering and jamming, it is general to build a outdoor roof-lab test site at tens of meters high. However, the site is affected by surrounding terrain, weather, and noise wave and is also requires time, space, and a lot of costs. In order to solve this problem, theoretical near-field beam foaming method has proposed. However, it requires modification of associated hardware in order to construct near-field test configuration. In this paper, we propose near-field beam foaming method which use single LUT in order to calibrate the variation of TRM(transmit-receive module) which consists AESA radar without modification of associated hardware and software. It requires less costs than far-field test and multiple LUT based near-field test, nevertheless it can derives similar experimental results.

  • On today, optical system are the next generation weapon systems being studied in many countries, starting from USA. One of the most important technologies in optical system is a high-speed automatic target tracking system that can continuously track high-speed moving small targets. This paper designs an automatic target tracking system based on a correlated trekker that is robust against rapid shape changes for fast moving targets and small targets at a distance. The proposed system showed about 98% success rate in response to the targets that are under a complex background such as drone, ranger, etc.

  • A 3-D multi-function radar(MFR) is a modern radar to provide various target information, such as range, doppler, and angle by performing surveillance, multiple target tracking, and missile guidance. In this paper, we introduced a real-time radar signal processor(RSP), which is a crucial component of MFR with its design, implementation using high-speed multiple DSP, and performance. Additionally, we verified that several advanced signal processing algorithms were well-performed in our RSP, such as MCA-CFAR algorithm for target detection in clutter environment, range and velocity measurement algorithm using discriminator estimation, and noise jammer detection algorithm using local minimum selection.

  • This paper presents a ground-to-air bistatic radar system and its implementation algorithm, which resembles an SAR(synthetic aperture radar) reconstruction algorithm. Via cooperative working between a standoff transmitting radar and an array of ground based receiving radars, it detects and images moving targets under clutter in the air. In the proposed system, the whole receiving antenna aperture is synthesized by physical ground based radars, and thus, unlike conventional SAR, it does not require long illumination time of the target area. The reconstruction algorithm uses planewave approximation based polar format processing, which alleviates the requirement of positioning the receiving radars, which can cause grating lobes if not chosen properly. We derive a reconstruction algorithm including clutter suppression and discuss implementation issues, such as the resolution of a reconstructed image and the method of compensation for the irregularity of the receiving radars' positions. A simulation that validates the proposed algorithm is also shown.

  • A specific radar system can be implemented more easily using the frequency modulated continuous wave comparing with the pulse Doppler radar. It also has the advantage of LPI (low probability of interception) because of the low power and wide bandwidth characteristics. These radars are usually used to cover the short range area and to obtain the high resolution measurements of the target range and velocity information. The transmitted waveform is used in the mixer to demodulate the received echo signal and the resulting beat signal can be obtained. This beat signal is analyzed using the FFT method for the purpose of clutter removal, detection of a target, extraction of velocity and range information, etc. However, for the case of short signal acquisition time, this FFT method can cause the serious leakage effect which disables the detection of weaker echo signals masked by strong side lobes of the clutter. Therefore, in this paper, the weighting window method is analyzed to suppress the strong side lobes while maintaining the proper main lobe width. Also, the results of FFT beat spectrum analysis are shown under various environments.

  • Detection of an underwater target by acoustic wave raises various difficulties due to unpredictable noise interference which originates from clutter, reverberation, and variations of medium characteristics with time and location. The SNR and the range resolution of conventional SONAR systems using a matched filter are generally poor, since the latter is optimum only in the additive white noise case. Furthermore, it cannot compensate for variations of the detection level which are responsible for the resultant detection errors. In this paper, the unpredictable interferences are compensated for by using an adaptive filter. It recursively estimates the channel impulse response based on the received echo signal. In the low noise environments, the estimated impulse response is close to the true one, providing a good range resolution, and a matched filter is used subsequently for the purpose of detection. It is shown through computer simulation that good performance can be achieved via the two steps of filtering. Also, the detection level remains unchanged without any additional provisions. Finally, we present the characteristics of the employed adaptive filter parameters.

  • We analyze the performance of various techniques to overcome degradation of performance of STAP caused by nonhomogeneous clutter. The performance of NHD that used to eliminate outliers from nonhomogeneous clutter is improved by using the projection statistics(PS) that is robust to multiple outliers. The method of clutter covariance matrix estimation using a median value and the conventional method are also investigated and then compared. From the simulation results of STAP, the method of clutter covariance matrix estimation using a median value shows better performance than the conventional method for the calculation of the SINR loss, and MSMI for the single target and the multiple targets regardless of the NHD methods.

  • This paper presents the approaching target above ground tracking based on Kalman filter applied to the proximity sensor for the active defense system. The proximity sensor located on the front of the countermeasure is not easy to detect when the anti-tank threat enters a fragment dispersion range due to limited antenna beamwidth. In addition, it is difficult for the proximity sensor to detect the anti-tank threat accurately at a terrestrial environment including various clutters. To solve these problems, this study presents the approaching target above ground tracking based on Kalman filter and applies the novel estimation method for a noise covariance matrix to improve a tracking performance. Then, a high tracking performance of Kalman filter applied the proposed noise covariance matrix is presented through field firing test results and the validity of the proposed study is examined.
