  • A mill trial was performed in a kraft paper mill in order to evaluate the possibility of utilizing dual polymer dry strength aids system consisting of cationic PVAm and anionic PAM. It was found that the cationic PVAm - anionic PAM dry strength additives can improve paper strength without significantly disturbing the stability of the kraft papermaking process when virgin UKP was used as a furnish. Tensile strength (25.3% in machine direction, 48.4% in cross machine direction), elongation of paper (31.6%, 15.6%) and tensile energy absorption (48%, 54%) were improved. Air permeability of the kraft paper was improved as well (22%). Tear strength was decreased with PVAm dry strength aids system, but it can be compensated with decreasing refining degree. In addition, the mill trial results indicate that highly air permeable kraft sack paper can be produced by the addition of PVAm dry strength agents at the stock with reduced freeness.

  • To increase the fracture toughness of paper made of Sw-BKP, refining and kneading conditions were analyzed. Curl and kink was known to increase the strain at break and the fracture touhness. Sequence of multiple stage beating, beating load and kneading were compared. When we applied a kneading treatment using a kneader at the final step, the most of the fiber transformation such as curl and kink occurred, the more the bulk and air-permeability improved. Physical strength and TEA(tensile energy absorption) were increased higher when kneading treatment before refining than only refining treatment was performed. TEA was increased because of higher elongation. It was found that the highest fracture toughness was obtained when applying the kneading treatment to the fibers in the pre-treatment step rather than in the middle step of beating or in the final step of beating.

  • The synthetic steps of sodium(2-(2, 6-dichlorophenyl)amino)phenylacetate were reduced and increased the yield in each steps. The synthetic process was composed to four steps and 2, 6-dichloroaniline and per catalyst in three lots in 80% yield. The steps of acylation and Friedel-Craft reaction were simplified successfully. The final product, diclofenac was obtained in 97% yield by hydrolyzing 1-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-2-indolinone which was gained in third step with Claisen-solution.

  • This study was carried out to investigate improvement of kraft paper sack mixed with recycled paper for sugars and assorted feeds. Four Plies of kraft paper mixed with recycled paper(basis weight : $80g/m^2$) were taken place of two plies of kraft paper made from all pulp(basis weight : $98g/m^2$) and one ply of kraft paper mixed with recycled paper(basis weight : $80g/m^2$) for sugar 30kg. Three Plies of kraft paper mixed with recycled paper(basis weight : $80g/m^2$) were taken place of two plies of kraft paper made from all pulp(basis weight $98g/m^2$) for sugar 15kg and assorted feed 25kg. Physical properties, tensile strength, internal tearing strength and bursting strength, were improved by exchanging kraft paper mixed with recycled paper for kraft paper from all pulp and so kraft paper sacks made from all pulp were no damage in handling. They had so high friction coefficient that there was no danger of collapse on pallet by slipperiness in transportation and handling. And they had high printability so disappearance of printing by the contact with other paper sack in transportation was not found.

  • To recover much residual lignin from the black liquor of kraft pulp. the black liquor was extracted and purified with many organic solvents. Many kinds of lignins were isolated from each fraction obtained and the characteristics of these lignins investigated by $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy. If M$\ddot{o}$rck's method was compared with Kirk's method. M$\ddot{o}$rck's method was better than Kirk's method because the particular signals of each lignin occur more in the former than m the latter. Especially the $^{13}C$-NMR spectrum of the MCS fraction identifies with those of other researchers. The experiment that the kraft lignin from Pinus densiflora S. et Z. found in Korea was investigated by $^{13}C$-NMR spectroscopy was performed first in Korea.

  • Kraft oak lignin and ricestraw lignin from acetosolve pulping were dissolved in 50/50 mixture of tetralin/m-cresol solvent. The dissolved lignin was reacted in the pressurized autoclave which was operating at $350{\sim}500^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 10~20 atms of reaction pressure respectively_Hydrogen pressure of 60~80kg/$cm^2$ was exercising into the pressurized autoclave reactor to create thermochemical hydrogenolysis reaction. It was identified by GLC, GC-MS and HPLC that the alkyl-aryl-${\beta}$-O-4 ether bond of lignin was cleaved and degraded into various smaller molecules of aromatic compound such as phenols and cresols under the reaction conditions around $300^{\circ}C$ and 10 atms of reaction temoerature and pressure. Hydrogenolysis reaction of lignin compound which was done above $500^{\circ}C$ of reaction temperature and 20 atms of reaction pressure showed that the amount of aromatic compound such as phenols and cresols degraded from reactant lignin was decreasing with newly present and increasing water out of product mixtures. It was supposed that new aliphatic compound of high molecular weight hydrocarbon is composed due to higher reaction temperature and pressure of hydrogenolysis reaction such as $500^{\circ}C$ and 20 atms, even though it was almost impossible, to identify what kind of degraded products it was by HPLC.

  • Most cellulose resources come from the higher plants, but bacteria also synthesize same cellulose as in plants. Many scientists have been widely studied on the bacterial cellulose, the process development, manufacturing, even marketing of cellulose fibers. The bacterial celluloses are very different in its physical and morphological structures. These fibers have many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. The fine fibers can produce a smooth paper with enchanced its strength property. But there gave been few reports on the mechanical properties of the processing of bacterial cellulose into structural materials. This study were performed to elucidate the mechanical properties of sheets prepared from bacterial cellulose. Also reinforcing effect of bacterial cellulose on the conventional pulp paper as well as surface structures by scanning electron microscopy were discussed. Paper made from bacterial cellulose is 10 times much stronger than ordinary chemical pulp sheet, and the mixing of bacterial cellulose has a remarkable reinforcing effect on the papers. Mechanical strengthes were increased with the increase of bacterial cellulose content in the sheet. This strength increase corresponds to the increasing water retention value and sheet density with the increase of bacterial cellulose content. Scanning electron micrographs were shown that fine microfibrills of bacterial celluloses covered on the surfaces of hardwood pulp fibers, and enhanced sheet strength by its intimate fiber bonding.

  • The purpose of this study was to decrease pollutants of effluents from KP bleaching. Multistage bleaching that combined with O, Eo, and C/D stage was conducted, after optimum bleaching conditions of O, Eo, and C/D stage were determined. Moreover the properties for bleached pulps and pollution level of bleaching effluent were measured by each standard method. Due to increase on the brightness and delignification of pulps by O, Eo, and C/D stage bleaching. It was possible that bleaching sequences were reduced from five stage to four stage. In addition to, OC/DEoD and OC/DEopD bleaching sequences had higher brightness than CEDED bleaching sequence. The pulps bleached by O and Eo stage had higher in tensile index than conventional bleaching sequences with the similar results in burst and tear index. While each bleaching sequences had little differences, bleaching sequences with Eo stage had higher in physical properties than with Eop stage. The pollution level measured by Chemical Oxygen Demand(COD), Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD) and Color of bleaching effluents were much lower in combined bleaching sequences of O, Eo and C/D stage than that of CEDED sequence. Particularly, a pollution index of bleaching effluents generated by C/DEoDEB and OC/DEopDED bleaching sequences were lower than that from the other bleaching sequences.

  • This study developed rice packaging paper with exterminating performance against rice weevils such as Tenebroides mauritanicus and Sitophilus oryzae. The exterminating performance of packaging paper was given by treatment of garlic extractives and pine-leaf powder, respectively. For the exterminating test, rice weevils were put in petri dish containing non-treated packaging paper and functional packaging paper for twenty days. Right after being put in the petri dish, the rice weevils moved fast toward the area in the non-treated paper escaping from that in the functional paper. The lethality of the rice weevils on the functional paper reached over 50 per cent. The physical properties of the functional packaging paper were rarely changed in spite of treatment of the exterminating agents.

  • This study was carried out to explore optimum use of the products generated from the National Forest Management Operation (NFMO) as raw materials for kraft pulp. First of all, different wood species from NFMO were randomly mixed, and then they were used to make kraft pulp under the specified condition. All kraft pulps made from the mixed species displayed equal physical properties to those from foreign wood chips used in Moorim P&P Co. Ltd. For optical properties, most of the unbleached pulps had high brightness but the pulp made from wood species containing chestnut tree showed the lowest brightness due to its high kappa number. Finally, the products from NFMO had little negative effects on the properties of kraft pulps. This means that they could be used as complementary raw materials for kraft pulps with foreign wood chips.
