  • The paper presents an evaluation of the tensile strength of the expansion anchor that can cause failure in the concrete based on the design of the anchorage. Tests of the heavy-duty anchor and the wedge anchor that are domestically manufactured and installed in plain concrete members are conducted to probe the effects of the embedded depth, concrete strength, and anchors spacing. The design of post-installed steel anchors is presented using the Concrete Capacity Design (CCD) approach. The CCD method is applied to predict the concrete failure load of the expansion anchor in plain concrete under monotonic loading for important applications. The concrete tension capacity of the fastenings with heavy-duty anchors and wedge anchors in plain concrete predicted using the CCD method is compared with the test results. For the CCD method, a normalization coefficient of 9.94 is appropriale for the nominal concrete breakout strength of an anchor or a group of wedge anchors in tension. On the other hand, a normalization coefficient of 11.50 is appropriate for the nominal concrete breakout strength of an anchor or a group of heavy-duty anchors in tension.

  • In this study, a total of six site cases were reviewed to assess the site applicability of portable dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT) by identifying the cause of damage to the damaged reinforced earth wall using portable dynamic cone penetration test. An improved dynamic concrete penetration tester was used at the site to enable ground surveys of more than 6 meters. The test results were compared with the results of the standard penetration test (SPT) and the correlation was analyzed. Through the analysis of various field application cases, it was found that portable dynamic cone penetration test was very convenient to apply at the site of the damaged reinforced earth wall, and DCPT could play a major role in identifying the cause of damage and verifying stability of the retaining wall by continuously identifying the ground strength. In addition, it was found that the results of the dynamic cone penetration test and the standard penetration test showed a correlation of N≒(1/3~2/3)·Nd in sandy soil.

  • To assess the stability of a slope and the likelihood of its loss or collapse requires information about the ground, such as the composition of the stratum and its mechanical characteristics. This information is generally gathered through standard penetration testing (SPT) and cone penetration testing. SPT is not widely used due to problems with accessing slopes, most of which are steep and without ramps. A drop cone penetrometer, a portable device that can make up for these shortcomings, can be used in a limited way in some circumstances. Therefore, we developed a portable drilling machine and a small dynamic cone penetration test module that can easily access a slope site and perform SPT. The correlation of the developed system's results with those from SPT was analyzed. Analysis of the correlation between the energy shear rate passing to the load during the different test types established that the energy shear rate is reflected in the test result. The correlation between corrected dynamic cone penetration testing and corrected SPT was Nd' = 3.13 N'.

  • A series of calibration chamber tests are performed to investigate the spatial distribution of the excess porewater pressure due to piezocone penetration into overconsolidated clays. It was observed that the excess porewater pressure increases monotonically from the piezocone surface to the outer boundary of the shear zone and then decreases logarithmically, approaching zero at the outer boundary of the plastic zone. It was also found that the size of the shear zone decreases from approximately 2.2 to 1.5 times the cone radius with increasing OCR, while the plastic radius is about 11 times the piezocone radius, regardless of the OCR. Based on the modified Cam clay model and the cylindrical cavity expansion theory, the expressions to predict the Initial porewater pressure at the piezocone were developed, considering the effects of the strain rate and stress anisotropy. The method of predicting the spatial distribution of excess porewater pressure proposed in this study was verified by comparing it with the porewater pressure measured in overconsolidated specimens in the calibration chamber.

  • Cone penetration tests (CPTs) have been increasingly used for site characterizations. However, the site investigations using CPTs are often limited due to soil conditions depending on the cone size and capacity of the CPT system. The small sectional area of a miniature cone improves the applicability of the CPT system due to the increased capacity of the CPT system. A continuous intrusion system using a coiled rod allows fast and cost effective site investigation. In this study, the performance of the continuous intrusion miniature cone penetration test (CIMCPT) system has been evaluated by comparison tests with the standard CPT system at several construction sites in Korea. The results show that the CIMCPT system has a same performance with the CPT system and has advantages on the mobility and applicability. According to field verification tests for scale effect evaluation, the cone tip resistance evaluated by CIMCPT overestimates by 10% comparing to standard CPTs. A crawler mounted with the CIMCPT system has been implemented to improve accessibility to soft ground, and has shown improvement over the truck type CIMCPT system. Therefore, the improved CIMCPT system can be utilized as a cost effective and highly reliable soil investigation methodology to detect the depth of soft ground and to evaluate soil classification.

  • Elastic behavior of the railway roadbed which supports the repeating dynamic loads of the train is mainly affected by the shear modulus of the upper roadbed. Therefore, shear wave velocity estimation of the uniformly compacted roadbed can be used to estimate the elastic behavior of the railway roadbed. The objective of this study is to suggest the relationship between the dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the shear wave velocity ($V_s$) of the upper roadbed in order to estimate the shear wave velocity by using the dynamic cone penetration test (DCPT). To ensure the reliability of the relationship, the dynamic cone penetration test and the measurement of the shear wave velocity are conducted on the constructed upper roadbed. As a method for measurement of the shear wave velocity, cross hole is used and then the dynamic cone penetration test is performed at a center point between the source and the receiver of the cross hole. As a result of the correlation of the dynamic cone penetration index and the shear wave velocity at the same depths, the shear wave velocity is estimated as a form of involution of the dynamic cone penetration index with a determinant coefficient above 0.8. The result of this study can be used to estimate both the shear wave velocity and the strength of the railway roadbed using the dynamic cone penetrometer.

  • Using the results of the Piezocone Penetration Test (PCPT) which were executed at the Yangsan-Mulgum site, the applicability of the interpretation methods for estimating the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) of soft clay was evaluated. At the same time, laboratory soil tests using the total of 172 undisturbed soft clay samples from the 44 regions of the Yangsan-Mulgum site were performed to study the differency in the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) compared to the results of PCPT. The calculated constrained modulus ($M_{\varepsilon}$) and coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) using the results of consolidation laboratory tests which are based upon the consolidation theory of Terzaghi were compared with the predicted constrained modulus ($M_p$) and coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) from the PCPT. The relationship between the predicted constrained modulus ($M_p$) and the calculated constrained modulus($M_c$) were showed good correlation. The $M_p$ by the Jones & Rust method were showed mostly similar to the calculated constrained modulus ($M_c$). The relationship between the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) obtained from the consolidation tests and the calculated coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) were showed a linear relationship. The results of the calculated coefficient of consolidation ($C_{v-{M_p}}$) were about 54% of the value of the coefficient of consolidation ($C_v$) obtained from the consolidation tests.

  • Automated vehicles rely on information collected through sensors to drive. Therefore, the uncertainty of the information collected from a sensor is an important to address. To this end, research is conducted in the field of road and traffic to solve the uncertainty of these sensors through infrastructure or facilities. Therefore, this study developed a traffic cone that can maintaing the gaze guidance function in the construction site by securing sufficient LiDAR detection performance even in rainy conditions and verified its improvement effect through demonstration. Two types of cones were manufactured, a cross-type and a flat-type, to increase the reflective performance compared to an existing cone. The demonstration confirms that the flat-type traffic cone has better detection performance than an existing cone, even in 50 mm/h rainfall, which affects a driver's field of vision. In addition, it was confirmed that the detection level on a clear day was maintained at the 20 mm/h rain for both cones. In the future, improvement measures should be developed so that the traffic cones, that can improve the safety of automated driving, can be applied.

  • The disturbance zone and measured values are affected by the size of the penetrometer. The local value may be measured by the smaller penetrometer. An ultra small Micro-Cone penetrometer (5mm in outer diameter) is designed and manufactured to characterize soil properties with minimum disturbance during penetration tests. The tip resistance is measured by using stain gauges attached near the Micro-Cone. In addition, the friction sleeve is adopted to effectively remove the skin friction from the tip resistance. Design concern includes the installation of stain gauges, circuits, penetration systems, penetration rate, sampling rate, operating temperature, and calibration. Application tests show that the clay interface, and the soil layers consisting of clay and sand are clearly detected by the Micro-Cone. Furthermore, the cone tip resistances measured by the Micro-Cone and the miniature cone (16mm in outer diameter) are similar. Note the resolution is much higher in the Micro-Cone. This study shows that the Micro-Cone may effectively detect the soil interface with high resolution, and with minimum disturbance.

  • Economic damage is occurring due to landslides and debris flows that occur when the ground artificially created for roads or photovoltaic power generation facilities is weakened by rainfall such as torrential rain. In order to understand the stability of the artificially created ground, it is very important to check the ground information such as the compositional state and mechanical characteristics of the stratum. However, since most of the investigation sites are steep slopes or there are no access roads, it is not easy to enter the drilling equipment commonly used to check ground information and perform standard penetration tests. In this study, a dynamic cone penetration test (DCP) device using a miniaturized auger drilling equipment and an automatic drop device was developed to check the cone resistance value and the dynamic cone penetration test value and analyze the correlation with the standard penetration test value to confirm its applicability at the mountain solar power generation site. As a result, the cone resistance value is qd = 0.46 N and the dynamic cone penetration test value is Nd = 1.58 N, confirming a value similar to the results of existing researchers to secure its reliability.
