The present study proposes a phased model to assess the lifecycle $CO_2$ amount of concrete structures. The considered system boundary is from cradle to recycling, which includes constituent material, transportation, batching and mixing in ready-mixed concrete plant, use and demolition of structure, and crushing and recycling of demolished concrete. The $CO_2$ uptake of concrete by carbonation during lifetime (40 years) of a structure and the recycling life (20 years) after demolition is estimated using a simple approach generalized to predict the carbonation depth from the surfaces of concrete element and recycled aggregates. Based on the proposed phased model, a performance evaluation table is realized to straightforwardly examine the lifecycle $CO_2$ amount of concrete structures. The proposed model demonstrates that the contribution of ordinary portland cement (OPC) to lifecycle $CO_2$ emission of the concrete structure occupies approximately 85%. Furthermore, the $CO_2$ uptake is estimated to be approximately 15~18% of the lifecycle $CO_2$ emissions of concrete structures, which corresponds to be 19~22% of the emissions from OPC production. Overall, the proposed $CO_2$ performance table is expected to be practically useful as a guideline to determine the $CO_2$ emission or uptake at each phase of concrete structures.
In this study finite element analysis using hyperbolic model was performed to predict the characteristics of stress-strain behaviour on concrete face earth dam (CFED : a tentative name) raised with coarse-grained materials corresponding to the face slab bedding zone of concrete face rockfill dam (CFRD). The results of finite element analysis were compared with field monitoring data, and the comparison showed a good agreement. And, the analysis results including locus of maximum displacement, maximum stress, stress concentration, and irregular load transfer would be used to devise rational field monitoring schemes for construction management and quality control during construction of CFED.
The objective of this study is to establish an rational mixture-proportioning procedure for low-$CO_2$ concrete using supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) achieving the targeted $CO_2$ reduction ratio as well as the conventional requirements such as initial slump, air content, and 28-day compressive strength of concrete. To evaluate the effect of SCM level on the $CO_2$ emission and compressive strength of concrete, a total of 12537 data sets were compiled from the available literature and ready-mixed concrete plants. The amount of $CO_2$ emission of concrete was assessed under the system boundary from cradle to concrete production stage at a ready-mixed concrete plant. Based on regression analysis using the established database, simple equations were proposed to determine the mixture proportions of concrete such as the type and level of SCMs, water-to-binder ratio, and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratio. Furthermore, the $CO_2$ emissions for a given concrete mixture can be straightforwardly calculated using the proposed equations. Overall, the developed mixture-proportioning procedure is practically useful for determining the initial mixture proportions of low-$CO_2$ concrete in the ready-mixed concrete field.

A moment-curvature relationship to simulate the behavior of reinforced concrete beam under cyclic loading is introduced. Unlike previous moment-curvature models and the layered section approach, the proposed model takes into consideration the bond-slip effect by using monotonic moment-curvature relationship constructed on the basis of the bond-slip relation and corresponding equilibrium equation at each nodal point. In addition, the use of curved unloading and reloading branches inferred from the stress-strain relation of steel gives more exact numerical result. The advantages of the proposed model, comparing to layered section approach, may be on the reduction in calculation time and memory space in case of its application to large structures. The modification of the moment-curvature relation to reflect the fixed-end rotation and pinching effect is also introduced. Finally, correlation studies between analytical results and experimental studies are conducted to establish the validity of the proposed model.
On the basis of the strain-based shear strength model developed in the previous study, a strength model was developed to predict the direct punching shear capacity and unbalanced moment-carrying capacity of interior and exterior slab-column connections. Since the connections are severely damaged by flexural cracking, punching shear was assumed to be resisted mainly by the compression zone of the slab critical section. Considering the interaction with the compressive normal stress developed by the flexural moment, the shear strength of the compression zone was derived on the basis of the material failure criteria of concrete subjected to multiple stresses. As a result, shear capacity of the critical section was defined according to the degree of flexural damage. Since the exterior slab-column connections have unsymmertical critical sections, the unbalanced moment-carrying capacity was defined according to the direction of unbalanced moment. The proposed strength model was applied to existing test specimens. The results showed that the proposed method predicted the strengths of the test specimens better than current design methods.
This paper discusses the analysis method of prestressed concrete girder integral abutment bridges for a 75-year bridge life and the development of prediction models for abutment displacements under thermal loading due to annual temperature fluctuation and time-dependent loading. The developed nonlinear numerical modeling methodologies considered soil-structure interaction between supporting piles and surrounding soils and between abutment and backfills. Material nonlinearity was also considered to simulate differential rotation in construction joints between abutment and backwall. Based on the numerical modeling methodologies, a parametric study of 243 analysis cases, considering five parameters: (1) thermal expansion coefficient, (2) bridge length, (3) backfill height, (4) backfill stiffness, and (5) pile soil stiffness, was performed to established prediction models for abutment displacements over a bridge life. The parametric study results revealed that thermal expansion coefficient, bridge length, and pile-soil stiffness significantly influenced the abutment displacement. Bridge length parameter significantly influenced the abutment top displacement at the centroid of the superstructure, which is similar to the free expansion analysis results. Developed prediction model can be used for a preliminary design of integral abutment bridges.
This paper presents an analytical model for calculation of crack widths in reinforced concrete structures. The model is mathematically derived from the actual bond stress-slip relationships between the reinforcement and the surrounding concrete, and the relationships summarized in CEB-FIP Model Code 1990 and Eurocode 2 are employed in this study together with the numerical analysis result of a linear slip distribution along the interface at the stabilized cracking stage. With these, the actual strains of the steel and the concrete are integrated respectively along the embedment length between the adjacent cracks so as to obtain the difference in the axial elongation. The model is applied to the test results available in literatures, and the predicted values are shown to be in good agreement with the experimentally measured data.

The objective of this study is the investigation of the influence of carbonation on the penetration of chloride ions in reinforced concrete sections for different mix proportions and environmental conditions. A comprehensive numerical model based on the change of the pore structure and the chemical equilibrium was used for this combined action of carbonation and chloride ingress. The empirical formulae of some parameters in this model are estimated according to numerous experimental data. And, a set of data analysis is carried out to simplify the estimation of model variables to reduce the computational cost. A coupled simulation of the transports of carbon dioxide, chloride ions, heat and moisture is carried out. Then, the parametric analysis is given and the numerical results show that the effect of carbonation of the free chloride ingress is significant and depends on the binder types and concrete mix proportion.
Moisture evaporates, when concrete is exposed to fire, not only at concrete surface but also at inside the concrete to adjust the equilibrium and transfer properties of moisture. The equilibrium properties of moisture are described by means of water vapor sorption isotherms, which illustrate the hysteretical behavior of materials. In this paper, the prediction method of the moisture distribution inside the concrete members at fire is presented. Finite element method is employed to facilitate the moisture diffusion analysis for any position of member. And the moisture diffusivity model of high strength concrete by high temperature is proposed. To demonstrate the validity of this numerical procedure, the prediction by the proposed algorithm is compared with the test result of other researcher. The proposed algorithm shows a good agreement with the experimental results including the vaporization effect inside the concrete.
Epoxy asphalt concrete is used to reduce dead load and to increase durability on long-span steel bridge overlay. The strength development properties of epoxy asphalt concrete are affected by time and temperature because epoxy asphalt is two-phase reactive materials. The strength development of epoxy asphalt concrete should be predicted precisely to decide traffic opening time. Based on this background in mind, the prediction model for traffic opening time for epoxy asphalt pavement was proposed in this research. The developed model using nonlinear curve fitting revealed R2 value of 0.943 while the R2 value of the existing model using chemical kinetics was 0.806. An improved precise prediction result is to be obtained when the prediction model uses accurate temperature data of pavement.
