Marine bridges are readily deteriorated due to the exposure to marine environment. The concrete deterioration occurred by corrosion of steel in concrete is mainly relevant to chloride in seawater. Chloride ions penetrate through porous concrete, and then reach to the reinforcing steel, and finally corroded them. The corrosion by-products(rusts) increase the volume as much as 6 to 10 times of origin steel. this creates expanding pressure and tensile stress, which cause the structures cracking and spalling. Sometimes the rebar corrosion is accelerated, and then collapsed catastrophically. In order to prevent corrosion damage, it is important to understand well regarding the reason of concrete corrosion, the quantification of its damage, and protection method/system to stop or to mitigate the corrosion. In this study, slab specimens were fabricated to evaluate the effect of cathodic protection which was simulated to marine bridges, and/or port structures. Zn-mesh sacrificial anode has been applied as a chathodic protection system and accelerated test conditions, i.e. temperature and salt concentration have been used in this study.

This paper studies impact performance of wire-mesh and steel fiber-reinforced concrete based on high-velocity impact experiments using hard spherical balls. In this experimental study, panel specimens were tested with various parameters such as steel fiber volume fraction, presence/absence of wire mesh, panel thickness, impact velocity, and aggregate size for the comparison of impact resistance performance for each specimen. While improvement of the impact resistance for reducing the penetration depth is barely affected with steel fiber volume fraction, the impact resistance to scabbing and perforation is improved substantially. This was due to the fact that the steel fiber had bridging effects in concrete matrix. The wire mesh helped minimizing the crater diameter of front and back face and enhanced the impact resistance to scabbing and perforation; however, the wire mesh did not affect the penetration depth. The wire mesh also reduced the bending deformation of the specimen with wire mesh, though some specimens had splitting bond failure on the rear face. Additionally, use of 20 mm aggregates is superior to 8 mm aggregates in terms of penetration depth, but for reducing the crater diameter on front and back faces, the use of 8 mm aggregates would be more efficient.

Most of the sulfur is obtained from desulfurization of natural gas and crude oil. In Korea, more than 120 tons of sulfur are produced by refinery, and about 50 % of the produced sulfur is used as a raw material for the production of fertilizer and sulfuric acid. Modified sulfur is manufactured from excessive sulfur that could be used to improve concrete properties, and this study evaluated concrete strength and durability that contains modified sulfur. Flexural and compressive strengths of concrete with sulfur modified polymer were comparable to those of OPC concrete with mixing water at similar temperatures, while the strengths increased a little as mixing water temperature increased. It was also confirmed that the resistance to freeze-thaw damage was more dependent on entrained air characteristics obtained by a proper use of air entraining agent than on the use of sulfur modified polymer. When concrete was immersed in 5 % sulfuric acid, the rate of reduction in compressive strength of OPC concrete was less than 1/4 of the strength reduction of concrete with sulfur modified polymer. Also, the resistance of concrete with sulfur modified polymer to scaling due to the use of de-icing salt was evaluated as Class 1, while that of OPC concrete was evaluated as Class 4, as aggregates were exposed. Accordingly, it is believed that sulfur modified polymer could be effectively used for bridge deck concrete since sulfur modified polymer improves the durability of concrete.

In this study, the quality of recycled aggregate for concrete was investigated as the number of recycled aggregate crushing cycles, grinder and crusher, peeling and crushing. First, the quality of density, absorption ratio and solid content was improved as the separation distance decreased and the number of crushing increased, depending on the number of crushing of recycled aggregate and the distance between mantle and cone cave. The quality of density, absorption ratio and solid content was improved as the wire mesh used in striking plate and the number of hammers increased, depending on the type of striking plate and the number of hammers.
The strengthening of reinforced concrete structures by externally bonded GFRP has become increasingly common in resent years. However the analysis and design method for GFRP plate strengthening of RC beams is not well established yet. The purpose of present paper is, therefore, to define the failure mechanism and failure behavior of strengthened RC beam using GFRP and then to propose a resonable method for the calculation of interface debonding load for those beams. From the experimental results of beams strengthened by GFRP, the influence of length and thickness, width of plate on the interfacial debonding failure behavior of beam is studied and, on the basis of test results, the semi-empirical equation to predict debonding load is developed. The proposed theory based on nonlinear analysis and critical flexural crack width, predicts relatively well the debonding failure load of test beams and may be efficiently used in the analysis and design of strengthened RC beams using GFRP.
Concrete is generally accepted to have good inherent fire resistance. It mainly relies on the assumption that concrete has low heat-transfer characteristic and spatting does not occur during the course of a fire. However, the significant numbers of fire accidents have shown in recent years that incidence of spatting has caused sever damages to many structures. This review has systematically investigated the behaviour of concrete in fire, including phenomenon of spatting, with respect to the theorical consideration and experimental results. Explosive spatting is caused by the build-up of water vapor pressure in concrete subjected to increasing temperatures. When this pressure exceeds the tensile strength of the concrete over a fire-exposed area, explosive spatting can result in a typical temperature range between $200^{\circ}C\;and\;400^{\circ}C$. The major functions are known to be moisture content, pore pressure, load ratio, and heating regime.

Generally, reinforced concrete structures exposed to the outside temperature are affected by freezing and thawing process during winter and early spring. These freeze-thawing process can lead to the reduction in durability of concrete as cracking or surface spalling. This paper is to study the flexural behavior of RC beams exposed to freeze-thawing environments. To compare the difference in flexural behavior of RC Beams, limited tests were conducted under different types of Longitudinal steel ratio and freeze-thawing cycles. For this purpose, fourteen small-scale RC beams ($100mm{\times} 100mm {\times}600mm$) were strengthened in monotonic and cyclic loadings, subjected to up to 150, 300 cycles freeze-thawing from $-18{\sim}4^{\circ}C$. It is thought that experimental results will be used as basic data to evaluate flexural behavior of RC beams exposed to freeze-thawing.

Concrete is a material generally used to build structures and it is exposed to various environment conditions. In particular, a medium such as water lets noxious factors flow into concrete, causing a lot of damage. Therefore, different kinds of materials are being developed to increase the durability of concrete. Among such materials, silane and siloxane compound are known to have a high utilization as an absorption inhibitor. However, if aged or deteriorated reinforced concrete is treated with those compounds, they easily come off the concrete and lose their function since the basic material is weak. This study conducted an experiment to provide concrete with both an absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening by using melamine-formaldehyde resins that are surface-treated with siloxane compound. In addition, a study on the porosity and surface hardness characteristics of a concrete was conducted to check the absorption-inhibiting effect and surface strengthening.

In the recent construction industry, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers(CFRPs) have been highly considered as innovative strengthening materials for civil structures due to their superior material properties. This paper is to offer design data and strengthening efficiency of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP Plate. Static tests were carried out to evaluate failure modes and strengthening capacity. Displacements and strains of steel and CFRP plates were obtained and analyzed through a series of fatigue tests. Also, Those evaluated the energy dissipation. Results of the tests showed increase in strengthening ratios caused debonding failure at the end of beams. For the beams wrapped with CFRP sheets around the end of the plates, debonding failure mode that was induced from flexural cracks was indicated. Through the fatigue tests, it was observed that displacements, strains of steel and CFRP plates converged into certain values. It is also proved that the beams strengthened with CFRP plates are able to resist fatigue loading under serviceability.

This paper predicts premature failure load of reinforced concrete beams by epoxy-boned partially steel plates. A parametric study is conducted to estimate premature failure load of beams such as with or without stirrups, unplated length ratio, steel and reinforcement ratio, shear span to depth ratio of reinforcement beam. By results of finite element analysis, it turned out that the unplated length played a dominant role in partially plated beams but reinforcement ratio and shear span to depth ratio effected the premature failure load. The approximate expression with regard to combined design variables is compared with experimental results. It shows closely agreement.
