The cable in the cable-supported structures is long, therefore it can be reasonable to apply the different models, compared with those used for general steel elements. This paper compares the statistical models with existing cable fatigue data, after deriving the cdf(cumulative distibution function) with modifying the log-normal distribution, the existing extremal distributions so as to include length effect. The paper presents the appropriate model for analyzing and assessing the fatigue behavior of cable which is being used for actual structures.

In this paper, we introduce a newly developed winding model to simulate the motion of underwater cable consisting of winch drums. It is assumed that only tension affects the underwater cable motion. This assumption is suitable for simulating the underwater cable motion towed by a navel vessel in a straight ahead maneuver. The underwater cable is discretized using Nodal Position Finite Element Method. This numerical method is known to be suitable for predicting the underwater cable motion with large deformation because it can express geometric nonlinearity. In this paper, the validity of the numerical method was secured by comparing it with the depth information of towing cable measured through sea experiments.

This study presents the ULMM(unstrained-length-modification method) to determine the cable tension consistent with target tension after arrangement of cable-members by controlling the unstrained length of cables. This method used to be shown to determine the exact unstrained length for cable-supported bridge with elastic catenary cable. The some verification examples show to determine the unstrained length that satisfies the target tension and to obtain the satisfactory result for cable-supported bridge. Accordingly this modification method of the unstrained length in this study is used to introduce the satisfactory target tension.

This paper presents an investigation on the change in the statical behavior and the ultimate capacity of steel cable-stayed bridges after cable failure. Cable failure can occur due to fire, direct vehicle clash accidents, cable or anchorage fatigue, and so on. Moreover, the cable may be temporarily disconnected during cable replacement work. When cable failure occurs, the load, that was supported by the broken cable is first transferred to another cable. Then the structural state changes due to the interaction between the girder, mast, and cables. Moreover, it can be predicted that the ultimate capacity will decrease after cable failure, because of the loss of the support system. In this study, the analysis method is suggested to find the new equilibrium state after cable failure based on the theory of nonlinear finite element analysis. Moreover, the ultimate analysis method is also suggested to analyze the ultimate behavior of live loads after cable failure. For a more rational analysis, a three-step analysis procedure is suggested and used, which consisted of initial shape analysis, cable failure analysis, and live load analysis. Using this analysis method, an analytical study was performed to investigate the changes in the structural state and ultimate behavior of steel cable-stayed bridges.

The demand for electric power is increasing every year. All facilities operating at power stations and all facilities used in transmitting high volumes of electric power are therefore expected to operate with a high degree of reliability. 6.6 kV XLPE 100 SQ 1C cables are used to deliver high levels of generated electric power. Depending on the method of manufacture, installation environment, and usage conditions, the deterioration processes of power cables start from the instant of operation. Cable junctions may break down in three years from the start of operation due to manufacturing or construction defects. We have invented the first device in Korea to monitor the status of live cables and installed these at Korea Western Power Co., Ltd.. We have set the criteria to determine deterioration status and specified the degree of deterioration at which one should replace the cables. In this paper, we present the effect of insulation layer and sheath on the insulation resistance status in cables.

Suspension bridge cables made of high strength steel wires require periodical maintenance in accordance with the axial force of cable-band bolts, since the bolts in suspension bridges can undergo tension decrease due to creep of cable wires, bolt relaxation, load fluctuation, and cable re-arrangement, etc. Consequently, this study is aimed at investigating and subsequently evaluating the critical factors with respect to the bolt tension-decrease phenomenon in SR suspension bridge in Korea, based on field monitoring, theoretical studies, and field record management works. From the observation, it is interesting to note that the decrease in the bolt tension force is typically accompanied by plastic deformation of the zinc plating layers in the cable wires. In addition, a framework corresponding to generic methodologies to characterize the deformation in terms of the bolt tension-decrease and long-term history management has been developed in this exploratory study.
