Influence of the Leading Edge Shape of a 2-Dimensional hydrofoil on Cavitation Characteristics (2차원 날개단면의 앞날 형상 변화에 따른 캐비테이션 특성 연구)

  • In order to improve cavitation characteristics for a high-speed propeller, leading edge shape of a 2-D hydrofoil is investigated numerically and experimentally. For flowfield analysis around the leading edge, the incompressible Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(RANS) equation is solved using the standard $k-\varepsilon$ turbulence model and a finite volume method(FVM). The cavitation thickness, which is occurred on hydrofoil surface, is predicted using the panel code. It is shown that the calculation codes predict the experimental trend fairly well.   • The author suggested control method of partial cavitation with electro-magnetic accelerator and showed that the cavity shape decreased with this suggestion which compared with the theoretical ones. Using the cavity flow method proposed by the author in this paper, it is predicted that cavitation volume of the shape is less than the previous type one. Comparisons were performed in order to verify these facts, using both shape which calculated by the method. It was found that the difference of cavitation performance between the two shape of volume were decreased, because of the new method accelerated of flow more than previous theoretical ones.

  • Hull-propeller-rudder interactions are studied by the iterative computational procedures. Hull effects on the propeller are reflected through the effective velocities computed by the vortex ring method which used the measured nominal wake as input data. A potential based panel method has been developed to solve the propeller-rudder interactions using the obtained effective velocities. Steady flow characteristics around the rudder surface can be obtained by computing the induced velocities on the rudder by the propeller and vice versa are computed by the iterative manner until the converged solutions are obtained. Flow characteristics around the propeller and the rudder are measured by Laser Doppler Velocimetry(L.D.V.) in large cavitation tunnel at Samsung Heavy industries. The gap flow model is adopted to solve the characteristics of the horn rudder. Numerical results are compared with the experimental values and the computed velocity fields and pressure distributions with rudder angle on the horn rudder surface show good agreement with measured ones in large cavitation tunnel.

  • This study describes the analysis results of unsteady cavitating flows behavior inside nozzle of the prototype piezo-driven injector. This piezo-driven injector has been recognised as one of the next generation diesel injector due to a higher driven efficiency than the conventional solenoid-driven injector. The three dimensional geometry model along the central cross-section regarding of one injection hole has been used to simulate the cavitating flows for injection time by at fully transient simulation with cavitation model. The cavitation model incorporates many of the fundamental physical processes assumed to take place in cavitating flows. The simulations performed were both fully transient and 'pseudo' steady state, even if under steady state boundary conditions. We could analyze the effect the pressure drop to the sudden acceleration of fuel, which is due to the fastest response of needle, on the degree of cavitation existed in piezo-driven injector nozzle

  • Effect of elliptical orifice on the spray characteristics of liquid jet ejecting into subsonic crossflows were experimentally studied. Circular/elliptical plain-orifice injectors, which had different ratios of the orifice length to diameter and major axis to minor axis, were used for transverse injection. Compared with the previous research, breakup lengths of elliptical nozzles are shorter than circular nozzles at all experimental condition. Cavitation/hydraulic flip are considered as a reduction in the breakup length at all circular/elliptical nozzle. In the case of liquid column trajectories, major axis which was placed to the crossflows, increases the frontal area of the liquid column exposed to the crossflows. Hence, the aerodynamic force exerted on the jet is increased and the penetration depth is reduced.

  • Several maintenance issues related to cavitation erosion and fatigue cracks in the water turbine subcomponents of pumped-storage plants, such as a runner and a draft tube, have been reported in the past. Generally, the pumped-storage plants provide ancillary services, such as black-start and system stabilization. The ancillary services are responsible for cyclic low opening operation of the guide vanes. It has been empirically established that this low opening operation further damages the water turbine subcomponents. In this study, the acceleration effect of the low opening operation on the cavitation erosion and fatigue of the water turbine is quantitatively assessed through finite element flow analysis, finite element stress analysis, and fatigue analysis. As a result of the assessment, it is identified that the cavitation potential increases and the turbine efficiency decreases with a decrease in the opening of the guide vane. Also, the low opening operation has an insignificant effect on the fatigue even though it increases the maximum stress values at the runner blade roots.

  • A numerical solution method of the incompressible Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations is applied for calculating turbulent flows and performances of a marine propeller in open-water, four-quadrant conditions. Computed propeller flows of the model propeller P4381, for which the experimental data of the open-water performances exist, reveal complex viscous-flow characteristics including three-dimensional flow separations in various off-design conditions and also computed propeller thrusts and torques agree quite well with experimental data except some cases for which severe propeller cavitations occurred in the experiment.

  • Underwater noise radiated from submarines is directly related to the probability of being detected by the sonar of an enemy vessel. Therefore, minimizing the noise of a submarine is essential for improving survival outcomes. For modern submarines, as the speed and size of a submarine increase and noise reduction technology is developed, interest in flow noise around the hull has been increasing. In this study, a noise analysis technique was developed to predict flow noise generated around a submarine shape considering the free surface effect. When a submarine is operated near a free surface, turbulence-induced noise due to the turbulence of the flow and bubble noise from breaking waves arise. First, to analyze the flow around a submarine, VOF-based incompressible two-phase flow analysis was performed to derive flow field data and the shape of the free surface around the submarine. Turbulence-induced noise was analyzed by applying permeable FW-H, which is an acoustic analogy technique. Bubble noise was derived through a noise model for breaking waves based on the turbulent kinetic energy distribution results obtained from the CFD results. The analysis method developed was verified by comparison with experimental results for a submarine model measured in a Large Cavitation Tunnel (LCT).

GAS-LIQUID TWO-PHASE HOMOGENEOUS MODEL FOR CAVITATING FLOW (캐비테이션 유동해석을 위한 기-액 2상 국소균질 모델)

  • A high resolution numerical method aimed at solving cavitating flow is proposed and applied to gas-liquid two-phase shock tube problem. The present method employs a finite-difference 4th-order Runge-Kutta method and Roe's flux difference splitting approximation with the MUSCL TVD scheme. By applying the homogeneous equilibrium cavitation model, the present density-based numerical method permits simple treatment of the whole gas-liquid two-phase flow field, including wave propagation and large density changes. The speed of sound for gas-liquid two-phase media is derived on the basis of thermodynamic relations and compared with that by eigenvalues. By this method, a Riemann problem for Euler equations of one dimensional shock tube was computed. Numerical results such as detailed observations of shock and expansion wave propagations through the gas-liquid two-phase media at isothermal condition and some data related to computational efficiency are made. Comparisons of predicted results and exact solutions are provided and discussed.

  • Recently submerged objects moving at high speed such as a supercavitating torpedo have been studied for their practical advantage of the dramatic drag reduction. In this study, we are focusing our attention on supercavitating flows around axisymmetric cavitators; a numerical method based on inviscid flow is developed and predicted supercavities around several shapes of 2D and 3D cavitators are presented. The results are validated by comparison of existing theoretical and empirical results. In addition, characteristic features of supercavity shapes and drag forces acting on a real scale torpedo are evaluated according to practically appropriate operating conditions.
