Media Mix for Webtoon Character Marketing : Focusing on (미디어믹스를 활용한 웹툰 캐릭터 마케팅 : <하마탱의 일편단심 하여가>를 중심으로)

  • Similar to the other cultural contents, the character industry is based on the media which acts as the technological background. In fact, the character industry is the process of that a created character accesses to the consumers via media, builds its value and becomes licensed as a brand in the market. Therefore, it is crucial to select the most effective media for the consistence of a character in the market, as well as for construction of a higher brand quality of the character. Today, "Webtoon" might be considered as one of the marketing means which utilizes the Internet media for raising the character as a brand. Webtoon has apparent strength because it can be produced in shorter period and with less expense than through other media. Furthermore, Webtoon can be simply featured by the easiness of two-way communication and transference to another media through it. For these reasons, and according to the result of analyzing some Korean Webtoons, it seems obvious that the most effective media in character marketing is the Internet. In addition to the Internet, the strategic development in the media-mix is also important for establishing a brand of a character. However, the effective media-mix is available only when the character's external identity meets with the trait of its media. For the purpose of learning how the media-mix works when a character reaches for the consumers, a character "Hamataeng" was born and used in the experiment. This study will explain the marketing process through the use of own-created Webtoon and other contents, and suggest the ways to build a brand of a character. In addition, it is also indicated that a media-mixing strategy for transformation and expansion of the character to other media.

  • 정보사회가 되면서 새로운 교수방법들이 많이 개발되었고, 컴퓨터의 발전으로 과거에는 나타날 수 없었던 새로운 형태의 게임들도 존재한다. 본 논문은 컴퓨터 학습을 하는 방법에 있어 캐릭터를 활용한 온라인 퀴즈게임을 이용하였다. 퀴즈게임은 학습자의 흥미도를 높일 수 있고, 계속적인 학습자 관찰이 가능하여 학부모와 교사에게 전자우편으로 결과를 피드백 해줄 수 있는 특징이 있다. 이 퀴즈 게임을 개발하는데 요구되는 사항과 특징들을 설계 상에서 살펴보고, 아이템과 시스템에 요구되는 각종 자료 구조를 설계하였다. 이 시스템을 통하여 학생들은 서로 협동하게 되고, 경쟁을 통하여 학습의 효과를 높일 수 있을 것이다.

  • Expo is now firmly established as one of the top three world event, with Olympic and World Cup, which can be achieved a centralized investment of various contents in economy, technology, and culture and so on. Local government, in South Korea, actively has worked to hold Expo to revitalize the local economy and to increase the local identity since Daejeon World Expo in 1993. However, it is a fact that is hard to find Expo making good professional identity design system of Expo for lack of adequate understanding of the local community and government about design system. Accordingly, this study will suggest the promotion Expo along with the importance of character development, and the present status and analysis of Expo character which is essential to identity establishment of Expo and the core of the communication.

  • Game character customizing has evolved with the desires of users who want to enjoy the scarcity value; thereby, the category which is subjected to character customizing is extending. However, despite such a great interest, character customizing interface has been created for the sake of the convenience of each game developing company, without proven guidelines. The confusion of designers who create interface is caused by using independently created interface without testing the optimal form of interface according to manipulative activity which integrates game character customizing interface, and this confusion leads to the discomfort of users. All the more, studies on character customizing have been mostly concerned with the preference for certain characters according to user propensity or character producing methods. Therefore, basic research into interface relative to character customizing is insufficient. Accordingly, through the development of universal guidelines appropriate for game character customizing interface. the discomfort of users is to be removed. This paper conducted an investigative analysis of the current interface of games which support character customizing, and classified the type of interface. Then, the paper researched 16 types of games that support character customizing out of games ranked within top 50 in the on-line game ranking. As a result of the analysis, the characteristic feature of every game appeared in the offer of detailed optional factors. Those detailed optional factors could be classified, to some extent; however, their manipulative interfaces were discovered not to be classified into different types. The results of this paper will be used as an analytic system in the preparation of the guidelines of game character customizing interface, down the road.

A Case Study on Character Package Design of Japan (일본의 캐릭터패키지디자인 사례분석)

  • In this research, I analyze cases of character packages in Japane, extract the concept of design that was loved by consumers and inmates and succeeded in marketing, and aim to establish the logic and principle. In addition, in the future, when introducing and utilizing the character package design in Korea, this research intends to make a guideline for the development of objective validity and empathic package design. After identifying the design concept and finding the principle by targeting package design of five character of Tohato which mixed various media and expanded sales, I want to find out the cause of success. Therefore, I have studied the theory and principles of enterprise and creative in product strategy through case analysis of character design concept and character package design. As a result, a design that leaving the functional side, having a story, making memories, and inducing a sense of closeness was as a successful case of renewal. In the package design, in some cases, package design execution is more important under the theoretical system according to consumer behavior analysis and Promotion of bold design concept of the design for the success of that concept, deviated from the existing principle.

  • This paper aims to study whether the perspective of the character controlled by a player can affect the player on her moral decision. To this end we designed and developed Castaway, an interactive story using Unity3D game engine. The main story plot of Castaway is based on the trial 'R v Dudley and Stephens (also known as mignonette 1884) which occurred at 1884 in U.K. In Castaway, the player can choose either the accused or the victim, and then play the interactive story with the perspective of the chosen character. To investigate the relationship between the player's empathy to the player character and player's moral decision, we conducted a small-scale (n=10) pilot study. Results of the pilot study have shown that different perspectives can influence the player on her empathy to player character and her moral decision. In near future we plan to conduct a main study with more participants.

A Study on Character Design through Successful Cases of OSMU in Early Childhood Educational Contents (유아 교육 콘텐츠에서 OSMU 성공사례를 통한 캐릭터 디자인 연구)

  • Reflecting the current craze for early childhood education, the demand for learning contents has soared, kids content is emerging as a key topic of the contents industry. The industry developing digital content for young learners is called the 'angel industry', it is attracting a lot of attention because of the increased demand for early childhood education. This paper selects characters used in successful digital products to study character design for OSMU children's educational contents. Through advanced research, analysis criteria were prepared and analyzed to derive general success strategies for character design. As a result, common design features in the analyzed characters were found and confirmed the need for further research. Hopefully, this study will contribute to OSMU character design and lead to improved development of educational contents and commercialization of various characters.

  • Under the ambiguous situation that Id character design aim is not defined, this study would help designers with 1. overcoming the limitation of character form generation ability by establishing visual application system, 2. accepting users'opinions by generating character images dynamically, analysing and giving information on the preferred ones on the web on real time, 3. identifying tendency of preference so that they can generate preferred colors and images in future by updating image combination and dropping low-preferred ones. this system would play a role as an idea or character form generation application in the 3d character design development process

  • 최근 컴퓨터 게임의 확산과 함께 보다 나은 가상환경 생성을 위한 기술에 대한 필요성이 증가하고 있다 다양한 환경에서 지능적으로 행동하는 인공 캐릭터의 설계를 위해 다양한 인공지능 기술이 적용되고 있다. 하지만 게임의 캐릭터 설계에 적용된 휴리스틱이나 규칙기반 시스템 등의 기존 인공지능 기술은 게임 개발자에 의존적이기 때문에 플레이어가 쉽게 캐릭터의 행동패턴을 파악하여 게임의 흥미를 저하시키는 단점이 있다 따라서 진화연산이나 신경망 등의 학습기반 인공지능 기술의 게임에의 적용이 모색되고 있다 특히 진화를 이용한 지능기술은 자연계의 복잡성과 의외성을 모방하여 최적화된 지능보다는 속임수/의외성 등의 창의적인 지능행동의 생성을 가능하게 하며 새로운 게임전략의 생성, 게임 캐릭터의 성격형성 및 다양한 행동 생성 등에 매우 유용하다. 본 논문에서는 진화기술의 게임에의 효과적인 적용을 위해 진화엔진을 설계 및 제작하고 인공지능 시뮬레이터에 적용하여 그 유용성을 확인하였다.
