  • Purpose: The kappa angles of human eye were measured by photographs. The relationship between the dominant eye and far refractivity is studied. Methods: 112 adults participated in this study. The mean age was $22.54{\pm}5.90$ years. The kappa angles were measured by the deviation of the flash image in the photographs of eye. the dominant eye and the far refractivity were analyzed. Results: The distributions of kappa angles were 78.6% (176 eyes) in the positive angle, 15.2% (34 eyes) in the negative angle, and 6.2% (14 eyes) in the $0^{\circ}$. The kappa angles were $4.50{\pm}4.70^{\circ}$ for the dominant eye, $4.93{\pm}4.34^{\circ}$ for the non-dominant eye, $+6.00{\pm}2.22^{\circ}$ for the hypermetropia, $4.91{\pm}4.97^{\circ}$ for the emmetropia, and $+4.61{\pm}4.49^{\circ}$ for the myopia. The biggest kappa angles was odserved in the hypermetropia and the angles was getting smaller in the emmetropia, and the myopia. Conclusions: The kappa angle of the dominant eye was smaller than non-dominant eye. The kappa angle was smaller as the far refractivity is lower. The kappa angle can be directly measured by the photographic method.

  • Objectives: Carotid intima-media thickness (CIMT) and the presence of carotid artery plaque are widely used as preclinical markers of atherosclerosis. Due to operator dependency in measuring CIMT, it is important to evaluate the reliability of measuring CIMT and plaque between centers in a multicenter study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the inter-rater reliability of CIMT and plaque presence among three clinical centers of the Cardiovascular and Metabolic Disease Etiology Research Center (CMERC). Methods: Twenty people without known cardiovascular disease (age 37-64) were enrolled during 2014-2015, and their left and right carotid arteries were examined repeatedly with ultrasonography for CIMT measurements at three clinical centers according to a predetermined protocol. Maximum and mean values of CIMT at distal common carotid artery were recorded. Plaque presence at a carotid artery was checked by an operator. The reliability of CIMT and carotid plaque presence was assessed using an intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) and kappa statistics, respectively. Results: Calculated ICC was 0.647 (95% CI: 0.487-0.779) for maximum CIMT, and 0.758 (95% CI: 0.632- 0.854) for mean CIMT. In Bland Altman plot, most observed values were distributed within mean difference ${\pm}1.96$ SD ranges. Kappa statistics of plaque presence between two centers were 0.304 (center 1 and 2), 0.507 (center 1 and 3), and 0.606 (center 2 and 3), respectively, while Fleiss kappa for overall agreement was 0.445. Conclusions: The inter-rater reliability of CIMT measurements among three clinical centers turned out to be high, and the agreement of measuring carotid plaque presence was fair.

  • A new digital change detection algorithm, Euclidean Distance Analysis, was developed in an attempt to utilize the multi-band information in a selected band-comination, as an alternative to the conventional single-band analysis methods. To evaluate the relative performance of this new method, image differencing was applied. The better performance in change detection between the two algorithms investigated was provided by the Euclidean distance analysis. The new technique of Euclidean distance analysis holds promise for change detection, since it summarizes the multiple-band information on the cover-type changes and reduces the data dimensionality. It is suggested to further evaluate this new method, quantitatively, in the different environments. The use of different accuracy indices was also examined in the determining the optimal threshold level for each change image. As the standard measure for classification accuracy, the Kappa coefficient of agreement was used for evaluation.

  • This study investigated the land-cover changes in the tidal flat of the Taean peninsula due to man-made environmental changes between 1972 and 2008, through time-series analysis based on a modified post-classification comparison method and multi-temporal satellite images. The analysis revealed that the land-cover of the tidal flat has changed from tidal flat to wetland and from wetland to paddy field between 1972 and 2008. Also, the pattern of detailed land-cover changes is as follows: tidal flat to wetland; lake and saltpan to bare land and paddy field. The accurate classification of each image is needed for the application of the post-classification comparison method. The overall accuracy of the classified images was found to be 95.33% on average, and the Kappa value was 0.941 on average.

  • The constitution of traditional medicine is distinguished from modern medicine. Sasang medicine describe the constitution which is classified as functional intensity of the lung, spleen, liver and kidney. The functional strength of each part of the human body is not the same in each constitution, and this imbalance is considered as a major factor of the disease. Ayurveda is identified the balance of the three dosha in our body is the basis of health maintenance. The reason for the illness is due to the imbalance among vata which express energy metabolism, pitta which plays a role in metabolism and digestion, and kapha which controls body temperature. The two theories which include knowing the characteristics and trends of diseases according to their constitution, the approach of treatment and the health care of daily life. They are also considered as convergent area about treatment methods in the modern society where individual characteristics and lifestyle are emphasized. The purpose of this study is to understand the concept of constitutional basis for increasing patient satisfaction and to help diversity of treatment in preventive medical area by comparing and analyzing the theory of Sasang and Ayurveda.

  • This study investigated the development of a Korean version of the Ayurvedic constitution questionnaire and sought to verify its validity and reliability. Each study subject completed a self-administered questionnaire consisting of 63 questions. The Ayurvedic constitutions were placed into 7 categories. The results from 271 subjects revealed that the internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's ${\alpha}$) in the 41 item biometric signature part of the questionnaire was 0.757. The Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the 22 item psychological part was 0.616, whereas the Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ for the entire 63 items was 0.840. Taken together, the results indicate that the Korean version of the Ayurvedic questionnaire was valid. Within the questionnaire, the fourth item about body and the ninth item about psychological showed item-total correlations with negative total values, thereby indicating inconsistent (less reliable) responses. The remaining 61 items had a 0.864 degree of reliability. The results for the pure Vata Pitta and Kapha body types showed a high level of internal consistency reliability, presumably because those participants were of a pure constitution type. The Kappa factor for inter-item coincidence between the judgment of Ayurvedic constitution experts and the judgment derived from the written test scores was 0.619, thereby indicating questionnaire validity. The results of this study may be useful in further development of a Korean version of the Ayurveda constitution questionnaire.
