  • The characteristics of phosphate adsorption-desorption on kaolinite was studied by batch adsorption experiments and detailed adsorbed state of phosphate on kaolinite surface was investigated using ATR-FTIR (Attenuated Total Reflectance-Fourier Transform Infrared) spectroscopy. The phosphorous contents were measured using UV-VIS-IR spectrophotometer with 820 nm wavelength. The adsorbed P was generally increased with increasing pH value in the range of pH 4 to pH 9, however it is not distinct. Moreover the adsorbed P was significantly changed with different initial phosphate concentration. The adsorption isotherms were well fitted with the Langmuir equation, Temkin equation, and Freundlich equation in descending order. The maximum Langmuir adsorption capacity of kaolinite KGa-2 is 232.5 ($204.1{\sim}256.5$) mg/kg and has very higher value than that of kaolinite KGa-1b. Most of adsorbed phosphate on kaolinite were not easily desorbed to aqueous solution, but might fixed on kaolinite surface. However it needs further research about the exact desorption experiment. It was impossible to recognize phosphorous adsorption bands on kaolinite in ATR-FTIR spectrum from kaolinite bands themselves, because the absorption peaks of phosphorous have very similar positions with those of kaolinite, and the intensities of the former were very weak in comparison with those of the latter.

  • $TiO_2$ coatings on kaolinite powders by sol-gel method were carried out using mixture of titanium isopropoxide, ethanol as solvent, HCl as a catalyst and $H_{2}O$ for hydrolysis. The mole ratio of reaction mixture, stirring time. aging time, crystallization time and crystallization temperature influenced to the crystallization of $TiO_2$ coated on kaolinite and metakaolinite Powders. Optimum condition for $TiO_2$ coatings on kaolinite was as follows; TIP 0.1 mol, $H_{2}O$ 0.15 mol, HCl 0.005 mol, ethanol 100 ml, raw kaolinite 50 g, stirring time 4 hrs, aging time 24 hrs, crystallization time 2 hrs and crystallization temperature $1050^{\circ}C$. The crystallinity of the anatase under optimum condition was about 17.61%. The anatase crystallinity of the $TiO_2$ coated on raw kaolinitc powders (17.61% at $1050^{\circ}C$) was higher at the lower calcination temperature compared with metakaolinite (17.39% at $1200^{\circ}C$).

  • The laboratory adsorption batch tests were performed to investigate the adsorption characteristics of Pb on kaolinite. The characteristics such as adsorption equilibrium time, adsorption capacity, adsorption isotherm were studied, and also the effects of pH and the mixing ratio on the adsorption of Pb on kaolinite were investigated. Test results show that the adsorption equilibrium state was reached within 24 hours, and the adsorbed amount of Pb increased, but the adsorption efficiency over the initial concentration of 198 mg/l decreased, with increasing the initial concentration of Pb. And the adsorption constant, 1/n was obtained 0.9584 by Freundlich isotherm equation. Regardless of the initial concentration of Pb. the adsorbed amount of Pb as well as the adsorption efficiency were increased with increasing pH values and converged to a certain constant value above 8 of pH values. And also the adsorbed amount of Pb increased with the mixing ratio, but its efficiency increased with the mixing ratio up to 8 and then showed the decreasing tendency above that.

  • In this study, the adsorption reactions in the binary component system such as kaolinite-humic acid, kaolinite-americium and humic acid-americium were investigated. After performing the basic physico-chemical properties of the kaolinite, the adsorption reactions of the humic acid on the kaolinite were carried out with varying concentration of humic acid and ion strength, and pH. With increasing HA concentration and pH, the sorption of HA onto KA decreased, while the sorption of HA onto KA increased with increasing ionic stre ngth. Also, with varying pH, the adsorption reactions of the americium-kaolinite and americium-humic acid were studied. In the acid and neutral region, Am easily adsorbed on the HA, while the sorption of Am on the HA in the alkali region decreased because of electrostatic repulsion. The results from these studies make it possible to understand the characteristics of adsorption behaviour of the americium by the humic acid in the water environment.

  • This study aims to investigate the settling velocity of aggregates of cohesive sediment (floc) and its relationship with sediment size, density and fractal dimension. A system of commercial camera and macro-lens is used for the experiment. Through the image-analysis technique, the image taken by the camera system is analyzed. For the experiment, kaolinite and a natural sediment sampled at Lake Apopka in Florida have been tested. From this study, it is known that kaolinite and Lake Apopka sediments show different behaviors mainly depending on the organic matter content. Samples of kaolinite with less organic contents show a more definite trend to follow a fractal theory and relatively strong relationships between the settling velocity, density, fractal dimension and floc size compared to the Lake Apopka sediments rich in organics.

  • This study analyzed the spectral reflectance characteristics of kaolinite and ASTER(Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflectance Radiometer) image to extract the distribution of kaolin mines in Hadong area, Gyeongsangnam-do. The band ratio model was applied to extract kaolinite using difference of wavelength absorption band distinct feature of minerals from ASTER image which is the major mineral of kaolin mines. According to the spectral reflectance curve of kaolinite, it showed the absorption features around 0.96 and $2.18{\mu}m$ by Al-OH. Also, it affected 1.24 and $1.38{\sim}1.41{\mu}m$ by OH. Applying for new band ratio model from the spectral features of kaolinite to ASTER image, it is possible to make the distribution map of mining traces including present- developing kaolin mines.

  • An experimental study was carried out on kaolinite-sand mixtures with various proportions of kaolinite content. To investigate physical behaviour of mixtures, index properties and compaction test results were analysed in various aspects. Moreover, to clearly see the interaction between kaolinite and sand particles, the observational analysis through microscopic image analysis device was conducted. The test results showed that an increase in the amount of kaolinite could create a strong bonding structure which resulted in higher specific surface available for activities of kaolinite particles. Also, an increase in the amount of the kaolinite resulted in an increase in the percentage of water sorption. Then it could accelerate the occupation rate of water which tended to take up the space that would have been occupied by solid particles, and accordingly, resulted in the decreased maximum dry unit weight and increased initial void ratio. Based on the microscopic image analysis, the samples were individually classified into three types of mixture such as sand dominant, intermediate fine content, and fine dominant. In addition, the fine and coarse grains seem to interact well in the mixtures with the fine content ranging from 25 to 40%.

  • Kaolinite was synthesized through th acid treatment of mixture which consisted of psudoboehmite and colloidal silica in hydrothermal reaction at $213^{\circ}C$ under autogeneous vapor pressure. Crystallization process was characterized by X-ray powder diffraction pattern, IR spectra and Hinckley index was calculated. The synthesis in acidic solution promotes the dissolution of the starting materials and leads to crystallization of kaolinite. The rate of crystallization to kaolinite and stacking defect were found to e affected by kind of anion, acidity and starting materials.
