  • The effects of the particle size and the structure of carbon blacks on the friction and the wear behavior of filled natural rubber were investigated in this study. The particle size and the structure of carbon black had a significant effect on the wear rates and the worn surface pattern, and the effect of them on abrasion resistance should be considered for the optimum design of desired wear properties. Ten carbon blacks with various sizes and structures are mixed with natural rubber in order to investigate the effects on the wear rate ($W_R$). The friction and the wear behavior were examined by self-made blade type friction-wear abrader, and the ,elation with characteristic parameter (${\psi}=\sqrt{{N_2^2}+{DBP^2}}$), obtained from the particle size and the structure, was studied. The wear rate ($W_R$) had a Power Law relation with the frictional work ($W_f$) and it was inversely proportional to the characteristic parameter of carbon black. It means that smaller particle size and better structure development of carbon black resulted in improved abrasion resistance.

  • Impurities removal from waste carbon black was carried out to produce high-grade carbon black. A large amount of hydrophilic carbon black is produced as a byproduct of the hydrogen production process by flame decomposition of water. Due to its impurities content such as sulphur, iron, ash, etc., it can only be used as low-grade carbon or burnt out. High-grade hydrophilic carbon black is 3~5 times more expensive than oil-based carbon black because of high production cost associated with process complexly and pollutant treatment. Hydrophilic carbon is normally used for conductive materials for batteries, pigment for plastics, electric wire covering, additives for rubber, etc. In these applications, impurity content must be blow 1 fe. In this study, magnetic separation, froth flotation and ultrasonic treatment were employed to remove impurities from the low-grade hydrophilic carbon black. Results showed that the ash, iron and sulphur content of product decreased to less than 0.01 wt.%, 0.01 wt.% and 0.3 wt % respectively and the surface area of product was about 930 $m^2$/g for conductive materials.

  • The number of waste tires is increasing. One effective recycling method is the pyrolysis of waste tires. Using the pyrolyzed carbon black from waste tires, the characteristics of permanent deformation for PA-13mm porous mixture were evaluated. The confining pressure of 138 kPa and deviatoric stress of 551 kPa were adopted. The testing temperature was $45^{\circ}$ and 50 gyrations of the gyratory compactor was used to simulate the medium traffic level. The mixture modified by 10% PCB showed the largest Marshall Stability of 3.41 kN. The stability of the mixtures with PCB was 50% higher than that of mixture without PCB. The limited laboratory test showed that the use of PCB in a porous pavement decreases the permanent deformation and will be an effective alternative method to reducing the permanent deformation of a porous pavement.
