  • Electrical characteristics of crystalline polymer composites filled with nano-sized carbon black particle were studied. The developed composite system exhibited a typical positive temperature coefficient resistance (PTCR) characteristic, where the electrical resistance sharply increased at a specific temperature. The PTCR effect was sometimes followed by a negative temperature coefficient resistance (NTCR) feature with temperature, which seemingly caused by the coagulation of nano-sized carbon black particles in the excessive quantity. The PTCR temperature was controlled by the carbon black content and the external voltage. The change of electric conductivity was shown as a function of carbon black content, and the resistance was constant when the carbon black content was over 20 wt%. The room-temperature resistance was maintained by a repeated heating and cooling. The excellent PTCR characteristic was demonstrated by the low resistance in the initial stage and the instantaneous heating capability.

  • Maleic anhydride (MA) modified ethylene-propylene-diene terpolymer (MEPDM) was pre-pared from solution polymerization. MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was prepared by melt polymerization of male ate d EPDM and quaternary ammonium silyl polydimethylsiloxane -7,7,8,8- tetracyanoquinodimethane (TCNQ) adduct (PST) in internal mixer and MEPDM-g-PST/HDPE/CB (MPEC) was prepared by com-pounding HDPE, MEPDM-g-PST copolymer and carbon black (CB, 5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), and HDPE/ CB (PEC) by compounding HDPE and CB (5, 10, 15, and 20 phr), respectively. The structure of MEPDM-g-PST copolymer was confirmed by measuring the FTIR. The maximum grafting ratio of MA onto EPDM was 2.35%. The thermal and mechanical properties of the composites were measured and dispersion characteristics of CB in matrix show that CB in MPEC was better dispersed than that in PEC composite.

  • In this work, the effect of chemical treatments on the carbon blacks as-received has been studied in the context of surface, adsorption, microstructure properties, and physical surface free energetics. As an experimental result, the basic chemical treatment leads to an increase in the either dispersive or specific component without significant change the pH and specific surface area. While, acidic chemical treatment do significantly change the surface and adsorption properties, and microstructures of the carbon blacks. In particular, the result given by basic chemical treatment shows an increase of the London dispersive component of the surface free energy which is a major parameter in evaluating the dispersion or specific surface area of the carbon blacks studied. This is probably a major role in evaluating the dispersion the carbon blacks, which are reinforced in elastomer matrix in a composite system.

  • In this study, analyzed of changes resulting from the spread of carbon black in casein grafted water dispersed polyurethane using PPG. For this purpose, casein-grafted water-dispersed polyurethane and (PUD and CPUD's) samples were prepared and samples of CPCB's dispersed with carbon black were prepared. As a result of measuring the tensile strength using prepared samples, the tensile strength was increased to $3.01kgf/mm^2$ with CPUD3, which contains highly casein, in CPCB's tensile strength was measured as low as $2.54kgf/mm^2$ with increasing carbon black. Elongation was measured in 278% of PUD samples containing less casein, and CP3CB4 in CPCB's was measured as 157%. The abrasion resistance of the samples was 36.97 mg.loss for CPUD3 and 41.11 mg.loss for CP3CB4. The solvent resistance of the PUD 's sample and the CPCB' s sample were not changed.

  • The purpose of this experiment was the physical properties of rubber compounds with DPCB and pure carbon black. Si-O peak in the silcia surface was observed at the range of wavenumber from 1,100 to 1,200 in the DPCB by FT-IR analysis. Cure rate of rubber compounds containing DPCB and organic silane coupling agent were (Si69) delayed compared with those containing pure carbon black. 300% modulus and interaction coefficient of DPCB with silane coupling agent were higher than those of pure carbon black and PICO weight loss amount showed constant value. It was found that $0^{\circ}C$ tan$\delta$ of rubber compounds with DPCB was larger than those of pure carbon black at 2.0% silane coupling agent based on 50 phr DPCB and $60^{\circ}C$ tan$\delta$ of rubber compounds with DPCB decreased as increasing the usage coupling agent. Consequently, it is postulated that DPCB is strong candidate material for lowering rolling resistance under constant abrasion resistance.

  • The positive temperature coefficient (PTC) characteristics of polymer composites were investigated with the nano-sized carbon black particles using solution tasting and melt compounding methods. The polymeric PTC composites should the electrical threshold at 35 wt% for the melt compounding method and 40 wt% for the solution casting method. The ethylene vinylacetate copolymer (EVA) composite showed a gradual increase of resistance as a function of temperature and showed a maximum at the polymer molting point. The resistance of the high-density polythylene (HDPE) composite remains unchanged with temperature but started to Increase sharply near the melting point of HDPE and showed a maximum resistance at the melting point of HDPE. The dispersion of nano-sized carbon black particles was investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and low resistance after electrical threshold, and both methods exhibited a well dispersed morphology. When the electric current was applied to the PTC composites, the resistance started increasing at the curie temperature and further increased until the trip temperature was roached. Then the resistance remained stable over the trip temperature. The secondary increase started at T$\sub$m/ of matrix polymer and kept increasing up to the trip temperature.

  • This paper presents a study on the permittivities of the carbon black/epoxy composite at microwave frequency. The measurements were performed at the frequency band of $1\;GHz\~18\;GHz$. The experimental data show that the complex permittivities of composites depend strongly on the natures and concentrations of the carbon black dispersion. The frequency characteristics of dielectric constants and ac conductivities of composites show the good conformity with descriptions of the percolation theory, satisfying the general scaling relation. The measuring frequency band is over the critical frequency, below that the ac conductivities of composites are constant to the frequency. The values of dielectric constants and ac conductivities have consistent relationships with the carbon black concentration. The A new scheme, that is a branch of Lichtenecker-Rother formula, is proposed to obtain a mixing law to describe the complex permittivities of the composites as function frequency and concentration of carbon black.

  • Silica-filled rubber compound needs longer mixing time compared to carbon black-filled one since it has poor dispersion or the filler. Influence of the mixing procedure on the properties of natural rubber compound filled with both silica and carbon black was studied. The discharge temperature of the master batch (MB) mixing was $150^{\circ}C$. The mixing time was longer when silica and carbon black were loaded separately than when loaded simultaneously. The mixing time was longer when silica was loaded first than when carbon black is loaded first. The compounds prepared by one MB step (conventional mixing) were compared with the compounds prepared by two MB steps (two-step mixing). Scorch times of the two-step mixing compounds were longer than those by the conventional mixing ones. Bound rubber contents of the formers were lower than those of the tatters. The two-step mixing vulcanizates had longer elongation at break, higher tensile strength, and better fatigue life.
