  • Objectives : This study was performed to evaluate the clinical effect of acupuncture on microtraumatic injuries of the knee joint. Methods : Among the outpatients with knee joint pain who visited to Department of Acupuncture & Moxibustion, National Medical Center from February 2000 to September 2000, we selected 15 cases that showed normal finding in both X-ray and neurological examination, and that were categorized into microtraumatic injuries by the physical examination based on the Cyriax's orthopedic medicine. During acupuncture therapy, the patients were ordered to move involved side actively. The effect was assessed through questionnaires of CNRS(Cincinnati Knee Rating System). Results : We investigated 11 female and 4 male patients. The most common distribution of age was 30's(40%). The most commom duration of symtoms was from 3 to 5 months(40%). The most common microtraumatic injury was pes anserinus bursitis(33.3%), and followed by iliotibial band friction syndrome(20%), and patellar tendinitis(20%). In the CNRS, the mean number of before treatment was 60.6 and after was 66.5. 10 cases among the 15 patients were improved(66.6%). Conclusions : These results suggest that the acupuncture therapy combined with active movements of involved side was effective treatment modality on microtraumatic injuries of the knee joint.

  • The aim of this study is to collect and analyze clinical studies on acupuncture therapies of Post-stroke depression, and to suggest a method on study about acupuncture therapies. In this thesis, electronic searches were performed. Also, 6 major journals associated with oriental medicine in Korea were searched manually. Through searching, 27 studies were selected and analyzed. There were 24 controlled studies and 3 non-controlled studies. Treatment methods were acupuncture, electronic-acupuncture, eye-acupuncture, abdominal-acupuncture and pharmaco-puncture. The percentages of these treatment method were 59.2%, 29.6%, 3.7%, 3.7% and 3.7%, respectively. Acupuncture points such as GV20, PC6, ST36, SP6, LV3, GV24, GV26, LI14, LI11, H7, ST40, GB20, GB34 and LI15 were used. In comparison of results before and after acupuncture treatment, there were statistically significant improvement in 26 studies. Based on the results from above, the studies on acupuncture for Post-stroke depression needs to be standardized and more appropriate high-quality study models should be introduced.

  • Objectives : Contradictions for Oncology acupuncture were searched and reviewed to establish fundamentals for the appropriate contraindication guideline. Methods : In order to search contraindications for oncology acupuncture, domestic journals, books and online database of Pubmed were searched using the terms, cancer, tumor, acupuncture, safety, contraindications and guideline were below. Results : We found 7 papers and 1 book by the above methods. We reviewed and suggested the contraindications. Contraindications for oncology acupuncture are neutropenia (absolute neutrophil count : ANC less than $500/mm^3$), thrombocytopenia (platelets less than $50,000/mm^3$), anticoagulant use, spinal instability, tumour nodule, lymphedema, prosthesis, intracranial deficits, confused patients, significant arrhythmia, patient refusal to treatment, severe neurotic patients and intracardiac defribillator. Contraindications for using semi-permanent needles are neutropenia (ANC less than $500/mm^3$), splenectomy, valvular heart disease, B, C hepatitis and keloids. Conclusions : Acupuncture for cancer patients pose significant risks but these guidelines are proposed in the hopes of providing certain boundaries in practicing oncology acupuncture. A more systematic and rigorous research is needed to establish a more reliable oncology acupuncture guidelines.

  • Objectives: This study was conducted to investigate the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture therapy for pregnant women. Researches on acupuncture therapy for pregnant women published since 2000 until 2013 were selected and analyzed. Methods: Bibliographic search was carried out using several online database systems using keywords like 'pregnancy', 'pregnant', 'acupuncture', 'forbidden points' within a 13-year time span (2000-2013). Results: 18 journal articles published in Korea and 22 journal articles published abroad were selected. It is reported that acupuncture has significant effect on low back pain and pelvic pain, depression, insomnia during pregnancy. Stimulation of acupuncture during pregnancy seems to be safe with respect to obstetric adverse effects. Conclusions: We can conclude that further investigation is needed to accumulate enough information to establish evidence for acupuncture therapy for pregnant women.

Methods : From October 1st 2005 to May 31th 2006, 30 cases of low back pain patients at acute stage were divided into 2 groups; one group(control group) took near acupuncture point needling, and the other group(test group) took near acupuncture point needling with remote acupuncture point needling. For evaluating change of pain, Visual Analog Scale(VAS) was checked before and after Treatment. Results : Both acupuncture therapy showed good effect on low back pain of acute stage. And test group showed better effect on decreasing pain than control group. It was proved by the difference between VAS checked before treatment and what checked after treatment. But it was not significant statistically. Conclusion : Near acupuncture point needling and remote acupuncture point needling can be recommended as a useful therapy to treat low back pain of acute stage.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this report is to show that oriental medical treatments, chiefly using Sweet bee venom (SBV) are effective on symptom improvements and calcium removal in the patients diagnosed with calcific tendinitis in supraspinatus. Methods : We applied 0.3~0.6cc of SBV on $LI_{15}$ ($Gyeonu$) at a time and 0.1~0.2cc on each surrounding pressure point. In addition, we treated $Hwangryeonhaedok-tang$ pharmacopuncture on both acupoints of $GB_{21}$ ($Gyeonjeong$) with large intestine tonification of $Sa-Am$. Results : The symptoms improved within 3 weeks in case 1, 4 days in case 2, 5 weeks in case 3. The removal of calcium was detected by radiology at all cases. Conclusions : From the above results, it is considered that the oriental medical therapy including SBV is effective on the removal of calcium.
