  • Extracting hand region from images is the first part in the process to recognize hand posture and gesture interaction. Therefore, a good segmenting method is important because it determines the overall performance of hand recognition systems. Conventional hand segmentation researches were prone to changing illumination conditions or limited to the ability to detect multiple people. In this paper, we propose a robust technique based on the fusion of skin-color data and depth information for hand segmentation process. The proposed algorithm uses skin-color data to localize accurate seed location for region-growing from a complicated background. Based on the seed location, our algorithm adjusts each detected blob to fill up the hole region. A region-growing algorithm is applied to the adjusted blob boundary at the detected depth image to obtain a robust hand region against illumination effects. Also, the resulting hand region is used to train our skin-model adaptively which further reduces the effects of changing illumination. We conducted experiments to compare our results with conventional techniques which validates the robustness of the proposed algorithm and in addition we show our method works well even in a counter light condition.

  • This paper aims to detect Speed Bump by using Omni-directional Camera and to suggest Real-time update scheme of Speed Bump through Vision Based Approach. In order to detect Speed Bump from sequence of camera images, noise should be removed as well as spot estimated as shape and pattern for speed bump should be detected first. Now that speed bump has a regular form of white and yellow area, we extracted speed bump on the road by applying erosion and dilation morphological operations and by using the HSV color model. By collecting huge panoramic images from the camera, we are able to detect the target object and to calculate the distance through GPS log data. Last but not least, we evaluated accuracy of obtained result and detection algorithm by implementing SLAMS (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping system).

  • Several numerical models for predicting beach profile changes have been developed by many researchers. Many of the earlier models are known to simulate the erosional profiles with the formation of offshore bar. However, most of the models don't have proper mechanism to incorporate the recovery process of the eroded profiles after a storm and can not simulate the beach accretion with acceptable accuracy. In order to overcome these shortcomings, we propose a new numerical model which has new features to simulate the accretional phase of beach recovery process after storm including such as redistribution of suspended sand particles near the breaking point. The simulation results of the proposed model were compared with LWT (Large Wave Tank) experiments performed at CRIEPI (Central Research Institute of Electric Power Industry in Japan) and CE (the Us Army Corps of Engineers) and it was shown to have performed better compared to SBEACH (Storm-induced BEAch CHange).

  • Simulation modeling was applied to predict the response of northeast Florida coastal wetlands to futrue sea levl rise due to global warming. Remote sensing and geographic information systems (GLS) were used to develop, manipulate, and synthesize input data, including land cover, digital elevation data, and site characteristics data. The SLAMM3 model evaluated this input data to predict responses of coastal wetlands and lowlands to inundation and erosion by sea level rise, and determined transfers from one habitat to another on a cell-by-cell basis. Significant changes were predicted from different scenarios of sea level rise: 0.5m, 1.0m, and 1.25m. The simulations indicated that 31.9 percent and 40.0 percent of wetlands within the study area would be lost with 1.0m and 1.25m sea level rise respectively, and a 6.5 percent loss with 0.5m rise.

  • This study applied SWAT model to analyze suspended sediment load that is influence on the high density turbid water in Donghyang and Cheoncheon basin, which are located in the upstream of Yongdam Dam. GIS data such as DEM, land cover map and soil map, and meteorological data were used as the input data of SWAT model. And the rating curve equation and Q-SS equation of Donghyang and Cheoncheon gauge station were applied as the measured values of them. As the result of flowout, the coefficient of determination ($R^2$) and the Nash-Sutcliffe coefficient of efficiency (EI) of model calibration showed high as 0.87 and 0.87 at Donghyang gauge station, and the $R^2$ and EI of model validation were high as 0.95 at Cheoncheon gauge station. Also, as the result of suspended sediment load, the $R^2$ and EI of model calibration were high as 0.77 and 0.76 at Donghyang gauge station, and the $R^2$ and EI of model validation marked high as 0.867 and 0.80 at Cheoncheon gauge station. It is considered that the suspended sediment load of 2003 showed the highest due to rainfall amounts and rainfall intensity in using SWAT model. The results of suspended sediment modeled in this study can be applied to the decision-making support data for the evaluation of soil erosion possibility and turbid water potential in the management of reservoir.

  • Soil depth results from bedrock weathering, erosion, transport, and deposition are critical in landslide stability analysis and sediment-related disasters. This study proposes a soil depth prediction model for mountainous regions using multiple linear regression analysis based on topographic attributes. The specific catchment area (SCA), a key indicator in multiple regression models, was initially developed as a hydrological parameter for runoff estimation. However, for soil depth prediction, the initial triggering volume must be adjusted to account for slope failures based on the topographic slope. The SCA is calculated using the infinite flow direction model for flow tracing and the priority-flood algorithm for depression flattening. In addition, a modified contributing area equation is derived by incorporating slope-dependent initial triggering volume adjustments, thereby enabling the calculation of an improved SCA that is applicable to large mountainous regions. Analyses conducted in the Umyeonsan and Dongjak-gu areas of Seoul reveals that slope, topographic wetness index, and sediment transport index are suitable independent variables for soil depth prediction. The soil depth prediction equation derived from the multiple linear regression model exhibits no multicollinearity issues and demonstrates statistical significance. Residual analysis confirms that the assumptions of normality and homoscedasticity are satisfied. The proposed soil depth prediction method is expected to be systematically applied to various regions in South Korea, thereby contributing to the development of a nationwide soil depth distribution map and supporting practical solutions for various issues, e.g., slope stability assessments in mountainous areas.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the sediment volume concentration of the liquified-solid mixture which is included fine sediment fractions, according to the variance of the channel slope and the water supply. The numerical model was performed by using the Finite Differential Element Method (FDM) based on the equation for the mass conservation, momentum conservation and the equation of coarse sediment an fine sediment. In comparison of varying the channel slope, the deeper the channel slope, the inflection point of the sediment concentration was occurred rapidly. In comparison of variance of the water supply, as the water supply increases fluctuation with high sediment concentration. In this situation, debris flow changes to the turbulent flow and the sediment becomes to be floated. In comparison varying the length paved saturated sediment, the longer the length, the high concentration of sediment occurred, for the safety of the slope it is needed to check the possibility of the erosion in the slope by debris flow. The results of this study will provide useful information in predicting of the disaster by the liquified-solid mixture and in prevention of the debris flow with various the slope in the mountain side.

  • In recent years, the rate of mean sea level rise is increasing rapidly from the phenomena of global warming, together with the increasing trend of the storm scale. The issue of sea level rise is multifaceted and produces a range of environmental problems. Especially, high tides and the tidal currents become higher, and wave base increases, so the energy received at the coastal boundary may increase. This brings that many coastal environments go into disequilibrium, such as damages to the structures, erosion, and deposition Similarly it was known that the problems of nearshore processes and damage of berth and counter facilities during storm period had appeared at the small fishery port. Here we try to analyze the impact of the rearrangement of counter facilities and berth layout adopted for tranquility of its'inner harbor. Because this harbor is being connected to channel and open sea, the rearrangement of the structures might affect to the current speed and direction and wave height, so do to the sea bottom undulation. Therefore, we made model test for the several layouts of the berth and breakwater in this area.
