  • The properties of AlN made by carbothermal reaction depend on the starting materials, quantity of liquid, the liquid-vapor phase reaction, the N$_2$ flow rate, and the reaction temperature. AlN whisker was synthesized by the VLS and VS methods. Solid ${\alpha}$-A1$_2$O$_3$(AES-11) was carbothermally reduced with carbon black in a high-purity N$_2$ atmosphere with AlF$_3$ to cause whisker grown and additional aluminum liquid to increase whisker yield. Aluminum nitride was perfectly formed at reaction temperatures of 1600$^{\circ}C$. At reaction temperature higher than 1600$^{\circ}C$ the aluminum nitride was completely formed, while the composition remains unaffected. Needle-shaped whiskers formed best at 1600$^{\circ}C$ while higher temperatures disrupted whisker formation. Adding 0 to 15 wt% aluminum to the synthesis favorably affects the microstructure for formation of needle-shaped AlN whisker. Additions over 15 wt% degraded formation of AlN whisker.

  • Electron microscopy of the tremolite-actinolite series amphiboles from the naturally occurring asbestos locality showed the morphological diversity including fibrous, acicular, and prismatic. Very thin, long, and flexible fibers of constant width form ropy bundles or mats. Acicular particles are slightly thick, long, elastic, and easily separated from the bundle of parallel rods. Acicular fragments of lower aspect ratio are formed during the crushing of the amphibole prism. Morphological features of the amphiboles are different depending on their localities and vary in a specimen. Morphological continuum between amphibole fiber and prism requires the establishment of reliable identification criterions and sample preparation protocol based on the relation between carcinogenicity and morphological features.

  • Acicular Fe-Co alloy particles are one of the candidates for high-density magnetic recording media. We examined the effects of Co additions on the magnetic properties of Fe-Co alloy particles by using M$\'{o}$ssbauer spectroscopy, TEM, and X-ray diffraction. Acicular $Fe_n$Co (n=5, 4, 3, 2) alloy particles coated with silica, were prepared by a chemical coprecipitation method and subsequent H $_2$ reduction. The crystal structure was found to be cubic in all n ranges. The lattice constant $a_0$ decreases with increasing Co contents. Analysis of $^{57}Fe$ M\'{o}$ssbauer effect data in terms of the local configurations of Co atoms has permitted the influence of magnetic hyperfine interactions to be monitored.

  • This study was conducted to examine the growth and physiological characteristics of Polystichum lepidocaulon native fern as affected by soil mixture as an environment modeled on habitate where was sunken-condition. 1. Polystichum lepidocaulon grew well sunken more than non-sunken condition. Under soil mixture of field soil : sand : leaf mold, Plant height, frond width, frond length, stipe length and ornamental value were increased compared with the other soil mixture. 2. Fresh and dry weight of fronds were higher with non-sunken than sunken condition. In sunken condition, fresh and dry weight were better with field soil : sand : leaf mold than the other soil mixture. 3. Number of spore fronds were increased with sunken condition. As sunken condition, sand : leaf mold was better than field soil : sand : leaf mold or leaf mold. 4. Photosynthetic rate, $CO_2$ absorption rate and water efficiency were higher with field soil : sand : leaf mold than that of sand : leaf mold or leaf mold. expect of stomatal conduction and $CO_2$ use efficiency.
