Purpose: This study examined the efficiency and wear of periodontal instrument sharpening using aluminum oxide stones with different levels of roughness. Materials and Methods: Thirty new No. 9-10 Gracey curets were used in this study. All curets had become dull after scaling and root planing. After similar blunting, the instruments were divided randomly into three groups (240, 600, 800 grit) containing 10 curets each. The stones were applied correctly to the lateral surface of each curet to maintain the $70-80^{\circ}$ angle. After resharpening, sharpness of the curets was examined by an optical microscope. After 20, 40, 60, and 80 strokes, the wear was measured at 1 mm and 2 mm from the tip of the cutting edge using a digital caliper. The data was analyzed statistically using analysis of variance (ANOVA) with repeated measures, 2-way ANOVA, and a Fisher's exact test. Results: The degree of sharpness increased significantly (P < 0.001) as the number of sharpening strokes grew for all stones. A comparison of the degree of sharpness on the same number of strokes showed that the 240 grit group significantly excelled the other groups on 5 and 10 strokes, respectively (P < 0.001). The mean wear showed no statistically significant difference among the groups (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The efficiency of Gracey curet resharpening was enhanced with more coarse stones, though we should consider the wear of the instrument during resharpening.
The aim of this study was to evaluation the association between obesity and periodontitis according to the characteristics of subjects. The subjects of this study was 429 subjects aged 19 years or older from March to May, 2010. Data were analyzed with chi-square test, Multivariable logistic regression and Statistics were analyzed linear regression analysis using SPSS 18.0. WHR had dose-effect relationship with the number of sextants with periodontitis. With regard to relationships between obesity type and periodontitis depending on characteristics of objects, the WHR obesity group showed results higher than the normal group, for twice(OR: 2.24; 95% CI: 1.17-4.28) and three times or more(OR: 3.34; 95% CI: 1.53-7.27) in frequency of daily teeth brushing, 0-3 points(OR: 2.47; 95% CI: 1.09-5.59) and 4-6 points(OR: 3.99; 95% CI: 1.75-9.08) in the self-perception of stress level, and the group with 8 hours or more(OR: 4.20; 95% CI: 2.11-8.34) in the sleeping time. If anyone is judged to have obesity by WHR, we can say that the risk to have periodontitis together with it is 2.56 times more likely(95% CI: 1.58-4.13).
The purpose of this study was to provide basic data for healthy and effective dental management by providing the knowledge and information on periodontal health promotion as well as high dental health interests, by doing a comparative analysis of the effect of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills of people in their 20s on periodontal health status assessment, to find periodontal disease early and prevent it targeting 130 adults in their 20s who visited dental hygienic lab for comprehensive dental hygiene care and treatment from September 25 to October 30. The data collected used SPSS 18.0. To present the technical characteristics of the data, frequency was used and chi-squared test through cross-analysis was conducted to investigate dental health knowledge and the relevance between the variables of oral hygiene management skills of general characteristics. To examine periodontal health status assessment, t-test and One-way ANOVA and Turkey post-hoc tests were carried out at the 5% significance level. Regression analysis was performed to investigate the impact of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills on dental health status assessment. As a result of this study, as dental health knowledge on tooth brushing of people in their 20s increased, plaque index reduced, as dental health knowledge on periodontal disease increased, plaque index reduced. Dental health status assessment according to a total number of times tooth brushing, tooth brushing methods, whether to use dental hygiene devices, smoking status, drinking frequency per week, whether to have oral health education was statistically significant. To improve the level of dental health knowledge and oral hygiene management skills, oral health education should be strengthened as well as the publicity through the media to have the information on oral health and learn it.
This study was carried out in order to offer basic data available for being helpful to promoting periodontal health, by analyzing effects in socio-demographical and health-behavior characteristics on index of evaluating periodontal status. The study conducted a survey for the 151 adults aged 30 to 59 from October. 1, 2006 to March. 30, in 2007. The collected data were analyzed with t-test and one-way of variance using SPSS 12.0. Then, the following result were obtain. 1. sociodemographic and health-behavior characteristics is not related to O'Leary plaque index, Loe & Silness gingival index. 2. The number of sextants possessing periodontal pocket was higher in men(3.34) than women(2.43), also statistically significant difference in the occupational fields. Smoker(3.38) was higher than non-smoker(2.72), and it was higher over 3 times a week than almost no drinking as for frequence alcohol intake. 3. The amount of loss for inter-dental alveolar crest was higher in men(71.79) than women(42.24), was highest of the 'professional' in the occupational fields, and smoker(67.23) was higher than non-smoker(48.22). 4. There was significantly difference in the number of missing tooth between age and frequence of alcohol intake. These results that occupational fields, smoking and alcohol intake were related to the number of sextants possessing periodontal pocket and amount of loss for inter-dental alveolar crest.
In this study, 110 adults aged 40 to 69 years were surveyed from April 28, 2016, to May 28, 2016 to analyze their periodontal status according to daily stress, coping methods, and oral health behavior. The collected data were analyzed using the t-test, one-way analysis of variance, and hierarchical multiple regression. Daily stress levels of all subjects were most frequent potential risk 64.5% of the subjects, the high risk 19.1% and 16.4% of the health group. Regarding stress coping methods, active methods recorded 2.46, passive methods recorded 2.32. Regarding oral health behaviors, subjects brushed an average of 2.45 times daily, for an average of 2 minutes. Futhermore, 69.1% of subjects brushed before bedtime and 89.1% practiced scaling. Regarding periodontal status, the O'Leary index was 73.45, gingivitis index was 1.30, an average of 2.83 quadrants possessed a periodontal pocket. The hierarchical multiple regression analysis identified, type of employment (${\beta}=-0.348$), scaling (${\beta}=-0.253$), and age (${\beta}=0.244$) as factors that influence the number of quadrants possessing a periodontal pocket. These results confirmed that the oral health behavior of scaling, but not stress levels of coping methods, strongly influenced periodontal status.

In most patients with severe crowding or lip protrusion, orthodontic treatment with tooth extraction is done. In these patients, even though space is closed after orthodontic treatment, gingival invagination is observed on the extracted site. Since there are possibilities of space recurrence and regional periodontic problems occurrence, periodontic treatment is necessary on the gingival invagination region. This case was a 16 year old female with a chief complaint of crooked teeth. Since her maxillary premolars were already extracted a few years ago at a local dental clinic, orthodontic treatment was done by extracting mandibular premolars. Unlike maxillary premolar regions, gingival invagination occurred in mandibular premolar regions and gingival flattening was done by excising the gingival invaginated region. Gingival flattening was done once on the left side, twice on the right side and showed stable results. This is a case report of a patient that was prone to gingival invagination after orthodontic treatment with extraction and was treated with gingival flattening.

Sex Hormones exert significant influence in body physiology throughout life. Some reports suggested increased sex hormone levels correlate with an increased prevalence of gingivitis. The objectives of this pilot study are to(1) address the link between menstrual cycle and MMP-9, MMP-8, IL-$1{\beta}$ of gingival crevicular fluid during 4 weeks and (2) discuss the major biomarker of periodontal status. 7 female and 3 male volunteer who didn't have smoking habit, medical and dental disease after informed consent, were seen twice a week for 4 weeks. GCF samples were collected and GCF levels of MMP-9, MMP-8, IL-$1{\beta}$ were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The GCF levels of MMP-9, MMP-8, IL-$1{\beta}$ had fluctuation according to menstrual cycle, but the changes of those were not significant by Friedman matched samples test. There is no difference between female and male subjects by Mann-Whitney U test. The correlation of MMP-8, MMP-9 and IL-$1{\beta}$ showed strong by Spearman correlation(0.644-0.945). This study confirms menstrual cycle doesn't influence the periodontium of healthy female subjects.
The purpose of this study was to obtain database for development of education and programs of dental examination in industries. survey and dental examination was conducted by dental hygienist and dentist, and the data from 1016 respondents were analyzed. The result obtained was as follows: 1. Dental disease was 58.2% among 1,016, there was most a lot of peridontal disease, and overlapping disease, dental caries, missing tooth, fracture and abrasion, in order. 2. Utilization of dental care was 40% for last six months, it was significant high that age and working periods, married in marriage state, and unhealthy in subjective dental health state. 3. It was significant high that woman, fourty ages, middle economic state and working periods in above three times of tooth brushing a day. 4. Utilization of dental hygiene auxiliary devices was 41.8%, it was significant high that age, marriage state, economic state and working periods. 5. As for relationship between dental disease status and dental health behaviors, a person without periodontal disease was significant high in above three times a day, and a person without extraction, a person with fracture and abrasion, a person without overlapping disease was significant high in utilization of dental hygiene auxiliary devices.
The aim of this study was to analyze the factors related to self-reported halitosis. This study performed a questionnaire survey, targeting at 450 adults who lived in Seoul and Gyeonggi area. Main results of this study were as followings. Relationships between socio-demographic characteristics and halitosis showed no significant difference. Relationships between subjective oral health and halitosis, the groups that were treated dental prosthesis, aware of periodontal disease and dry mouth symptoms reported more halitosis (p<0.05). The group that brushed teeth less than twice a day, did not brush teeth after having a snack, and had frequent sweet treat reported more halitosis (p<0.05). The group that more experienced limitation, discomfort, discomfort reported more halitosis (p<0.05). Based on the results derived as above, the self-reported halitosis was shown to be related to periodontal disease, dry mouth, oral hygiene care and quality of life. Therefore, it is considered that preventing periodontal disease and oral dryness as well as reinforcing the oral hygiene care will contribute to prevention of halitosis and enhancement of quality of life.
