  • The goat of the present research is to improve the quality of life of both the elderly patients with dementia and their caregivers. For this Purpose, we developed a communication aid system that is consisted of three modules such as speech recognition engine, graphical agent. and database classified by a nursing schedule. The system was evaluated in an actual environment of nursing facility by introducing the system to an older mail patient with dementia. The comparison study was then carried out with and without system, respectively. The occupational therapists then evaluated subject"s reaction to the system by photographing his behaviors. The evaluation results revealed that the proposed system was more responsive in catering to needs of subject than professional caregivers. Moreover we could see that the frequency of causing the utterances of subject increased by introducing the system.

  • The Empathy for Dementia using Virtual Reality (EDuVR) system, developed by the Jeju Provincial Dementia Center, is a 3D video system capturing the experience of dementia in a first-person perspective using 360 degree vritual reality (VR) technology. It was developed to create a greater understanding of dementia and to help people empathize with individuals with dementia through an immersive VR experience. The EDuVR shows how a dementia patient has impairments in memory, orientation, language, judgment and problem solving, as well as problems with activities of daily living. The present study reported the effectiveness of the EDuVR experience in changing public awareness of, and attitude toward, dementia. Sixty-six participants were assigned to the EDuVR (n = 34) or the conventional education (n = 32) groups, and two types of questionnaires - attitude and awareness questionnaires - were administered to the subjects before and after the EDuVR experience or education. The simulator sickness and presence questionnaires were administered to the EDuVR group to assess cybersickness and presence of the VR experience. As a results, the attitude and awareness toward dementia patients changed positively in both the EDuVR and the conventional education groups, and these changes did not differ between two groups. Only one person reported a significant level of cybersicness after experiencing the EDuVR system. These results suggest that the EDuVR enhances the level of understanding and empathy for dementia and would be a useful tool for improving awareness in the general public.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of group occupational therapy including education regarding depression, anxiety, and activity participation in people with dementia. Methods : Nineteen people with dementia were randomly assigned to experimental(n=10) and control group(n=9). The participants in experimental group conducted occupational therapy including education, whereas the control group occupational therapy only. Pre- and post- assessments were applied using Korean form of Geriatric Depression Scale(K-GDS), Hamilton Anxiety Scale(HAM-A), State Trait Anxiety Inventory(STAI-X-1), and Korean Activity Card Sort (K-ACS). Results : When comparing the differences between pre- and post- of the intervention, the depression and anxiety of occupational therapy group including the educational program decreased statistically(p<.05). Conclusion : This study has shown that occupational therapy including education has significant effects on reducing depression and anxiety in people with dementia. In the future, it will be necessary to develop an intervention program to strengthen the psychological and emotional aspects of people with dementia, and various studies in the field of occupational therapy focusing on care giver education should be conducted.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the status of oral health care in dementia patients living in long-term care facilities and to investigate the effects of this on swallowing function and swallowing-quality of life. The subjects were 60 demented patients who were admitted to long-term care facilities in Gwangju and Jeonnam provinces. Their Oral Health Assessment Tool(OHAT), Clinical Dysphagia Scale(CDS), and Oral Health Impact Profile 14(OHIP-14) were measured. The results of this study were as follows: First, the effect of oral health care on dentition patients using long-term care facilities on swallowing function and swallowing-quality of life was significantly different according to oral care score (p<.05)(p<.01). Second, the relationship between oral health care and swallowing function of dementia patients and swallowing-quality of life. was examined. As a result, oral health care of dementia patients was affected by swallowing function (r=.405, p<.01) the swallowing-quality of life (r=.462, p<.01) and swallowing function were significantly correlated with swallowing-quality of life (r=.351, p<.01). Therefore, the oral health care of users of long-term care facilities was closely related to swallowing function and swallowing-quality of life.

  • The medical world has predicted that in 2020, the numbers of senile dementia patients in Korea will be more than 600,000. Currently, the distributions of dementia patients according to ages are 3% in the 70s, 23% between 85-89 years, and 58% over 95 years; further, it should be noted that the incidence rates sharply increase with age. Dementia, dubbed "disease of the 21st century", affects not only the patient but also the lives of the patient's family, decreases the family's quality of life, and sometimes accompanies enough burden and pain to destroy some families, and it is sometimes noted to cause significant problems in the society. This study was conducted at a dementia prevention center at a university by enrolling senior patients participating in the dementia prevention center program. The study aimed to actively develop dementia prevention programs and train specialized workforce for dementia prevention.

  • This study is a methodological study that explains the procedure for verifying effectiveness in developing practical guidelines for cognitive programs suitable for dementia patients. Based on the development of evidence-based new clinical practice guidelines, a preliminary recommendation for the domestic dementia patient care guidelines was developed. The practical guidelines consisted of the final four types, and the content validity score of the configuration items was 0.87 to 1 point. In the sub-categories of field applicability, appropriateness score was 3.95 to 4.34 points, applicability score was 3.57 to 4.27 points, and predicted effect score was 3.84 to 4.22 points. Through the examination of the content validity and field applicability of experts, it was confirmed that the practical guidelines developed in this study can be used as the basis for establishing an intervention plan for dementia cognitive program managers engaged in clinical practice. In future studies should further facilitate the development of evidence-based treatment guidelines to select appropriate treatment activities for dementia patients.
