  • The purpose of this study was to identify the dementia knowledge, attitudes and preventive behaviors of hemodialysis patients. The participants were 128 hemodialysis patients at the Artificial Kidney Center in G hospital of P city. Data were collected by self-report questionnaires from September 22 to October 10, 2017. Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient and Hierarchical regression analysis with SPSS/WIN 23.0. Dementia knowledge was significantly different by education level (F=4.58, p<.01). The attitude toward dementia was different by age (F=3.08, p<.05) and education level (F=6.64, p<.01). The preventive behaviors were different by gender (t=-2.30, p<.05). Dementia knowledge was positively correlated with attitude toward to dementia (r=.189, p<.05) and attitude toward dementia was positively correlated with preventive behaviors (r=.280, p<.01). The influencing factor for preventive behaviors was attitude toward dementia (${\beta}=.319$, p<.01). Therefore, in order to promote dementia preventive behaviors in hemodialysis patients, an education program should be developed to improve dementia knowledge and positive attitude toward dementia.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the process for the elderly with palsy to solve conflicts with the elderly with dementia in day care center through the narrative therapy group work. For this, the researcher enacted the Narrative therapy group work on the 12 elderly with palsy for seven sessions, and analysed these data through qualitative case study method. The results of this study are as follows. First, the elderly with palsy became to recognize the elderly with dementia as 'the people suffering from dementia' rather than 'the problem', and tried to care them rather than to blame. Second, they became to recognize themselves as 'component people' rather than 'the victim'. Third, they grew intimate and collaborated with themselves. Fourth, they participated actively in day care center. It was discussed connection between these changes and narrative therapy skills, such as to separate problem from people, to respect client as expert for one's problem, to seek unique outcome. The recommendation is suggested that it is important to enlarge choice to participate for long-term care service consumer and to apply narrative therapy on the elderly.

  • The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of baking and pastry activity programs on the cognitive function of the elderly with dementia. The study was carried out on 19 elderly with dementia who attended K city C daycare center and who provided consent. A total of 10 elderly were assigned to the experimental group, and the other nine were assigned to the control group. To test the effectiveness of the program, this research used the pretest-posttest control group design. The experimental group administered the program from January 2, 2017 to February 28, 2017. However, the control group did not undergo a separate program. Fisher's accuracy test was performed to identify the homogeneity of the experimental and control groups. Mann-Whitney U Test was conducted to identify the homogeneity of the cognitive functions of the experimental and control groups prior to the launch of the program. Wilcoxon Matched-Pairs Signed-Rank and Mann-Whitney U Test were conducted to determine the effects of the program on the cognitive function of the elderly with dementia. As a result, the program verified the effect on the cognitive function of the elderly with dementia. According to these findings, the important issues and limitations of the research are discussed.

  • Objectives : Anemia is a common problem in the management of elderly patients. Recent studies reported that anemia was associated with cognitive impairment and Alzheimer's disease. This study was aimed to analyze the differences of hemoglobin levels in Korean patients with Alzheimer's disease(AD) dementia, mild cognitive impairment(MCI), and healthy controls. Furthermore, the study also examined if any association between hemoglobin levels and cognitive functions existed. Methods : A total of 116 Korean elderly adults were participated in this study(mean age 74.67 years ; 60.3% female). The Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSE-K), Clinical Dementia Rating(CDR) and Global Deterioration Scale(GDS) were applied to all subjects. Hematological and related blood chemistry values were investigated. Results : We found that patients with AD dementia had significantly lower hemoglobin and hematocrit levels than MCI subjects and healthy control group. The hemoglobin levels showed a positive correlation with MMSE-K and negative correlation with CDR, GDS. Conclusions : Among Korean elderly, low hemoglobin level is associated with a cognitive impairment. This study indicates that AD is associated with anemia, and low hemoglobin levels may contribute to potentially useful clinical markers of AD. The risk factor for dementia needs to be confirmed by prospective longitudinal studies in a larger group of patients.

  • This study aims to investigate the performance and satisfaction of occupational therapists at the Dementia Relief Center for health care of the elderly in local communities, and to provide basic data necessary for role establishment by checking occupational therapists' tasks according to the priority. The subjects of this study were occupational therapists in dementia care centers in the Honam area and Gwangju Metropolitan City, who were surveyed via mail and e-mail. The survey had a total of 54 items covering the general characteristics of the therapists and current state of the centers (n=8), performance and satisfaction with the service areas and task content of the centers (n=45), and tasks that were considered important (one short-answer question). It was found that occupational therapists at the Dementia Relief Center were mainly carrying out the "Dementia Prevention Management Projects", which provided the programs for the patients, and they showed the highest satisfaction. Although the 'MMSE-DS' is occupational therapists' own area with high performance and satisfaction, it was not assigned to the occupational therapists at the Dementia Relief Center, indicating that the role was insufficient. The tasks related "administrative works and strengthening community capacities" showed low performance and satisfaction, but they are essential for the operation of the Dementia Relief Center and the management of the patients, so the plans to increase the occupational therapists' performance should be established. The categories of projects that occupational therapists consider important were also consistent with those they had to perform. It means the occupational therapists at the Dementia Relief Center recognized their unique roles. In this context, to establish the role of occupational therapist at the Dementia Relief Center, it is necessary to amend the operating guidelines based on the performance, satisfaction, and priorities of the projects, and to develop the curriculums and programs that can improve the tasks with insufficient performance and low satisfaction.

  • This study was conducted to identify the level of knowledge, attitude, and educational needs toward dementia, as well as to understand factors influencing educational needs for dementia among nursing students. A total of 213 nursing students at three universities in C province were invited to this study from September to November in 2015. Collected data were analyzed using an independent t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe's test, Pearson's correlation coefficient, and multiple regression. All analyses were conducted with SPSS 20.0 for Windows. The level of knowledge, attitude and educational needs for dementia were $12.33{\pm}4.54$ out of 20, $35.53{\pm}8.92$ out of 50 (Item mean 3.56), and $116.46{\pm}32.06$ out of 160 (Item mean 3.63), respectively. There were significant positive correlations between attitude and educational needs (r=0.79, p=<0.01). Moreover, the factors influencing educational needs for dementia in nursing students were attitude (${\beta}=0.73$, p<0.001) and grade (${\beta}=0.19$, p=0.001). Development of diverse educational programs for dementia based on this study can be a cornerstone to improve knowledge and attitudes toward dementia in nursing students. Developing nursing curriculum considering students' attitudes toward dementia and grade may also help increase knowledge of dementia.
