  • Diagnosis and treatment of major reproductive failures were carried out for 836 dairy cows of 12 farms in Kimje area from May 1999 to May 2000. Reproductive failures were classified into four categories: uterine diseases, ovarian diseases, combination of uterine and ovarian diseases, and anestrus with corpus luteum (CL), based on the diagnosis by both rectal palpation and ultrasonography (SA 600, Medison, 5.OMHz transducer). 1. Of 102 cows examined, 15 cows were diagnosed as pregnant. Cows with real reproductive failures were therefore 87 cows and the rate of reproductive failures far all the cows of 12 farms was 10.4% (87/836). 2. Of 57 cows with reproductive failures, the cows with uterine diseases were 33 heads (37.9%), with ovarian diseases: 30 heads (34.5%), with combination form: 16 heads (18.4%), and with anestrus with CL: 8 heads (9.2%). 3. Of 87 cows with reproductive failures, 7 cows were slaughtered and 80 cows were treated by hormone or douche. The cows expressed estrus were 74 cows (92.5%, 74/80 heads) and 56 cows were pregnant (70.0%, 56/80 heads) following treatment. 4. The reproductive failures tended to be increased as the period proceeded from 30 days (2.3%, 2/87 heads) to over 120 days (56.3%, 49/87 heads) after parturition. 5. Associated other diseases to reproductive failures were foot diseases(5 cows), joint diseases (5 heads), urovagina (6 heads), and rectovaginal fistula (2 cows) and the rate of occurrence of associated diseases was 20.7% (18/87 heads). 6. No reproductive record was used in 7 farms of 12 farms and 5 farms had no play ground or not used for the cows. These results indicated that diagnosis fur reproductive failures by rectal palpation along with ultrasonography was more accurate than the conventional rectal palpation and brought better result of treatment for major types of reproductive failures. It was also indicated that non-uses of reproductive record and play ground were also important factors in occurrence of reproductive failures.

  • The object of this study were twofold, namely, to study on (1) effect of using ultrasound therapy for curing warts (2) any relation between a cure for warts and onset of warts, as well as subject age. Our subjects, composed of 22 people from age 12 to 49, were assigned to two groups, experimental group and control group. We experimented for 8 session on 12 people in the experimental group by using ultrasound therapy to observe any morphological change in the warts or disappearance of a pain. However, we did not cure warts in the other group, control group. The result of the study are as follows. (1) Ultrasound therapy has an effect on curing warts. (2) Neither condition, onset of warts or subject age, had no influence on a cure for warts.

  • Photoacoustic imaging is a hybrid real-time imaging technique that combines high optical contrast and ultrasonic resolution. It has primarily been utilized in pre-clinical research and has evolved into clinical practice. In this paper, we review photoacosutic imaging for detection of primary canccer and metastatis and its limitation in translation from pre-clinical to clinical application.

  • A 1-year-old, 2.35 kg spayed female American short hair cat was referred with episodic signs of heat at 3 months after ovariohysterectomy. Through the screening tests, bilateral cystic, ovary like masses were shown at the caudal to both kidneys with high serum estradiol concentration. It was considered that the patient was suffered from ovarian remnant syndrome. Laparoscopic exploration was performed, and each of mass lesions was resected by ultrasonic scalpel. Patient was recovered favorably and has been doing well without recurrence of estrus signs until 2 years after surgery.

  • Background: The number of old people with degenerative osteoarthritis one of the chronic disease, were constantly increased. Many researchers have made a great effort to verify the effects of ultrasound and laser therapy in degenerative osteoarthritis treatment. This study applied ultrasound-laser integration therapy on knee joint degenerative osteoarthritis and compared its effect with ultrasound and laser. Methods: We assigned 60 patients age 65 to 85 who had been diagnosed as knee joint degenerative osteoarthritis in G nursing home in Daejeon city. Randomization was done in blocks of three, holding twenty people per each group to receive either ultrasound, laser, ultrasound-laser integration therapy. This study carried out the experiment for 6 weeks to from April 17, 2010. We measured variables using visual analog scale (VAS) and pressure threshold meter (PTM) of the effects by before and after exercise. Results: It has been found that VAS was reduced and PTM was increased in all three groups. Compare with the other groups, Ultrasound-laser integration therapy group had lower VAS and higher PTM than ultrasound therapy and laser therapy group. Conclusions: These results lead us to the conclusion that ultrasound-laser integration have influenced the pain reduction of the knee degenerative osteoarthritis.

  • Splenic irradiation in chronic myelogenous leukemia is reserved for patients who have painful splenemegaly despite chemotherapy and/or inoperable splenomegaly because of huge size. The role of splenic irradiation is diminution of painful splenomegaly and indirect effect of splenic irradiation on unirradiated hematopoietic and lymphoreticular tissue such as reduction of leukocyte count and increase of hemoglobin level. We report on a useful clinical method for splenic irradiation in chronic myelogenous leukemia. We have used sonography as the tool of simulation. The portal size using modified method is smaller than the field size of conventional simulation, and so this method suggests that useful to irradiation of huge splenomegaly, effective shielding of critical organ and the downfall of complication during irradiation of spleen.

  • An 8-year-old castrated male domestic shorthair cat (Case 1) and 3-year-old castrated male Siamese cat (Case 2) was presented with acute paresis of the hindlimbs, constant open-mouth breathing, and hemoptysis. Heart murmur (Case 1) and gallop sound (Case 2) was ausculated on the left heart base. Radiographs revealed alveolar infiltration of the caudodorsal lung lobes with aerophagea in Case 1 and prominent cardiomegaly in Case 2. Marked concentric hypertrophy of the ventricular septum and free wall, and left atrial enlargement was detected through echocardiography in both cats. Based on the examinations including echocardiography, those cats were diagnosed as hypertropic cardiomyopathy. Abdominal ultrasound revealed echogenic material in the aortic trifurcation region, aortic thromboembolism (ATE). Although prognosis of those animals was guarded, interventional therapeutic approach through direct endovascular thrombolytic therapy was attempted. ATE was visualized through angiography; however dissolving the embolus using interventional thrombolytic approach was not successful due to the extensive thrombus.

  • Tuberculous peritonitis is a rare cause of intra-abdominal infection. Although sometimes asymptomatic, most of the patients have fever, weight loss, abdominal pain, and edema. The diagnosis of tuberculous peritonitis is difficult and sometimes delayed because of confusion of the disease with other illnesses and the non-specificity of signs and symptoms. Tuberculous peritonitis is examined with ultrasonography and computerized tomogram, but confirmed by biopsy or tuberculosis culture. Ascitic fluid is exudates with a lot of lymphocytes and elevated protein. Tuberculous peritonitis is treated successfully with isoniazid, rifampicin for one year, pyrazinamide for first 2 months and streptomycin for first one month. We experienced one case of tuberculous peritonitis with transudate of ascitic fluid, confirmed by biopsy using colonoscopy, and treated successfully.
