  • Purpose: The objective of this study was to evaluate the possibility of substitution of the zonography for the full-mouth periapical radiography in aspect of radiation protection. Materials and Methods: Rando phantom and LiF TLD chips were used for dosimetry. The absorbed doses at brain, skin above the TMJ. parotid gland. bone marrow in the mandibular body. and thyroid gland during the full-mouth periapical radiography. panoramic radiography. and zonography were measured. Resul ts: From the zonography. the absorbed doses to the brain. the skin over the TMJ. and the parotid gland were relatively high. but the absorbed doses to the bone marrow in the mandibular body and. especially. the thyroid gland were very low. Conclusion: The zonography can be an alternative to the full-mouth periapical radiography in aspect of radiation protection.

  • 178 naturally exfoliated maxillary deciduous central incisors, 149 deciduous lateral incisors of children at exfoliation stage were studied on the degree and the tendency of the root resorption, and the age of exfoliation of the deciduous central and lateral incisors. The results were as follows; 1. The root of maxillary deciduous central and lateral incisors tended to be resorbed disto-lingually. 2. The age of exfoliation of maxillary deciduous central incisor was 7.27 year in male, 7.01 year in female, and the age of exfoliation of maxillary deciduous lateral incisor was 8.22 year in male, 7.77 year in female. 3. The exfoliation age of maxillary deciduous central and lateral incisors was earlier in female than in male.

  • Completely avulsed tooth caused by a traumatic injury needs replantation for treatment choice. But, replantated tooth usually comes with inflammatory root resorption, replacement resorption and ankylosis, moreover ankylosis cause severe functional and esthetic problems. The outcome of replantated tooth depends on the following factors; minimal damage to pulp and periodontal tissue, the length of extraoral time, the medium of the tooth stored, the level of root formation and so on. The purpose of this case report is to describe the variable resorption pattern and to discuss types that influence the occurrence of resorption.

  • The purpose of this study was to observe and analyze the initial marginal bone resorption changes according to the patterns of cover screw exposures during healing period followed by implants installation. Total 64 fixtures(TiUniteTM, NobelBiocare, Sweden) were installed in partially edentulous jaws of 28 patients, who were selected retrospectively and were shown at least one cover screw exposure. Cover screw exposures were defined at 1 month recall. According to the patterns of exposures, groups were categorized into group 1 (No exposure), group 2 (pin-point exposure), group 3 (less than 1/2 of cover screw), group 4 (more than 1/2 of cover screw), group 5 (total exposure). Periapical radiographs were taken in purpose of changes of marginal bone level between installation and 2 month recall. Healing abutments were secured on the exposure groups at 2 month recall. Results were as follows: 1. Marginal bone resorptions were identified whenever cover screws were exposed. 2. Group 2 and 3 were shown significantly increased bone loss more than other group (P <.05). 3. Group 4 and 5 were shown significantly increased bone loss more than group 1, however, less than other groups ( P <.05). Conclusionally, cover screw exposure may cause marginal bone resorptions, therefore, early connection of healing abutment is clinically helpful.

  • Management options for impacted maxillary canines can include (1) continued observation, (2) extraction of the primary canine to aid spontaneous eruption, (3) uncovering and bonding of the impacted tooth and its eruption using orthodontic traction, (4) autotransplantation, and (5) extraction followed by prosthetic replacement. Autotransplantation should be considered when the degree of malposition is too severe to correct by orthodontic alignment. The present report describes the management of an ectopic eruption of the left maxillary canine in an 10-year-old girl. The treatment included the extraction of primary maxillary left canine and the autotransplantation using a Rapid Prototyping model. By using RP model to contour the recipient bone and check for fitting in the prepared socket, the extra-oral time can reduce. The autotransplanted canine showed mobility within normal limit, negative response to percussion and positive to electric pulp test after 6 months.

  • One or two mesiodens are mostly common to the clinician. However, three mesiodens is rarely found and can cause complications such as orthodontic problems or interruptions of the adjacent teeth with more than 1 or 2 mesiodens. Many factors cause irregularities in the permanent dentition. Mesiodens, especially in the anterior maxilla, can disturb the eruption of adjacent permanent teeth and cause diastemas, ectopic eruptions, root resorption, or the formation of dentigerous cysts. The early diagnosis of mesiodens is important for preventing such complications, and the timing of intervention should be based on their location and number. Periodic checkups and improved diagnostic devices make it easy to find mesiodens and associated complications. In this case, 3 supernumerary teeth in the maxillary anterior region were affecting the eruption of the adjacent permanent incisors. To minimize complications and preserve the deciduous teeth, the three supernumerary teeth were extracted in 2 steps. Since cone-beam computed tomography was not available, a brace wire was used to measure the depth of the mesiodens.

  • Many studies has been conducted concerning prevention of unnecessary complications such as root resorption during orthodontic too th movement under various mechanical forces. Nowadays, the cause of the root resorption is not thought to be confined only to mechanical forces. But the factor that affects bone metabolism are thought to be major one of the predisposing factors. The light microscope and scanning electron microscope were used to the effects of 60 gm, and 100 gm of tipping force on root resorption of cats, which were treated with Etidronate disodium. The results were as follows: 1. In the 60gm control group, hyalinization on the compression site of periodontal ligament appeared after first week and second week. In the 60gm experimental group, it appeared after first week with low frequency. In the 100gm control group it appeared with high frequency by first and second week while in 100gm experimental group, it appeared with low frequency. 2 In the 100gm control group, resorption of the cementum and the alveolar bone rapidly increased after second week. In the 60gm experimental group, resorption or formation of alveolar bone and cementum didn't appear all through the experimental period. 3. In the 100gm control group, formation of cementum and alveolar bone appeared after first week while in the 100gm experimental group, formation of cementum and alveolar bone appeared after second week and fourth week respectively. In the 60gm control group, formation of the cementum didn't appear all through the experimental period. 4. In the control group, the root resolution of 100gm group was higher than that of 60gm group after second week, while in experimental group, root resorption didn't appear regardless of the forces.

  • Supernumerary tooth describes an excess of tooth number, which are found in primary dentition with 0.3-0.8%, permanent dentition with 1.0-3.5% prevalence. Their frequency is about 2:1 (male vs female) and 9:1 (maxilla vs mandible). However, occurrence is very rare in the incisor region of the mandible. We need a early diagnosis and appropriate treatment plan because of possibility of diastema, eruption failure, displacement, rotation of the associated permanent teeth, root resorption, dentigerous cyst with presence of the supernumerary teeth. This is a case report about two impacted supernumerary teeth found in madibular anterior region of 6 years old girl. One was extracted and another was retained because of fusion with permanent central incisor on the labial surface.

  • A retrospective study of 15 cases of ameloblastoma in children and adolescents was performed. During the period of evaluation, 46 patients with ameloblastoma were seen, of which 15(32.6%) cases were in the patients aged 18 years or younger with the mean age of 14.5 years. There was more prevalence in male (1.5: 1). All the cases occured in the mandible, the molar and ramus area was the most frequent location(66.7%), and the most frequent sign was swelling of the face or jaw. Radiographically, 11(73.3%) cases manifested unilocular leion. Cortical expansion and root resorption were presented in 14(93.3%) and 11 (73.3%) cases respectively. Pexiform and plexiform unicystic types were common in the ameloblastoma occured in young patients.
