The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship of job satisfaction and self-esteem of dental hygienists and nurse's aides. Data were obtained from 327 dental hygienists and nurse's aides who were working at dental clinics, hospitals located in Seoul city. The results, derived from using the SPSS 10.0, were as follows: (1) The level of job satisfaction was 3.02 point, the level of self-esteem was 3.41 point. (2) Service organization and types of occupation have influenced meaningfully on job satisfaction. Hospitals(3.14) are higher than dental clinics(3.0), dental hygienists(3.14) are higher than nurse's aides(2.92). (3) Service organization and types of occupation have influenced meaningfully on self-esteem. Hospitals(3.55) are higher than dental clinics(3.39), dental hygienists(3.52) are higher than nurse's aides(3.31). (4) The correlation between job satisfaction and self-esteem of dentistry employee showed statistically significant correlation.

A comparative study was made about health resources, medical care service statistics and public health service statistics by health subcenters at Jangdong and Jangpyung townships, Jangheung County, Chollanamdo before and after the unification of two health subcenter to improve their function. 1. While two general physicians, one dentist, 4 nurse aids arid one oral hygienist were working at two health subcenters with simple facility with examination room and public health office in 1997 prior to the unification, in 1999 after the unification of two health subcenters 14 staff including a specialist physician, a general physician, a dentist, a herb hygienist, a radiology technician and a physical therapist were working in the new health subcenters equipped with appropriate facilities in two storey building. 2. In 1997 before the unification the yearly total income of two health subcenters was 78,815 thousand won(about 14,000 won per capita) and the amount was 140,376 thousand won(about 25,000 won per capita) in 1999 after the unification. And the income was used for operation of health subcenters excluding personnel expense. 3. While 90.5% of visitors to the health subcenters came for general medical care, and 91.6% came for the revisit before the unification, after the unification 71.2% came for general medical care, 10.8% for dental care, 16.5% for oriental physician's care, 29.7% for the first visit and 70.3% for revisit. Most common problem cared for was musculoskeletal disorder like arthralgia. Average treatment cost per person per month was 9,363 won before the unification and 8,309 won after the unification. 4. Through the comparison of execution rate of public health services before and after the unification. the practice rate of most health service among target population including visiting service for chronic illness, maternal and child health service and immunization service increased after the unification. The practice rate of tuberculosis control service, hypertension control and diabetes management was a little decreased. In conclusion, continuous effort to satisfy all persons in two townships and evaluation are necessary to coincide with the spirit of unification of two health subcenters.

The purpose of this exploratory study was to assess work performance of dental hygienists and identify factors influencing their work performance. A questionnaire was administered to 87 dental hygienists working dental clinics based in Ulsan during the period from June 2005 through July 2005. A total of 77 questionnaires were collected and used for analysis. SPSS 11.5 program was employed for statistical analysis. All data were expressed in terms of numbers, percentage and mean score. The results of the study are summarized as follows: 1. There was a significantly positive correlation between age and the level of work performance in the Scientific competency group and Esthetical competency group. 2. Unmarried dental hygienists demonstrated better work performance than married dental hygienists in Scientific, Esthetical and Personal competency groups, showing a statistically significant difference. 3. By education level, those with junior college degree had better work performance than those who are attending or graduated from college in the four groups. By workplace, those who were working at non-general hospitals demonstrated a higher level of performance in the three groups except the Ethical group, but the difference was not statistically significant. 4. A significantly positive relationship was observed between monthly pay and work performance in the Scientific, Personal and Esthetical competency groups. 5. A positive relationship was observed between work experience and performance in the Scientific competency group. But there was no difference between work experience and performance in the other three groups. 6. By working environment, those who were working with assistant nurses showed a higher level of performance than those working without assistant nurses in the Scientific competency group, and the difference was statistically significant.

The aim of this study is to investigate the awareness and perception of pediatric dentists regarding dental health insurance (DHI) system in Korea. Online surveys were sent to the members of the Korean Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (KAPD), and the responses were collected. The survey, consisting of 41 questions, was subdivided into 'general background of the respondents', 'the awareness on national health insurance (NHI) and DHI', 'the awareness on DHI pertaining to pediatric dentistry', 'issues that need improvement on DHI pertaining to pediatric dentistry', 'DHI claims', and 'the roles of KAPD in DHI'. In total, 302 responded, with a response rate of 28.9%. Excluding 2 questionnaires with insufficient answers, a total of 300 survey results were analyzed. According to the analysis, pediatric dentists thought that the coverage of DHI was not as sufficient compared to that of NHI, but were expecting its scope to broaden in the future. The satisfaction rate was higher in pit and fissure sealant and composite resin filling than in caries-detecting quantitative light-induced fluorescence. Pediatric dentists considered permanent tooth composite resin filling (65.7%) needed an increase in insurance copayment, while topical fluoride application (74.7%) to require insurance coverage. DHI claims were generally handled by dental hygienists and/or nursing assistants. Approximately half of the respondents answered that they have had experiences on appealing for insurance denials. Lastly, pediatric dentists generally had a positive attitude towards providing information for the DHI. This study is expected to be used as a sound dataset for the DHI policy development concerning pediatric dentistry.
