The purpose of this study was to evaluate treatment effects of the modified Teuscher appliance (MTA) in early Class II division 1 malocclusion. For this purpose, treatment effects of the bionator were compared with those of the MTA. The twenty subjects who were treated excellently with bionator and MTA were selected in each group. In pre- and post-treatment lateral cephalograms, 50 variables were measured, and then the differences between pretreatment and posttreatment data of the bionator and the MTA were statistically evaluated by t-test. The results were as follows : 1. The linear measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are U1 to FH, U1 to PP, U6 to FH, U6 to PP, Ar-Pog, ramus height, L1 to A-Pog, L1 to facial plane (p<0.05). 2. The angular measurements that showed large difference between the bionator group and the MTA group are SNB, SNA, FABA, APDI (p<0.05). 3. The measurements of the growth pattern such as facial height ratio, FMA, SN-MP angle showed no difference between two groups (p>0.05). These results suggest that the bionator influence the mandiblar growth and lower dentoalveolar structures more than the MTA, and the MTA influence upper jaw and upper dentoalveolar structures more than the bionator comparatively in early Class II division I malocclusion.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the combined use of paste resin with sealant as an adhesive of the indirect bonding. The resin bases made of light-cured resin were bonded to the bovine incisors at a distance of 0.0, 0.2 or 0.4 mm using the sealant only or the mixture of sealant and paste resin. Bond strength of each group was measured using universal testing machine. The results were as follows : 1. The bond strength was reduced in both groups as the distance between enamel surface and resin base increased. 2. The bond strength showed no statistical difference between two groups in case the distance between enamel surface and resin base was 0.0 mm. 3. In case the distance between enamel surface and resin base was 0.2 or 0.4 mm, the sealant with paste resin group showed significantly higher bond strength than the sealant only group. The results of the present study indicate that the use of paste resin with sealant may be desirable as an adhesive in indirect bonding, particularly in case a gap is suspected between enamel surface and resin base.
In order to investigate the action mechanism of protein kinase C on $K^+$ channel in osteoblastic cell, effects of phorbol 12, 13-dibutyrate on human osteoblast-like cells (G292) were studied by patch clamp technique with cell-attacked configuration. 111 this experiment, 45pS ion channel was dominant in G292 cell line according to their approximate conductances in symmetrical 140mM KCl saline at holding potential of 60mV. In torrent-voltage relationship, reversal potential was 5.5mV at the condition of potassium enriched saline in the pipette and -27 mV at the condition of standard extracellular saline In the pipette. Phorbol 12, 13-dibutyrate 10nM increased the open probability of 45pS channel and staurosporine, an inhibitor of protein kinase C, suppressed this effect. Phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate moved the reversal potential of 45pS channel to more negative potential and increased the single channel current at the same membrame potential. In order to check the activation of protein kinase C in G292 cell by phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate, western blot of protein kinase C was performed. Phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate $0.1{\mu}M$ translocated protein kinase C from cellular compartment to membrane compartment of the cell. These findings suggest that phorbol 12,13-dibutyrate, one of phorbol esters, activate 45pS channel In G292 cell and affect cell membrane potential, that regulate cellular function.
The purpose of this study was to compare on masse retraction of six anterior teeth with separate canine retraction in the amount of the anchorage loss and the retraction of the anterior teeth. The subjects consisted of 30 adult female patients with Angle Class 1 malocclusions who were treated by .022' straight wire appliance with 4 first permolar extraction. They were composed of two groups. Group 1 consisted of 15 subjects, whose six anterior teeth were retracted by on masse retraction. Group 2 consisted of 15 subjects, whose canines were retracted separately. Pre-treatment and post-treatment lateral cephalometric radiographs were analyzed. All data were processed statistically with independent samples t-test, and the conclusions were as follows. 1. There was no significant difference in the amount of the anchorage loss between two groups(p>0.05). 2. There was no significant difference in the amount of the retraction of the anterior teeth between two groups(p>0.05). 3. There was a significant difference in the amount of the inclinational change of the upper incisors between two groups. It was greater in Group 2. 4. There was a significant difference in the vertical positional change of the upper incisal edges between two groups. The upper incisal edges in Group 2 were more extruded than Group 1 by about 1mm. 5. There was no significant difference in the vertical positional change of the root apex of the upper incisors between two groups(p>0.05). And there was no significant difference in the vertical positional change of the upper molar(p>0.05).
This study was conducted to investigate changes of airway size, tongue and hyoid position following orthognathic surgery in mandibular prognathism, and how they are adapted to new environment in time dependent manner. 37 patients, who had recieved orthognathic surgery, were selected for this study. lateral cephalogram of each patient was taken at preoperation, immediate postoperation, and over 6 month after operation, and were traced and analyzed The findings of this study were as follows : 1. The size of airway was not changed at PNS and Epiglottis level after operation, but it was changed slightly at 2nd cervical vertebra level. 2. The hyoid was moved inferoposteriorly at immediate postoperation, and then it shifted toward preoperative position, but it remained slightly inferoposterior position. The distance from hyoid to genial tubercle decreased continuously. 3. The position of tongue was moved inferoposteriorly at immediate postoperatioa and then it shifted toward preoperation position, but the root of the tongue remained inferoposteriorly. 4. The distance between tongue and hyoid was increased at immediate postoperation and slightly decreased during follow-up period. 5. The change of the mandibular position was not significantly correlated with changes of airway size, hyoid position, tongue morphology and tongue position.
In this study, Receiver Operating Characteristic(ROC) analysis was used to evaluate the ability of cephalometric measurements to identify patients with Class III malocclusions. ROC analysis is the method for determining the validity of a diagnostic measure and for evaluating the relative value of diagnostic tests. The sample consisted of 496 patients with malocclusion. Class III malocclusion is defined as the dental relationship for which The mesiobuccal groove of the lower first molar is deviated mesially from the mesiobuccal cusp of the upper first molar. Of the total sample of 496 patients, 245 had Class III malocclusions. 16 cephalometric measurements were selected, each of which was treated as a diagnostic test. The ROC curves were generated for each cephalometric measurement with intervals of $1.0^{\circ}$ for angular measurements, 1.0mm for linear measurements. The area under the ROC curves was measured for direct comparison among different diagnostic tests. The results were as follows; 1. The 'Wits' appraisal was found to be a better diagnostic criterion for the presence of Class III malocclusion than any other commonly'used cephalometric measurement. 2. AB plane angle, ANB angle, App-Bpp distance, AF-BF distance, APDI, Distance of point A and Pog to N perpendicular, maxillomandibular differential had high diagnostic value. 3. Cephalometric measurements which evaluate the position of the mandible had moderate diagnostic value. 4. Cephalometric measurements related to the maxilla discriminated least between patients with and without Class III malocclusion.
The purpose of this study was to estimate correlations of craniocervical posture and craniofacial morphology in Korean young adults. The sample consisted of 50 young adults (25 males and 25 females) who had good profile and Class I molar relationship. The analysis of craniocervical posture and craniofacial morphology was performed on lateral cephalograms taken in natural head position. The results were as follows, 1. The mean and the standard deviation of postural and morphologic variables were obtained. 2. Korean young adult had cervical lordosis of which degree between OPT and CVT shows $3.55{\pm}2.58^{\circ}$ 3. Craniocervical posture and each of vertical ratio, facial prognathism, mandibular rotation showed high correlation. 4. Correlation coefficients between postural variables and each of intermaxillary relation, anteroposterior ratio were low. 5. The head positioning error of natural head position was smaller than the inter-individual variability of postural variables.
In the orthopedic therapy, the biomechanical analysis of the appliance is necessary to get a desirable orthopedic effect. The purpose of this study was to investigate the desirable direction and application position of the protraction force. The protraction force of 500g was applied to the first premolar or to the first molar. The direction of force application was paralell or $20^{\circ}$ downward to the occlusal plane respectively. The stress distribution and the displacement within the maxilla was analyzed by a 3-dimensional finite element method. The findings obtained were as follows 1. Protraction forces caused a counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla. 2. The degree of maxillary rotation was less when the force was applied $20^{\circ}$ downward direction to the occlusal plane than when applied to the parallel direction. 3. The degree of rotation of maxilla was greater when the parallel force was applied to the 1st premolar than when applied to the first molar, whereas it was greater when force is applied $20^{\circ}$ downward than at the first premolar. In conclusion, the $20^{\circ}$ downward protraction from the first premolar induced the least counterclockwise rotation of the maxilla and was thought as the desirable direction and application position of the protraction force.
Postpubertal craniofacial growth changes were assessed from serial lateral cephalograms taken at which subjects were 16 and 18 years of age. The sample consisted of 19 male and 14 female subjects with no previous orthodontic treatment who had normal occlusion. The craniofacial growth changes of these samples during this study period might be summarized as follows 1. Significant increase in mean maxillary and mandibular length, cranial base length, posterior md anterior facial height were observed at the age period studied in male(P<0.05), however, in female significant increase was observed only mandibular length(Ar-Gn, Ar-Go) and anterior and posterior facial height(P<0.05). 2. Total growth increment of all measumenats were below 1mm in female, but in male, total mandibular(Ar-Gn) growth increment was 2.0mm and those of mandibular tody length, ram length, posterior facial height, and anteior facial height were 1 to 1.54mm and the others were below 1mm 3. A closing, forward rotation of the mandible occured with a significant decrease in mandibular plane angle of $0.61^{\circ}$ in male(P<0.01). 4. Summarized the findings, even though statistically significant growth changes in some dimensions of female were observed, the amount of growth change were very small, however, in male the growth changes of some dimensions associated with mandible were significant and considerable amount.

This study was undertaken to investigate the midline having the least difference between the right and left structures among the lines that had been used in the study of the craniomaxillofacial asymmetry. The sample of this study consisted of twenty six Korean girls(average 18.9 years old) having normal facial appearance and occlusion. On the frontal cephalometric films of the sample, we divided the whole craniomaxillofacial area into four portions, i.e., cranial, upper facial, lower facial, and dental portion. So, we have found the midlines having the least difference in the whole craniomaxillofacial area itself, and in the each divided four portions, furtherly in the other portions from aimed portion. The findings were as follow: 1. In the whole craniomaxillofacial area, the connecting line between crista galli and anterior nasal spine and the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left foramen rotundums were suitable for the midline. 2. In the cranial portion, established all six lines were suitable for midlines. In the other portions, the perpendicular bisection line between both condylion, the line passing the contact point between right and left mandibular central insisiors among the perpendicular lines between right and left mandibular central incisial tips were suitable midlines fer evaluating the asymmetry of cranial portion. 3. In the upper facial portion, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left zygions was the most suitable midline. In the other portions, the line between the crista galli and the most superior point of the odontoid process, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left gonions, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left condylions, and perpendicular bisecting line between right and left foramens rotundum were suitable midlines for evaluating the asymmetry of the upper facial portion 4. In the dental portion, the perpendicular bisecting lines between right and left buccal cusps of both maxillary first molars and between right and left mandibular first molars were suitable midlines. In the other portions, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left landmarks crossing the lesser wing of the sphenoid bone and orbit, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left mental foramens, and the connecting line between crista galli and prosthion were suitable midlines for evaluating the asymmetry of dental portion. 5. In the lower facial portion, the perpendicular bisecting lines between right and left condylions and between right and left gonions were suitable midlines. In the other portions, the line between the crista galli and anterior nasal spine, the perpendicular bisecting line between right and left foramen rotundums, and the perpendicular bisecting lines between right and left buccal cusps of both mandibular first molars and between right and left maxillary first molars were suitable midlines for evaluating the asymmetry of the lower facial portion.
