To evaluate the vertical loads on railway bridges, conventional load tests are typically conducted. However, these tests often entail significant costs and procedural challenges. Railway conditions involve nearly identical load profiles due to standardized rail systems, which may appear straightforward in terms of load conditions. Nevertheless, this study aims to validate load tests conducted under operational train conditions by comparing the results with those obtained from conventional load tests. Additionally, static and dynamic structural behaviors are extracted from the measurement data for evaluation. To ensure the reliability of load testing, this research demonstrates feasibility through comparisons of existing measurement data with sensor attachment locations, train speeds, responses between different rail lines, tendency analysis, selection of impact coefficients, and analysis of natural frequencies. This study applies to the Dongho Railway Bridge and verifies the applicability of the proposed method. Ten operational trains and 44 sensors were deployed on the bridge to measure deformations and deflections during load test intervals, which were then compared with theoretical values. The analysis results indicate good symmetry and overlap of loads, as well as a favorable comparison between static and dynamic load test results. The maximum measured impact coefficient (0.092) was found to be lower than the theoretical impact coefficient (0.327), and the impact influence from live loads was deemed acceptable. The measured natural frequencies approximated the theoretical values, with an average of 2.393Hz compared to the calculated value of 2.415Hz. Based on these results, this paper demonstrates that for evaluating vertical loads, it is possible to measure deformations and deflections of truss railway bridges through load tests under operational train conditions without traffic control, enabling the calculation of response factors for stress adjustments.
In the prediction of response of a pile in soil, numerical approaches such as a finite element method are generally applied due to complicate nonlinear behaviors of soils. However, the numerical methods based on the finite elements require heavy efforts in pile and soil modelling and also take long computing time. So their usage is limited especially in the early design stage in which principal dimensions and properties are not specified and tend to vary. On the contrary, theoretical approaches adopting linear approximations for soils are relatively simple and easy to model and take short computing time. Therefore, if they are validated to be reliable, they would be applicable in predicting responses of a pile in soil, particularly in early design stage. In case of wind turbines regarded in this study, it is required to assess their natural frequencies in early stages, and in this simulation the supporting pile inserted in soil could be replaced with a simplified elastic boundary condition at the bottom end of the wind turbine tower. To do this, analysis for a pile in soil is performed in this study to extract the spring constants at the top end of the pile. The pile in soil can be modelled as a beam on elastic spring by assuming that the soils deform within an elastic range. In this study, it is attempted to predict pile deformations and influence factors for lateral loads by means of the beam-on-spring model. As two example supporting structures for wind turbines, mono pile and suction pile models with different diameters are examined by evaluating their influence factors and validated by comparing them with those reported in literature. In addition, the deflection profiles along the depth and spring constants at the top end of the piles are compared to assess their supporting features.
The procedure of soil sampling for on-farm quick test of soil nitrate is very important to improve practical application without weighing or drying soil. To improve application of test strip reflectometer as a quick on-farm analytical procedure for the estimation of soil nitrate concentration, three sampling methods such as gravimetric sampling (GS), particle density sampling (PDS) and bulk density sampling (BDS) for on-farm analytical procedure were investigated with twelve soils of 45 to $281mg\;kg^{-1}$ nitrate nitrogen concentration. The nitrate nitrogen concentrations measured from different soils were compared with two analytical methods, ion electrode method as a standard laboratory analysis (SLA) and test strip reflectometer at three moisture conditions, viz. air dried soil, 20 and 40% of maximum water holding capacity (MWHC). Nitrate nitrogen concentration measured by test strip reflectometer was significantly correlated with that of SLA, and the coefficients of variation (CV) were in the range of 3.5 to 10.9%. These CV values less than 10.9% were thought to be acceptable for the measurement of soil nitrate as an on-farm real time analytical procedure. The nitrate nitrogen concentration by BDS for test strip reflectometer as well as ion electrode method was more similar to that of SLA compared with those by GS and PDS especially in case of moist soils. This result suggests that the BDS is more useful than GS and PDS in case of on-farm analytical procedure of soil nitrate for moist soils. Further the practical measurement by BDS could be improved by substituting the bottle cap with a larger container.

Because maglev trains have a propulsion and absorption force without contact with the rails, they can drive safely at high-speed with little oscillation. Recently, test model of a maglev propulsion train was produced and operated, and has since been chosen as a national growth industry in South Korea; there have been many studies and considerable investment in these fields. This study examined the dynamic responses due to bridge-maglev train interaction and basic material to design bridges for maglev trains travelling at high-speed. Depending on the major factors affecting the dynamic effects, the scope of this study was restricted to the relationship between dynamic responses. A concrete box girder was chosen as a bridge model and injured train and rail types in domestic production were selected as the moving train load and guideway analysis model, respectively. From the analysis results, the natural frequency of a bridge for a maglev train, which has a deflection limit L/2000, was higher than those of bridges for general trains. The dynamic responses of the girder of the bridge for a maglev train showed a substantial increase in proportion to the velocities of the moving train like other general bridge cases. Maximum dynamic response of the girder is shown at a moving velocity of 240km/h and increased with increasing moving velocity of train. These results can be used to design a bridge for maglev propulsion trains and provide the basic data to confirm the validity and verification of the design code.
Soil-water characteristic curve, which is called soil retention curve, is required to explore water flows in unsaturated soils, relative permeability of water in multi-phase fluids flow, and change to stiffness and volume of soils. Thus, the understanding of soil-water characteristic curves of soils help us explore the behavior of soils inclduing fluids. Biopolymers are environmental-friendly materials, which can be completely degraded by microbes and have been believed not to affect the nature. Thus, various biopolymers such as deacetylated power, polyethylene oxide, xanthan gum, alginic acid sodium salt, and polyacrylic acid have been studies for the application to soil remediation, soil improvement, and enhanced oil recovery. PAA (polyacrylic acid) is one of biopolymers, which have shown a great effect in enhanced oil recovery as well as soil remediation because of the improvement of water-flood performance by mobility control. The study on soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing PAA (polyacrylic acid) has been conducted through experimentations and theoretical models. The results show that both capillary entry pressure and residual water saturation dramatically increase according to the increased concentration of PAA (polyacrylic acid). Also, soil-water characteristic curves by theoretical models are quite well consistent with the results by experimental studies. Thus, soil-water characteristic curves of sandy soils containing biopolymers such as PAA (polyacrylic acid) can be estimated using fitting parameters for the theoretical model.

Dynamic response measurements from natural excitation were carried out for 25- and 42-story buildings to evaluate their inherent properties, such as natural frequencies, mode shapes and damping ratios. Both are reinforced concrete buildings adopting a core wall, or with shear walls as the major lateral force resisting system, but frames are added in the plan or elevation. In particular, shear walls in a 25-story building are converted to frames from the 4th floor level downwards while maintaining a core wall throughout, resulting in a fairly complex structure. Due to this, along with similar stiffness characteristics in the principal directions, significantly coupled and closely spaced modes of motion are expected in this building, making identification rather difficult. By using various state-of-the-art system identification methods, the modal parameters are extracted, and the results are then compared. Three frequency-domain and four time-domain based operational modal identification methods are considered. Overall, all natural frequencies and damping ratios estimated from the different identification methods showed a greater consistency for both buildings, while mode shapes exhibited some degree of discrepancy, varying from method to method. On the other hand, in comparison with analysis results obtained using the initial finite element(FE) models, test results exhibited a significant difference of about doubled frequencies, at least for the three lower modes in both buildings. To improve the correlation between test and analysis, a few manual schemes of FE model updating based on plausible reasons have been applied, and acceptable results are obtained. The advantages and disadvantages of each identification method used are addressed, and some difficulties that might arise from the updating of FE models, including automatic procedures, for such large structures are carefully discussed.
In general, sand compaction pile(SCP) method and gravel compaction pile(GCP) method have been mainly used to reinforce soft soils such as soft clay or loose sandy ground. But the sand compaction pile method has problems such as lack of sand supply and destroying the nature while collecting sand, the gravel compaction pile method has a problem such as decreased permeability of the drainage material due to clogging. Recently, the study to replace sand with bottom ash which has similar engineering properties with sand is in active. As a fundamental research on bottom ash mixture compaction pile utilizing bottom ash, its behavioral characteristics depending on granular materials and replacement ratio has been simulated numerically. In particular, Settlement Reduction Ratio(SRR) according to the distance from the center of pile was calculated. The main findings were as follows. Change values of Mixture Compaction Pile's SRR according to granular materials showed similar patterns and stiffness of the composite soil is increased depending on the replacement ratio so SRR showed decreased patterns. Especially, when the replacement ratio is in 20~40%, it increase significantly. When the replacement ratio is over 40%, it increase slowly. When considering the economics, 30~40% replacement ratio is appropriate.

The tendency of more longer span length being required economical in railway bridges is studying about PSC I shaped girder. In this case, it is important to analyze and choose the effective girder section for stiffness of bridge. This study investigates the dynamic properties and safety of PSC I shaped girder being used wide upper flange whose selection based on radii and efficiency factor of flexure for railway bridge in different span type. In addition, 40m PSC Box girder bridge adopted in Honam high speed railway is further analyzed to compare dynamic performance of PSC I shaped girder railway bridge with same span length. Time history response is acquired based on the mode superposition method. Static analysis is also analyzed using standard train load combined with the impact factor. Consequently, the result met limit values in every case including vertical displacement, acceleration and distort.

In this study, it is describe to an optimization analysis process for the weight reduction of the voltage converter in the electric vehicle charging systems. The optimization design is a technique that finds the optimal material distribution under a given material quantity constraint by combining the design sensitivity with the material properties and the mathematical optimization. Among the topology optimization, a lightweight design is performed by a solid isotropic material with penalization with simple formula and well-convergence. The lightweight design consists of three steps. As a first step, a finite element model for the basic design of the on-board voltage converter was constructed and static analysis was performed on the load. In the second step, the optimum shape is obtained for the lightweight by performing the topology optimization using the solid isotropic material with penalization applying the stiffness coefficient of the isotropic material to the static analysis result. As a final step, impact analysis was performed by applying a half-sinusoidal pulse shape impact load which satisfies the impact test standard of the vehicle-mounted part with respect to the optimum shape. In the topology optimization, the design domain was defined as the mounting bracket area, and the design technology was finally achieved by optimizing the mounting bracket to achieve a weight reduction of 20% over the basic design.
In this study, we investigated the separability of vanadium and tungsten from spent SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalyst leach solution by reduction of vanadium and solvent extraction using Alamine 336 and conducted experiments to optimize process conditions. It is difficult to separate vanadium and tungsten due to their similar chemical behavior, but tungsten can be selectively extracted from acidic solution when vanadium extraction is prevented by reducing anionic pentavalent vanadium to cationic tetravalent vanadium. The results showed that NaHSO3 was most suitable as a reducing agent, and the extraction efficiency of vanadium decreased and the separation efficiency increased as the amount of reducing agent added, reaction time, and temperature increased. When reducing NaHSO3 1.5 eq, 60 min, and 60℃, which are optimal conditions of reduction, vanadium and tungsten were effectively separated with vanadium extraction efficiency of 5.8%, tungsten extraction efficiency of 99%, and separation factor of vanadium and tungsten of 7,564.
