For the connections between modular units in modular buildings, the bolted joints with connector plates are used commonly. The strength of structure is determined by the weakest part of structure and the connections may be weaker than the members being joined. Therefore, to check the safety of modular building, the structural performance of connections between modular units as well as that of beam-to-column connections should be evaluated. In this study, the behavior of module to module connection with straight and cross shaped connector plates is investigated by lateral cyclic tests according to KBC2009 0722.2.4 which shall be conducted by controlling the story drift angle in the width and the longitudinal direction respectively. All of test results generally show the stable ductile behavior up to 0.04rad drift levels and the tests in longitudinal direction show a superior energy dissipation per cycle in each of the load steps. However, the straight shaped connector plates have the degradation of stiffness with cyclic loading and the larger drift angle of column than the cross shaped connector plates.

In this study, experimental research was carried out to investigate the seismic and structural performance of precast concrete exterior beam-column joints using bolt type connection and prestressing method. A total of five full-scale exterior beam-column joints were constructed and tested under reversed cyclic loading, controlled by displacement. Results of the test are as follows: Energy dissipation capacity and pinching phenomenon of PC beam-column joints showed disadvantageous behavior compared to RC beam-column joints. However, drift capacity of the PC joint was excellent. Also, yield mechanism concentrated on embedded nuts was suitable as an exterior beam-column joint of lateral load resistance frame. Additional application of prestressing method was also very effective to control excessive pinching and cracking in the joint region, and thus improved an overall seismic performance of the PC joint.

A series of forced vibration tests and ambient vibration measurement was conducted on a four-story reinforced concrete building damaged in the 1994 Northridge earthquake. Both low amplitude broadband and moderate amplitude harmonic excitation were applied using a linear shaker and two eccentric mass shakers, respectively, and ambient vibrations were measured before and after each forced vibration test. Accelerations, interstory displacements, and curvature distributions were monitored using accelerometers, LVDTs and concrete strain gauges. Natural frequencies and the associated mode shapes fur the first 7 modes were identified. Fundamental frequencies determined from the eccentric mass shaker tests were 70% to 75% of the values determined using ambient vibration data, and 92% to 93% of the values determined using the linear shaker test data. Larger frequency drops were observed in the NS direction of the building, apparently due to damage that was induced during the Northridge earthquake.

In this study, the seismic performance of the Buckling Restrained Knee Bracing (BRKB) system was evaluated through a pin-connected one-bay, one-story frame. The BRKB system developed in this study was composed of a steel plate as a load-resisting core member and two channel sections to restrain local and global buckling of the core plate. The main purpose of the BRKB system is to restrengthen/rehabilitate old low- and mid-rise RC buildings, which, it is assumed, were designed with non-seismic designs and details. The main variables for the test specimens were the size of the core plates and the stiffeners, and the condition of the end plates. The test results showed that the size of the core plate, which was the main element of the load-resisting member, was the most important parameter in achieving a ductile behavior under tension as well as compression until the maximum displacement exceeds twice the design drift limit.
This paper summarizes the seismic performance of two shear walls with different reinforcement details in boundary elements. One is a special shear wall designed by KBC2009 and the other is a shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements, which is a newly proposed type of special shear wall. Experimental tests under cyclic reversed loading were carried out with two 2/3 scale shear walls which were modelled from the lower part of seismic-resisting shear wall in 22-stories wall-slab apartment building. The experimental results show that seismic performance of shear wall with improved reinforcement details was almost similar to that of special shear wall with respect to the moment-drift ratio. However, energy dissipation capacity and ductility were slightly different. Also, shear wall with improved reinforcement details in boundary elements satisfied the inter-story drift limit of 1.5% from KBC2009.

In order to analyze the lateral-load resisting capability according to the core locations, three-dimensional structural analyses were performed for 20-story buildings with symmetric plan. Four analytical models for a center core, a single-axial eccentric core, and a double-axial eccentric core were constructed, and eigenvalue analyses, wind-load analyses, and earthquake-load analyses were performed. Torsion did not occur in the central core building, but the bending and torsion occurred in combination with the arrangement of the eccentric core, and the lateral-load resisting capability was degraded. The change in the wind load according to the eccentric core was small, but the maximum lateral displacement was found to increase greatly by the eccentric arrangement of the core. In addition, in case of the eccentric core, the seismic load was slightly reduced compared to the center core due to the decrease in the lateral stiffness, but it was found that the maximum story drift ratio increased significantly due to the torsional effect. Based on these results, the structural behavior according to the position of the core can be clearified and used as a guideline for core locations in the planning and design stage.
Recently in Korea, researches on seismic analyses for high-rise buildings in a large city have been increasing because earthquakes have occurred. However, the ground conditions are not included in most of seismic researches and analyses on a high-rise building. Also the influence of the predominant period of a seismic wave is not considered in reality. Therefore, in this study, the influence of the predominant period of a seismic wave on the dynamic behavior of high-rise buildings was analyzed based on the complete system model which can consider the grounds. For this purpose, 2D dynamic analyses based on a linear time history analysis were performed using MIDAS GTS NX, a finite-element based program. Dynamic behavior was analyzed in terms of horizontal displacements, drift ratios, bending stresses, and building weak zones. As a result, in overall, the dynamic response of a high-rise building become bigger as the predominant period of a seismic wave become longer. It was also found that the predominant period had a greater influence than other parameters, ground conditions and peak ground acceleration.
Recently, earthquakes have occurred in our country and seismic stability of high-rise buildings in large cities is being a growing interest and thus the related studies have been increased. Also the grounds are considered indirectly in most of seismic designs and analyses and seismic researches based on 3D dynamic analysis are insufficient. In this study, therefore, 2D and 3D dynamic analyses were performed based on the SSI complete model including grounds and the behavior was compared and analyzed. For dynamic modeling, linear time history analyses were performed by using MIDAS GTS NX. For this purpose, a high-rise building was assumed to be constructed on top of the bedrock and surrounded by a surface layer. A sensitivity analysis was performed with the selected parameters. The dynamic behavior was compared and analyzed in terms of horizontal displacements, drift ratios, bending stresses, and weak parts. In most cases, 2D dynamic behavior was calculated to be larger than 3D's and thus it shows more conservative results with increasing number and size of weak parts.

In this paper, the optimization of direct design system of steel frames by genetic algorithm involving advanced analysis are performed. For the analysis of steel frames advanced analysis accounting for geometric nonlinearity and material nonlinearity are executed. The genetic algorithm was used as optimization technique. The weight of structures is treated as the objective function. The constraint functions are defined by load-carrying capacities, deflections, inter-story drifts, and ductility requirement. The effectiveness of the proposed method are verified by comparing the results of the proposed method with those of other method.
This study is intended to predict the seismic behavior of the down-scaled 3-story steel frame structures subjected to the real ground motion, and evaluate their structural damage through advanced finite element (FE) analysis results. The FE frame models are designed by considering the effect of the soft story. In addition, the effect of structural asymmetry is also taken into consideration during the nonlinear dynamic analyses. After observing the analysis results, it is reconfirmed that the damage of the steel frame building under the ground motion should be governed by the soft story column rather than the structural mass asymmetry.
