The prediction of bone strength by ultrasound velocity and broadband ultrasound attenuation was examined. Ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation were measured for sixty specimens of human trabecular bone. Samples were divided into two equal groups and loaded in compression at the strain rates of $0.0004\;s^{-1}$ and of $0.08\;s^{-1}$. The ultimate strength was determined for each specimen. Specimens tested at $0.08\;s^{-1}$ had a mean value of strength 63% higher than the specimens tested at $0.0004\;s^{-1}$. Ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation were significantly associated with compressive strength at both strain rates. Mechanical strength was also correlated strongly with a linear combination of ultrasound velocity and broadband attenuation for both the low and high loading rates. The use of ultrasound parameters may provide good clinical means for assessing the resistance of trabecular bone to both low and high energy trauma.

Alternating magnetic field was used for detection of surface flaws on nonmagnetic and magnetic metallic specimens. The nondestructive sensor probe was composed of the planar coil with inductive magnetic thin film yoke as a sensing component and a single straight typed exciting coil. The planar inductive coil sensor with magnetic yoke was fabricated by sputtering, electroplating, dry etching and photolithography process. The alternative currents with the range of 0.1A to 1.0A (0.7 MHz to 1.8 MHz) were applied to the exciting coil. The specimens were prepared with the slit shaped artificial surface flaws (minimum depth and width; 0.5 mm) on metallic plate (Al; nonmagnetic metal and FeC; magnetic metal). The detected signal for the positions and shapes of surface flaws on specimens were obtained with high sensitivity and high signal to ratio. The measured output signals by the non-contacted scanning on surface of FeC specimen with micron-sized crack were converted to the images of the flaws. And these results were compared with the optical images, respectively.
A new ultrasonic test method is proposed to obtain elastic constants of unidirectional composite materials nondestructively. In the proposed test method, only longitudinal transducers are used to measure wave velocities by through-transmission method. An aluminum wedge and a flat aluminum rectangular block are placed on each side of the test specimen. Oblique incident longitudinal wave is transmitted from a wedge to the specimen and the mode conversions are occurred sequentially at two interfaces between the specimen and aluminium. Measuring wave velocities converted to longitudinal waves in the rectangular block give all information to determine elastic constants of the composites. In order to determine shear stiffness coefficients, transverse wave velocity is measured indirectly from received longitudinal wave. Effects of anisotropy on waves are also considered in this study.
In this paper, the variation of mechanical properties of T800 carbon/epoxy composites according to the forming pressure, which was referred to previous studies on a filament winding process, were investigated. The specimens of all the tests were fabricated by an autoclave de-gassing molding process controlling forming pressure (absolute pressures of 0.1MPa, 0.3MPa, 0.7MPa including vacuum) and water jet cutting after fabricating composite laminates. Various tensile tests were performed for in-plane properties and interlaminar properties were also measured by using Iosipescu test jig. Fiber volume fraction was measured to correlate the property variation and the forming pressure. This properties are expected to be utilized in the design of Type III pressure vessel for hydrogen vehicles which uses the same carbon fiber (T800 carbon fiber) for the filament winding process.

In this paper, we present an indirect method of elastic modulus measurement for various lamination layers formed on polymer-based compliant substrates. Although the elastic modulus of every component is crucial for mechanically reliable microelectronic devices, it is difficult to accurately measure the film properties because the lamination layers are hardly detached from the substrate. In order to resolve the problem, 3-point bending test is conducted with a film-substrate specimen and area transformation rule is applied to the cross-sectional area of the film region. With known substrate modulus, a modulus ratio between the film and the substrate is calculated using bending stiffness of the multilayered specimen obtained from the 3-point bending test. This method is verified using electroplated copper specimens with two types of film-substrate structure; double-sided film and single sided film. Also, common dielectric layers, prepreg (PPG) and dry film solder resist (DF SR), are measured with the double-sided specimen type. The results of copper (110.3 GPa), PPG (22.3 GPa), DF SR (5.0 GPa) were measured with high precision.
We fabricated rod-like poly(lactic acid)(PLA) specimens through applying various methods of equal-channel angular extrusion(ECAE) process and investigated the change of thermal and mechanical properties of specimens before and after each ECAE process. Combining three re-injection routes(A, BC, and C) and three pass counts(1, 2 and 4) allowed us to fabricate 7 different PLA specimens. Thermal properties of each specimen were measured by both differential scanning calorimeter and thermo-gravimetric analyzer. Shear strains of each specimen with respect to applied loads were measured by indentation hardness tester. Field emmision scanning electron microscopy was used to observe internal microstructure of cross-section of each specimen. The observed microstructures qualitatively supported the explanation of hardness test results. Among 7 specimens, PLA-P2A showed the biggest shear strain probably due to its dense microstructure.
This paper visualizes the full-field permittivity distribution at the standard specimens having known electromagnetic characteristics using a scanning free space measurement (SFSM) system. First, in the two Teflon specimens with different thicknesses, the real and loss tangent of permittivity could be measured and the results agreed to the theoretical and other measurement values. Then the system has been applied to Glass/epoxy and visualized different permittivity distribution depending on the material kind. Therefore, this approach will overcome the point measurement limitation of FSM and can be used for even sub-structural full-field electromagnetic evaluation of stealth and radome structures.
