  • In this study, hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) plating wastewater in strong acidic condition was treated by reduction and alkalization. Ferrous sulfate ($FeSO_4$), known to reduce Cr(VI) to Cr(III) rapidly at acidic pH, was used as a reductant of Cr(VI). The optimum reduction condition of Cr(VI) was observed at iron to chromium dose ratio of 3:1 by mole concentration. The precipitation of Cr(III) as $Cr(OH)_3$, was achieved by the pH adjustment in the limestone aeration bed. The precipitates were removed less than the upper limit of chromium for effluent at pH over 5.0. The continuous removal of Cr(VI) was performed using the process consisting of reduction vessel, limestone aeration bed, and sedimentation tank coupled with metal screen membrane. As pH was maintained around 5.0 in the limestone aeration bed, insoluble chromic hydroxide flocs was formed continuously. Most chromic hydroxide flocs were filtered by the metal screen membrane with 1450 mesh size, and the treated water to meet the upper limits of chromium for effluent (Cr Conc. 0.25~0.90 mg/l) was obtained in 30 minutes. Periodic backwashing decreased the fouling on the membrane rapidly.

  • In this study, we analyzed the operational characteristics of a 0.25 MW methanation pilot plant. Isothermal reactor controled the heat released from methanation reaction by saturated water in shell side. Methanation process consisting of isothermal reactor and adiabatic reactor had advantages with no recycle compressor and more less reactors compared with methanation process with only adiabatic reactors. In case that $H_2$/CO ratio of syngas was under 3, carbon deposition occurred on catalyst in tube side of isothermal reactor and the pressure of reactors increased. In case that $H_2$/CO ratio was maintained around 3, no carbon deposition on catalyst in tube side of isothermal reactor was found by monitoring the differential pressure of reactors and by measuring the differential pressure of several of tubes filled with catalyst before and after operating. It was shown that CO conversion and $CH_4$selectivity were over 99, 97%, respectively, and the maximum $CH_4$productivity was $695ml/h{\cdot}g-cat$.

  • This study aims to examine the modified $A^2/O$ process is useful to reduce the environmental pollution caused by nutrient in wastewater. Specific results are as follows: The removal rate was evaluated at each time period, ie., 18h, 8h, 6h, and 3h after the reaction started. The anoxic rate was more than 94-97% from 18h to 6h but was less than 50% before 6h. Thus, the test of nitrification was done using 6h as the optimal anoxic retention time and the aerobic retention time set at 24h. When the flow change was 1:1, the average ammonia concentration inputted was $30mg/{\ell}$. Returned top nitric acid solution and the concentration of ammonia solution falling into the anoxic reactor was about 50% of the initial concentration, and the flow change was 1:2, the concentration of ammonia falling into the anoxic reactor was about 62% of that of influxed ammonia. And the results of this study showed that the nitrogen removal rate can be improved by inputting untreated nitric acid and changing the flow of top nitrate solution using the modified $A^2/O$ method.

  • We made $(1-x)BCB-xBNT(BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12})$ (x=20, 30, 40, 50 vol%) composite thick film with a high dielectric constant and low loss by the hand casting method. Dielectric constant and dielectric loss of prepared thick film are measured at 1MHz and curing behavior of the film are observed through thermal analysis such as DSC. We investigated the effect of contents of BNT filler and curing behavior of film on dielectric properties of BCB-BNT composite. Dielectric constant increased with increasing BNT filler from 20 to 50 vol% and dielectric loss ($tan{\delta}$) decreased with increasing BNT filler. Dielectric constant and loss ($tan{\delta}$) of composite material was not nearly dependent on the curing behavior. But as a result of TCC (Temperature Characteristics of Coefficient) decreased with increasing the curing temperature, we confirmed that the curing of these composite system is most stable above $250^{\circ}C$.

  • Manufacturing conventional column base plate requires much manpower and time. In this research, a new method for constructing column base plate is introduced to improve on conventional methods through the use ofcast steel that is available for adjusting base plate thickness and enlarging base plate stiffness. The main purposes include reducing welding work, enlarging base plate stiffness, and clarifying the stress flow. Also, construction convenience and improvement in quality can be expected. For developing this cast steel base plate, test specimens of conventional and cast steel base plates are made and tested to analyze strength and stiffness. Also, the efficiency for long-term use is checked by fatigue tests. From these comparative tests, cast steel base plates have the same strength and stiffness as conventional base plates.

  • The low-flow grouting injection technique, the target construction method for this study, is a method of pouring mortar into the ground by non-emission replacement principle, which can be expected to increase the density of the ground, and, in some cases, be used as a base file using the strength of the high injection solids, along with low noise, low pollution, and high durability. To verify that the dynamic characteristics of the ground are improved by the low-flow injection technique, the test work was conducted on the site and physical tests were performed, and the quality of the improvement formed in the ground was verified through the indoor test on the core and core recovery rate was analyzed. The density logs test layer calculated the volume density of the ground layer by using the Compton scattering of gamma-rays, and the sonic logs was tested on the ground around the drill hole using a detector consisting of sonar and receiver devices inside the drill hole. As a result of the measurement of the change in physical properties (density and sonic logs) before and after grouting, both properties were basically increased after infusion of grout agent. However, the variation in density increase was greater than the increase in speed after grouting, and the ground density measurement method was thought to be effective in measuring the fill effect of the filler. Strength and core recovery rates were measured from specimens taken after the age of 28 days, and the results of the test results of the diffusion and strength test of the improved products were verified to satisfy the design criteria, thereby satisfying the seismic performance reinforcement.

  • Hydrophobic porous PVDF hollow fiber membranes for Membrane Distillation (MD) were fabricated by a combination of thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) and stretching. The purpose of this study is to investigate the shape and operating conditions of the module and the effect of piping size on parallel connection. In the optimization experiment of the vacuum membrane distillation module, the flux decreased as the packing density and length of the membrane in the module increased. When the module was connected vertically, it was confirmed that the nearest to the inlet of the vacuum port was the highest flux. In selecting the size of the header pipe of the module, it was confirmed that the maximum flux is shown when the inner diameter area of the hollow fiber membrane and the inner diameter area of the header pipe are the same. Also, it is necessary to find the optimal linear velocity because the higher the linear velocity in the module, the higher the flux, but the pressure acting on the module also increases proportionally.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the deformation of packaging materials used for ready-to-eat (RTE) foods after the retort process and microwave heating. From the multilayer films consisting of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polyamide (PA), and cast polypropylene (CPP) in a stand-up pouch form used for RTE foods, some deformation of the CPP layer, which was in direct contact with the food, was observed after the retort process and microwave heating. The damage was more severely caused by microwave heating than by the retort process. This may be attributed to diverse factors including the non-uniform heating in a microwave oven, the sorption of oil into the packaging film, and the different characteristics of food components such as viscosity, salt and water content. The development of heat-resistant packaging materials and systems suitable for microwave heating of RTE foods is required for the safety of consumers.

  • These studies were carried out to investigate the possibility on the agricultural utilization of lake sediment collected in the Daecheong Lake. Several parameters to estimate the degree of maturity of compost by windrow system were tested during a 50 day periods, and the results were as follows : During the composting of Daecheong Lake sediment, C/N ratio decreased gradually from 18.9 at the beginning to 13.1 at the final, while CEC increased from 33.5me/100g to 62.5me/100g. The temperature of lake sediment pile was the highest as $52^{\circ}C$ at 15th day and then decreased slowly until $30^{\circ}C{\sim}40^{\circ}C$ after 50 days. The results may be suggested that Daecheong Lake sediment compost reaches an acceptable level of stability after about 50 days. In order to know the effect of the Lake sediment and its compost on the growth of tomato(Lycopersicum esculentum M.), pot experiments were performed. The appiication of lake sediment(AS) itself, sediment organic fertilizer(SOF), and NPK mixed with sediment organic fertilizer(NSF) was more effective for tomato plant height, fresh and dry weight, and chlorphyll content than those of control treatment. Also, the lake sediment compost improved the physico-chemical properties of soil such as pH, total carbon, total nitrogen, available phosphorous and CEC.

  • Rock composition of the Hwangsang-dong Granite Standing Sculptured Buddha (Treasure No. 1122) in the Kumi City is biotite-hornblende granodiorite which consists of about 30 pieces of individual rock blocks of same compositions. However, the cap rocks is pebble-bearing coarse sandstone. Rock blocks of the Standing Buddha and surrounding out crops occur well developed several joint systems of $N25^{\circ}$ to $45^{\circ}W$ strike and nearly vertical (70 to $85^{\circ}SE$) dipping. Rock blocks of the Standing Buddha showed vertical, horizontal and oblique joints, and those blocks are well supported by individual blocks. However, the junction part of the blocks are under dangerous situation due 10 seriously mechanical and chemical weathering. Host rock of the Standing Buddha belongs to the HW grade, therefore mostly rock-forming minerals of the granodiorite Standing Buddha altered with clay and iron hydroxide minerals by mineralogical and chemical weathering. Near surface of the Standing Buddha show spore and mycelium of green algaes, and a joint plane alive with weeds. We suggest that if structural stability for the Standing Buddha remove essentially a unstable rock blocks from the main body, and the main body necessitate supporting by rock bolting method because of repeated unstability and minimizing stress to the rock blocks. For the opened joint planes, fractured surface and alive weeds will attempt to fill in a petro-epoxy, petro-filler and biochemical treatments for the algaes, and ground water curtain and wall seems to be necessary for water flow and diminishing humidity of the Standing Buddha.
