  • In order to prevent chestnut from damaged by the chestnut gall wasp, Dryocosmus kuriphilus, a sprinkler system was installed on the chestnut orchard. Such a test was conducted at Sanchung-gun, Kyeongnam province, Korea in 2003 and 2004. Insecticide of carbaryl 50% WP, x1,500 was sprayed at every day and two-day intervals during the period of D. kuriphilus adult occurrence by sprinkler system. The chestnut gall wasps generally emerged for about 35 days from the middle June to the middle July, and peak emergence was 5 days of early July. Crown application of carbaryl by sprinkler system was found to be highly effective for control of the chestnut gall wasp. Gall formation rate of chestnut were 3.0 and 12.8% on average with crown insecticide spraying at every day and two-day intervals, while 82.9% when not treated. Control effectiveness of this insecticide spraying was 96.4% and 84.6%, respectively.

  • Experiments were conducted to evaluate the efficacy of the application of low concentration insecticides by sprinkler system for control of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplasis japonensis, by killing the adults emerging and copulating near the ground. For ground spray, 2 insecticides of fenitrothion and deltamethrin, dilutions of $2,000{\times}$ and $3,000{\times}$ deltamethrin, and 3 spray intervals of 1-3 day were tested at the peak time of adult emergence during the day time. The results are as follows ; 1. Ground spray of fenitrothion 50% EC and deltamethrin 1% EC were found to be highly effective for control of the pine needle gall midge. Average gall formation by fenitrothion, deltamethrin and untreated ones were 3.40%, 5.23% and 45.69%, respectively ; control value of both insecticides exceeded 88%. 2. As a ground spray of deltamethrin 1% EC, dilution $2,000{\times}$ was significantly different from $3,000{\times}$ in gall formation rates. Average gall formation of $2,000{\times}$ plots and $3,000{\times}$ treated ones were 5.23% and 18.00% ; control values were 89.44% and 63.66%, respectively. 3. Diurnal treatment of ground spray was found to be highly effective for control of pine needle gall midge. 4. In particular, control by ground application of dilutions $2,000{\times}$ and $3,000{\times}$ of deltamethrin is suggested because it does not have an adverse effect on arthropods of the ground surface such as ants and spiders.

  • The frequency of gall formation by pine needle gall midges ranged from 35% to 40% in both P. densiflora and P. thunbergii species. However, there was no indication of gall development from larva on both P. virgiana and P. rigida species suggesting that some specific compounds might play role in preventing gall formation of larva. The susceptible species to pine needle gall midges including P. densiflora and P. thunbergii contained a little salicylic acid under the free phenolic compound conditions while the resistant species against such insects including P. virginiana and P. rigida species contained about 37ppm to 50ppm of salicylic acid. Thus, this compound might have important roles in insect resistance. The contents of internal salicylic acid in the needles of susceptible pines increased from 9.5ppm to 20.6ppm after direct external irrigation of salicylic acid solution and flour treatment on roots. As a result, the frequency of gall formation decreased dramatically 17~19 times lower when compared with that of control. According to our results, the application of salicylic acid for effective prevention against insect damages should be performed before hatching eggs. The frequency of gall formation in the hybrid pines of P. thunbergii(susceptible) and P. virginiana(resistant) showed approximately 24% as average value of those in both species. In the case of specific individuals, it ranged from 2.8% to 11.5% in hybrids of both species. Therefore, effective production of insect resistant pines can be obtained through hybrids by crossing between susceptible and resistant species including P. thunbergii and P. virginiana by increasing internal salicylic acid contents of the needles.

  • The present experiments were carried out to reduce the population density of adult pine gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensi,s UCHIDA et INOUYE, by means of spray the sticky agent C-4, on the ground, herbacious plantation and foliar leaf of pine trees at Sanbonli,. Anyang, Kyungido. And also the 3 periods of treatment, such as before 2 weeks( I ), before 1 week (II) from the peak emergence period and peak emergence period (III) were applied. The experimental results obtained were as follows. (1) The formula of selected sticky agent C-4 was $70\%$ of castor oil, $25\%$ of damar resin and $5\%$ of carnauba wax, and it showed the best both on stickiness and duration, and lower phytotoxicity to the host plant. (2) The reduction of population densities of the adult PGM were $68\%$ and 78f: in the G-I and G-II treatment plot respectively, which compared to control, on the ground spray. (3) And the reduction of population densities were $63\%$ and about $90\%$ in the P-I and P-II plot respectively when the agent was sprayed on the herbacious plantation. (4) The rates of gall formation were $32.8\%,\;40.8\%\;and\;59.4\%$ in the spray plots of F-I, F-II, and F-III respectively, and there was no significant difference among the upper, middle and lower parts of the treated host plant in the rates of gall formation. (5) The effective stage of sticky agent application were considered as before one week from the peak emergence period in tile all types of treatment.

  • Abamectin 1.8% EC and emamectin benzoate 2.15% were evaluated the simultaneous control effect of both insect pests on black pine (Pinus thunbergii) against Thecodiplosis japonensis and Matsucoccus thunbergianae. Abamectin 1.8% EC was highly effective against T. japonensis and M thunbergianae, however, emamectin benzoate was highly effective against only M. thunbergianae when abamectin and emamectin benzoate were applied through trunk injection against T. japonensis and M thunbergianae at the rate of 1 ml per cm in diameter of breast height. The rate of gall formation of T. japonensis was 0% at the applied year, but 85% at the following year. However, the rate of gall formation was over 90% at the treatment of emamectin benzoate showing no difference compared with control. Abamectin 1.8% EC and emamectin benzoate 2.15% showed high control efficacy representing 89.1% and 91.4% against M. thunbergiana, respectively.

  • The concentration of amino acids, total nitrogen, trehalose, lipids and the activities of respiratory, acid$\cdot$alkaline phosphatase, glutamic oxalozcetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase during larval stage in Pine leaf gall midge, Thecodiplosis janensis Uchi. et Inouye were measured using Paper chromatographic method, micro-Kjeldahl method, Thin layer chromatographic method, Warburg's manometric method, Bessey-Lowry method and Reitman-Frankel method, respectively. Healthy specimens )yore chosen as samples of each larval stages; alrva in gall and larva in soil. Amino acids present in the alcoholic extracts were alanine, glutamic acid, glycine, histidine, methionine, proline, threonine, tryptophan and valine. The total nitrogen concentration reached to 31.348mg/g during the larva in gall and the larval stage in soil of the value was decreased to 29.027mg/g. The hemolymph sugar, trehalose value for larva in soil was about two times of the value for larva in gall. Total lipid, phospholipid, monoacylglycerol, triacylglycerol, sterol, free fatty acid and ester cholesterol were identified at larval stages in gall and soil. Triacylglycerol concentration reached high level in contrast with other lipid contents during larvae in gall and larva in soil. Free fatty acid, sterol except decreased lipids during larval stage in soil. Endogenous respiration, succinate of respiratory activities decreased at larval stage in soil compare with larva in gall. The activities of acid phosphatase decreased larval stage in soil but the activities of alkaline phosphatase increased remarkably. The activities of glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase and glutamic pyruvic transaminase reached high level of the larva in gall.

  • As a series of studies on the behaviour of Pine gallmidge (Theccdiplosis japonensis Uehida ei Inoaye), the season of the larval hibernation in winter as well as the season of the attack of adults on pine needles in the vicinity of Seoul were observed, and following results were obtained. 1. The larvae get out of the galls and fall into the ground for the hibernation commencing from the end of September and finishing by the end of January of the next year. 2. About 76% of the whole larvae fell down during the month of November. 3. The frequency and the duration of raining mainly influenced the larval falling into the ground but temperature, humidity and the quantity of rainfall was not likely influence upon it. 4. As many as 47,000 larvae were counted per 1.5 square meter of the ground under the crown of the damaged trees. 5. When pine needles were isolated by fine linen-net-bag to keep the needles from the oviposition of the adults of the insect, at six different season; -i.e. 30th, May, 6th, 10th, 15th, 25th, and 30th June, the percentages of the damage were 80%, 50%, 36%, 19%, 20% and 1% respectively, while the damage of the control was 91%.

  • Monoterpenes, phenolic substances, growth substances and total nitrogen from normal needles and infested needles attacked by Thecodiplosis japonensis were compared for Pinus densiflora, Pinus thunbergii and Pinus rigida. The results obtained in this study were as follows: 1. Major monoterpene components in P. densiflora needles were ${\beta}$-phellandrene, ${\alpha}$-pinene and those in P. rigida needles were ${\beta}$-pinene and ${\alpha}$-pinene. In P. rigida resistant to this insect, infested needles showed higher ${\alpha}$-pinene, ${\beta}$-pinene and myrcene but lower camphene, limonene and ${\beta}$-phellandrene than normal needles. 2. Orcinol, catechol ferulic acid, salicylic acid and five unknowns were detected in P. rigida needles whereas orcinol, catechol, ferulic acid and four unknowns in P. densiflora needles. 3. Tryptophan, a precursor of IAA, was detected in larvae and also in gall tissues of both P. densiflora and P. thunbergii needles. This fact shows that growth substances may involve in gall formation by Thecodiplosis japonensis. 4. Total nitrogen contents per unit needle weight were neither significantly different between P. densiflora and P. rigida, nor between normal and infested needles.

  • 9 species of parasitoids emerged from chestnut gall samples collected at Chunchon, Kangwon in June to July 1995 - 1997, and 8 species emerged from gall samples at the 5 investigation sites in December 1997. The primary parasitoids among them were Torymus sinensis, Torymus geranii, Sycophila variegata, Megastigmus nipponicus, Megastigmus maculipennis, Eurytoma brunniventris, Ormyrus flavitibialis, Ormyrus punctiger, Eupelmus urozonus, while the secondary parasitoids were Torymus geranii, Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Eupelmus sp., Eurytoma setigera, Ormyrus punctiger. Torymus sp.. Some of secondary parasitoids were facultative hyperparasitoids, parasitizing the gall wasp as well as primary parasitoids, Among these natural enemies, Torymus sinensis was dominant at all sites. At Chunchon, the rate of gall formation showed decreasing tendency as the function of generation and the parasitism rate of Torymus sinensis showed increasing tendency gradually. But the rate of parasitization of the secondary parasitoids(Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Torymus geranii, Ormyrus puntiger) ranged from 4.0% to 10.5%. The mortality was high during June to October which was immature stage of Torymus sinensis, and mainly caused by secondary parasitoids. Torymus sinensis emerged from April to May and the estimated dates of 50% emergence was 21st April. The estimated dates of 50% emergence for the other, Sycophila variegata, Eupelmus urozonus, Torymus geranii, and Ormyrus puntiger were 25th April, 30th April, 4th May, and 22nd May, respectively.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the ratio and number of the Rhus javanica gall formed by chinese sumac aphid, Scheleechtendalia chinensis, in several different conditions in which R. javanica lives. The density of 11 to 15-year-old R. javanica was more higher and the number of galls was also higher than 1 to 5- or over 16-year-old one at these sites. The formed gall according to four directions such as the East, West, South and North was founded the highest at the East and followed South, North, and West order. The formative rate of R. javanica gall did not differ in the mixture forest, and in the habitat having a heap of a little stone and mosses near a valley was better than in the site of road perimeter. Through an index of the gall diameter and the number of chinese sumac aphid, we evaluated the gall processing and development formed by the aphid. As the density of aphids increase, the size of the gall was also more plumped. The part of phyllotaxy of R. javanica gall in leaf and pinnate of was increased in the middle and upper part of terminal leaflet and leaflet was more occupied than wing. R. javanica which did not form a gall in natural environmental, formed gall by a artificial inoculation of S. chinensis. Some gall disappeared during a gall development from various environmental conditions.
