  • This study used HILS to test an expansion joint, which is vulnerable to the water hammer effect. The operation data for the HIL simulator was the length rate of the expansion joint by the water hammer, which was used for life prediction based on the vibration durability. For the vibration durability test, the internal pressure of the expansion joint was assumed to be a factor of the durability life, and the lifetime prediction model equation was obtained by curve fitting the lifetime data at each pressure. During the test, the major failure modes of crack and water leakage occurred on the surface of the bellows part. The lifetime prediction model typically follows an inverse power law model. The pressure is a stress factor, and the model is effective in only a specific environment. Therefore, another stress factor such as temperature will be added and considered for a mixed lifetime prediction model in the future.

  • Most of the landslides induced by rainfall in summer rainy season appear in the type of debris flow. Debris flow gives a lot of economic losses and human casualties due to high moving velocity and volume of debris flow. In order to analyze movement and deposition characteristics of debris flow, numerical analysis using FLO-2D program was conducted with various viscosities and yield stresses. As a result of numerical analysis, velocity and runout distance of debris flow decreased as its viscosity increased due to resisting force between particles of debris flow. Consequently, flow depth of debris flow increased and impact force decreased. Yield stress of debris flow affected its initiation and deposition characteristics. As yield stress increased, runout distance of debris flow decreased and its impact force increased. Based on the results of numerical analysis, it was found that velocity of debris flow mainly depended on viscosity, while deposition characteristics (runout distance, deposition width, deposition area) of debris flow depended on both viscosity and yield stress.

  • Hydraulic hoses are used as pipelines for transferring power from hydraulic systems in various machineries such as construction equipments, automobiles, and aircraft. Hydraulic hoses protect the system from vibration or impacts, and they are being used to transfer energy in all segments of the industry. In order to protect the system from various external environmental conditions, hydraulic hose assemblies must be able to withstand a wide range of temperatures and pressures, as well as variations in other factors. In previous studies, an acceleration model for the hydraulic hose assembly was developed by taking into account only one of the acceleration factors (temperature or pressure). Therefore, the objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive acceleration model that takes both temperature and pressure into consideration.

  • The Charpy and Izod impact tests are the most prevalent techniques used to characterize the effects of high impulse loads on ploymeric materials. An analysis method for rubber toughened PVC is suggested to evaluate critical dynamic strain energy release rates(G$\_$c/) from the Charpy impact energy measurements. An instrumented Charpy impact tester was used to extract ancillary information concerning fracture parameters in addition to total fracture energies and maximum critical loads. The dynamic stress intensity factor Kid was computed for varying amounts of rubber contents from the obtained maximum critical loads and also toughening effects were investigated as well.

  • The structure borne sound is one of the most important factor in building acoustics. Nevertheless, there is not yet sufficient knowledge to predict its behavior in preparing the acoustical design of a building. We are concerned with the concrete floating floor construction, which is one of the most promising ways to control floor impact sound. This study is to develop floating screeds isolated from the conventional concrete floor structures, to improve the concrete floor systems for the purpose of the good sound insulation performance which protects the propagation of the structure borne sound. Floor impact sound in many apartment house buildings and developed floating floors was measured, and we can save many floor impact sound data.

  • Vacuum interrupters that is used in various switchgear components such as circuit breakers, distribution switches, contactors, etc. spreads the arc uniformly over the surface of the contacts. The electrode of vacuum interrupters is used sintered Cu-Cr material satisfied with good electrical and mechanical characteristics. Because the closing velocity is 1-3m/s, the deformation of the material of electrodes depends on the strain rate and the dynamic behavior of the sintered Cu-Cr material is a key to investigate the impact characteristics of the electrodes. The dynamic response of the material at the high strain-rate is obtained from the split Hopkinson pressure bar test using cylinder type specimens. Experimental results from both quasi-static and dynamic compressive tests with the split Hopkinson pressure bar apparatus are interpolated to construct the Johnson-Cook equation as the constitutive relation that should be applied to simulation of the dynamic behavior of electrodes. To evaluate impact characteristic of a vacuum interrupter, simulation is carried out with five parameters such as initial velocity, added mass of a movable electrode, wipe spring constant, initial offset of a wipe spring and virtual fixed spring constant.

  • This paper describes a supersonic separation of air-launching rocket from the mother plane. Three dimensional Euler equations were numerically solved to analyze steady/unsteady state fluid flows. The results of simulation clearly demonstrate effect of shock-expansion wave interaction between the rocket and the mother plane. Moreover, important influential factors at separating stage of the rocket were extracted with a comprehensive analysis. Finally, from the consideration of supersonic-separation, a guideline to safety-separation is given to the design of supersonic air-launching rocket.

  • An efficient model for the dynamic analysis of caisson breakwaters under impulsive wave loadings is presented. The caisson structure is. regarded as a rigid body, and the rubble mound foundation is idealized as virtual added masses, springs, and dampers using the elastic half-space theory. The frequency-dependent hydrodynamic added mass and damping coefficients are considered by using the time memory functions and added mass at infinite frequency. To simulate the permanent sliding phenomenon of the caisson, the horizontal spring is modeled as a nonlinear spring with plastic behaviors. Comparisons with experimental results show that the present model gives fairly good results. Sensitivity analysis is performed for the relevant parameters affecting the dynamic responses of a caisson breakwater. Numerical experiments are also carried out to investigate the applicability to the prediction of permanent sliding distance and critical weight of the caisson.

  • After excavation or blasting, rock properties within an excavation damaged zone can be perpetually weakened on account of stress redistribution or blasting impact. In the present study, the excavation damaged zone is applied to a rock slope. The objective of this research is to compare the mechanical stability of the rock slope depending on the presence of the damaged zone using 2-dimensional modeling and analyze factors affecting factor-of-safety. From the modeling, it was founded that the mechanical stability of the rock slope is significantly dependent on the presence of the damaged zone. In particular, factor-of-safety with a consideration of the damaged zone decreased by approximately 49.4% in comparison with no damaged zone. Factor analysis by fractional factorial design was carried out on factor-of-safety. It showed that the key parameters affecting factor-of-safety are angle of the slope, cohesion, internal friction angle and height.

  • The reduction of the maximum acceleration which causes shock for a missile is very important to prevent abnormal operation of a missile and decrease size and cost of missile components. Because the maximum acceleration created by operation of an ejection gas generator occurs in the initial ejection stage, the design parameters which affect initial ejection stage were examined. The igniter and the nozzle closure were selected as design parameters of a gas generator. The maximum acceleration created by the gas generator was examined experimentally by changing of the design parameters. Finally the reduction effect of the maximum acceleration was compared quantitatively by static fire test of a gas generator. The maximum acceleration of the best model which was applied to each optimal design parameter was about 68% reduced than that of the reference model.
