  • An analysis program to predict the behavior of a concrete filled steel tube column (CFT) was developed. It considered confining effect, material nonlinearity, strain hardening of steel, and initial axial load. With the developed program, axial load-bending moment interaction analyses, moment-lateral displacement relation analyses, and lateral load-lateral displacement relation analyses were performed. For the verification of the developed program, analysis results were compared with the test results from the other researches. The verified results showed that the developed program predicted the behavior of the CFT column with agreeable accuracy. And they showed that it is necessary to consider the confining effect for the reasonable analysis of the CFT column. A simple parametric study was performed and it chose the strength of unconfined concrete and the thickness of a steel tube as the major parameters affecting the behavior of the CFT column. The parametric analysis results showed that the CFT column had higher strength and smaller ductility by increasing the strength of concrete. But the CFT column showed higher strength and larger ductility by increasing the thickness of the steel tube.

  • It has been reported that the length parameter of high strength bolts results in the variance in tensile loads. The required turn of nut for each length is specified in AISC RCSC specification. There is no specific regulation datum about the bolt length in the two national codes and specifications in Korea. Therefore this study focused on evaluating influence of the clamping torque subjected to length parameter of high strength bolts. Two types of high strength bolt specimens were manufactured and tested; High Strength Hexagon bolt specified in ASTM A490 and Torque Shear Bolt in KS B 2819. The length parameter ranged from 60mm(3d) to 140mm(7d). The torque, turn of nut, and the clamping force were analyzed to review whether length parameter affects on the required tensile strength. To evaluate the effects of the length parameter on the torque and turn of nut for the required strength and clamping force, statistical analysis was also carried out.

  • The parameters describing a complete hysteresis loop include pinch force, drift offset, effective stiffness, unloading and reloading trangential stiffness. Analytical equations proposed to quantify the nonlinear, inelastic behavior of reinforced shear walls can be used to predict these parameters as a function of axial load and drift ratio. For example, drift offset, effective stiffness, and first and second unloading and reloading tangential stiffness are calculated using equations obtained from test data for a desired drift ratio or ductility level. Pinch force can also be estimated for a given drift ratio and axial load. The effective virgin stiffness at the first yield and its post yield reduction can be estimated. The load deflection response of flexural reinforced concrete shear walls can now be estimated based on the effective wall stiffness that is a function of axial force and drift ratio.

  • During installation of face bolts, they are often deviated from the designed horizontal direction. In this study, a laboratory test and numerical analysis were conducted to examine the change of support effect by them. Also, the number of bolts to be added for achieving the designed support effect was considered. It was verified in this study that the horizontal installation is more effective. Under the test condition of this study, 1.5 bolts/section should be added in the face of which the installation density was 3 bolts/section when the bolts were installed with $R15^{\circ}$ angle from the horizontal position.

  • This paper presents a nonlinear finite element analysis procedure for the seismic performance assessment of deep beam-and-interior column joints. A computer program, named RCAHEST(Reinforced Concrete Analysis in Higher Evaluation System Technology), for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was used. Horizontal cyclic load tests were conducted to estimate the strength, ductility, and behavioral characteristics of deep beam-and-interior column joints. Experimental parameters are axial forces and amount of transverse reinforcement. The proposed numerical method for the seismic performance assessment of deep beam-and-interior column joints is verified by comparison of its results with reliable experimental results.

  • Three small scale hollow circular reinforced concrete columns(4.5 aspect ratio) were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. Diameter of section is 400 mm, hollow diameter is 200 mm. The selected test variable are transverse steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of spirals of all the columns is 0.302~0.604% in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to 45.9~91.8% of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by seismic concept. The final objectives of this study are to provide quantitative reference data and tendency for performance or damage assessment based on the performance levels such as cracking, yielding, steel fracture, etc. In this paper, describes mainly failure behavior, strength degradation behaviour, displacement ductility of circular reinforced concrete bridge columns with respect to test variables.

  • An investigation was conducted into the flexural behavior of earthquake damaged reinforced concrete columns repaired with carbon fiber sheets. Six column specimens were tested to failure under reversed cyclic loading. Two columns were specimens for control with no sheets and tested. These columns were repaired with carbon fiber sheets and retested to evaluate the effect of the confinement of the carbon fiber on the damaged column. Another two columns were repaired and tested with no pre-cyclic loading. The test specimens were designed to model single bent under a constant axial force with reversed cyclic lateral loading. Carbon fiber sheets were used to repair damaged concrete columns in the critically stressed areas near the column footing joint and the physical, mechanical properties of carbon fiber sheets are described. The performance of repaired columns in terms of their hysteretic response is evaluated and compared to those of the original columns. The results indicate that the repaire technique with carbon fiber sheets is highly effective. Both flexural strength and displacement ductility of repaired columns were higher than those of the original columns.

  • The peculiarity of end-expanded soil nailing method(EESNM) is in fixing the wedge-type steel body spreaded by collars and grouting its surroundings by cement milk within soils, after extending hole bottom over drilling hole diameter with top drill bit. The present study was done to establish the effect of this method. Laboratory model test were carried out to investigate the behavior characteristics with the performance of the pull-out test and failure experiment, after preparing soil test box having 1,300mm length, width 1,000mm, and height 1,100mm, and the same experimental condition was set up to compare with the general soil nailing method(GSNM). The pull-out force of about 23 percentage was increased, and the horizontal displacements 1.2 from 9.1 percentage in soil-nailed wall decreased in EESNM compare with GSNM. The axial force acting on nail increased considerably at load level over 7 ton in EESNM and 5 ton in GSNM. The predicted failure line from the maxima analyzed by axial tensile strain located at long distance from soil-nailed wall in EESNM. The EESNM demonstrated the superiority of reinforcement effect in comparison with GSNM from the results above mentioned.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the flexure-shear behavior of bridge columns under seismic loads. Four full scale circular reinforced concrete columns were tested under cyclic lateral load with constant axial load. The selected test variables are aspect ratio(1.825, 2.5, 4.0), transverse steel configuration, and longitudinal steel ratio. Volumetric ratio of transverse hoop of all the columns is 0.0023 in the plastic hinge region. It corresponds to $24\%$ of the minimum requirement of confining steel by Korean Bridge Design Specifications, which represent existing columns not designed by the current seismic design specifications or designed by limited ductility concept. The columns showed flexural failure or flexure-shear failure depending on the test variables. Failure behavior and seismic performance are investigated and discussed in this paper.

  • This study is performed to evaluate the flexural performance of reinforced concrete columns with electric arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates. Electric arc furnace slag is a by-product obtained from the process of refining scrap steel. The electric arc furnace slag can be used as a concrete aggregate, because it mainly consists of CaO and $SiO_2$, similar to natural rocks and minerals. Three rectangular columns with various types of aggregate were cast to test in flexure. All of the test specimens had a cross-section of $250{\times}250$mm and a height of 1,500 mm in test region. The specimens were designed to apply reversed cyclic antisymmetric moment and constant axial force. The experimental results showed that the specimens with electronic arc furnace oxidizing slag aggregates had superior flexural performance than the specimen with natural aggregates.
