  • Three-dimensional structural analysis system for nuclear containment building is presented in this paper. This system includes high-performance plate/shell elements as finite element library. It also adopts numerical modeling technique for unbonded tendon as well as bonded tendon in prestressed concrete structures. This system is constructed by connecting several in-house program to a commercial program DIANA, and then is capable of performing nonlinear analysis for ultimate pressure capacity of nuclear containment building. Finally, three-dimensional structural analysis of CANDU-type containment building is carried out in order to test the reliability of this system. These numerical results are compared with reference values, which obtained from axisymmetric structural analysis.

  • In this paper, radiation characteristics of the beating sound are analytically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell. The cylindrical shell isan efficient model to consider the beat characteristics of Korean bells. Slight asymmetry in Korean bells makes mode pair which has close frequency components and the interaction of each mode pair produces beating sound. Based on the analytical model, the radiated sound field is determined. Using the sound beat map, the beating sound vs. direction and distance is investigated. Finally, results of the theoretical method are compared with those of the boundary element method to verify the validity.

  • The purpose of this study is to ascertain the robustness of p-version model with hierarchic intergrals of Legendre shape functions in various applications including plane stress/strain, axisymmetric and shell problems. The most important symptoms of accuracy failure in modern finite elements are spurious mechanisms and a phenomenon known as locking which are exhibited for incompressible materials and irregular shapes which contain aspect ratios(R/t, a/b), tapered ratio(d/b), and skewness. The condition numbers and energy norms are used to estimate numerical errors, convergence characteristics and algorithmic efficiencies for verifying the aforementioned symptoms of accuracy failure. Numerical results from p-version models are compared with those from NASTRAN, SAP90, and Cheung's hybrid elements.

  • Combined analysis is required for the concrete dome and ring beam of containment structure due to the interaction in section forces. In this study, an efficient design procedure is proposed that can be used to determine the preliminary sections of the dome and ring beam as well as a proper level of prestress in the ring beam, prior to a detailed design. The procedure applies the membrane theory of the shell of revolution.

  • Shell structure are widely used in a variety of engineering application and mathematical solution of shell structures are available only for a few special cases. The solution of shell structure is more complicated when it has such condition as winker foundation, variable thickness and other problem. In this paper, a simple finite element method is presented for the analysis of axisymmetric several types of shell structure subjected to axisymmetric loads and having uniform and varying wall thickness on elastic foundation. The method is based on the analogy with a beam on elastic foundation (BEF), foundation stiffness matrix where the foundation modulus and beam flexural rigidity are replaced by appropriate parameters pertaining to the shell under considerations. The technique is attractive for implementation on a numerical solution by means of a computer program coded in FORTRAN language with a few elements. To demonstrate this fact, it gives good results which compare well with SAP2000.

  • A miniature metal bellows is used to minimize the excessive flow of the cryogenic gas in Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of metal alloy and its geometry is axisymmetric. The bellows is filled with high pressure gas. It contracts or expands in the axial direction for a wide change of temperature, because the pressure and volume inside the bellows must be satisfied with state equation of the gas. Therefore, in order to design the bellows in Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler, it is important to evaluate deformation of the bellows under internal pressure exactly. Considering geometric nonlinearity, deformations analysis of the bellows were obtained by a commercial finite element code ANSYS, The bellows was modeled by 3-node axisymmetric shell elements with reduced integration. Experiments were also performed to prove the validity of proposed numerical analysis. The results by numerical analysis and experiments were shown in good agreements.

  • Bellows is used to control temperature of a Joule-Thomson micro cryocooler. It is made of Nickelcobalt alloy that retains mechanical properties from cryogenic temperature to temperature of 570K. The geometry of bellows is an axisymmetric shell and Nitrogen with high pressure was charged at temperature of 293K. During cool-down process, the pressure and volume of Nitrogen are changed and must be satisfied with state equation. At cryogenic temperature, Nitrogen can exist as a part liquid and part vapor. Pressure-density-temperature behavior under this vaporliquid phase equilibrium is closely given by the Modified-Benedict-Webb-Rubin(MBWR) state equation. To evaluate deformation of bellows for temperature change, the numerical calculation of the volume within bellows and finite element analysis of bellows under internal pressure were iteratively performed until MBWR state equation is satisfied. The numerical results show that deformation of the bellows can be analyzed by the present method in a wide range of temperature including cryogenic temperature.

  • A bellows is an important temperature control component in a Joule-Thomson micro-cryocooler. It is designed using a very thin shell, and the inside of the bellows is filled with nitrogen gas. The bellows is made of a nickel-cobalt alloy that maintains its strength and elastic properties in a wide range of temperatures from cryogenic to $300^{\circ}C$. The pressure of the gas and the volume within the bellows vary according to the temperature of the gas. As a result, the bellows contracts or expands in the axial direction like a spring. To explore this phenomenon, the deformation of the bellows and its internal volume must be calculated iteratively under a modified pressure until the state equation of the gas is satisfied at a given temperature. In this paper, the modified Benedict-Webb-Rubin state equation is adopted to describe the temperature-volume-pressure relations of the gas. Experiments were performed to validate the proposed method. The results of a numerical analysis and the experiments showed good agreement.

  • The concrete containment structures have been widely used in nuclear power plants, LNG storage tanks, etc., due to their high safety and economic efficiency. The containment structure consists of a bottom slab, wall, ring beam and dome. The shape of the roof dome has a very significant effect on structural safety, the quantity of materials, and constructability; the thickness and curvature of the dome should therefore be determined to give the optimum design. The ring beam plays the role as supports for the dome, resulting in a minimized deformation of the wall. The main issues in designing the ring beam are the correct dimensions of the section and the prestress level. In this study, an efficient design procedure is proposed that can be used to determine an optimal shape and prestress level of the dome and ring beam. In the preliminary design stage of the procedure, the membrane theory of shells of revolution is adopted to determine several plausible alternatives which can be obtained even by hand calculation. Based on the proposed procedures, domes and ring beams of the existing domestic containment structures are analyzed and some improvements are discussed.

  • The behavior of a bellows for an electromagnetic control valve was investigated. The bellows consists of an outer metal bellows, inner spring, and metal caps. The bellows needs to have sensitive and precise motion against external loads and pressure loads in order to control the position of the valve accurately. The spring constant of the inner spring and load-displacement curve of the bellows set were measured using a test machine. The inner spring showed a linear relation between load and displacement. The bellows set showed small stiffness at small displacement, and then the stiffness slightly increased upon subsequent displacement. Based on the measured data, finite element analysis was performed. Axisymmetric conditions were applied, and shell elements were used. The effective material properties of the outer bellows material were extracted. Additional analysis was performed, and the behavior of the bellows was analyzed using the finite element model.
