  • A numerical procedure is described for predicting steady drift forces an multiple three-dimensional bodies of arbitrary shape freely floating in waves. The developed numerical approach is based on combination of a three-dimensional source distribution method, wave interaction theory art the far-field method using momentum theory. Numerical results are compared with the experimental or numerical ones, which are obtained in the literature, of steady drift forces on 33(3 by 11) floating composite vertical cylinders in waves. The results of comparison confirmed the validity of the proposed approach. Finally, the interaction effects are examined in the case of an array of 40(4 by 10) freely floating rectangular bodies in shallow water.

  • A study was carried out to investigate typical features of natural supercavitation generated behind axisymmetric bodies such as disk and cone shaped cavitators. Main focuses of the study were to observe formation process of the supercavity and to measure drag forces acting on cavitators. Experiments were carried out at the cavitation tunnel of the Chungnam National University (CNU-CT), which has a capability to make sufficient flow speed for supercavitation experiments and to remove broken cavity bubbles coming back to the test section. Blockage effects on supercavity dimensions were evaluated and an effort was made to correlate tunnel experiments with unbounded flow. On the basis of experimental and numerical results, geometrical features of supercavities and characteristics of drag forces were examined and their relations were proposed.

  • In this study, a series of CFD analyses were carried out for a hydrogen rocket combustor with a single shear coaxial injector. A hybrid RANS/LES approach was used for the turbulent combustion analysis with a two-dimensional axisymmetric configuration. Three reaction mechanisms, three spatial discretization methods, and three levels of grid resolution were compared to determine an appropriate CFD approach. The performance of the CFD prediction were investigated by comparing the wall heat flux with experimental data. Investigation of the flow field results provides an insight into the characteristics of the turbulent reacting flow of a rocket combustor with a shear coaxial injector.

  • Most of the numerical and experimental studies on supercavitating flows are focused on the cavitator only. However, the partial cavity growing into the supercavity is affected by the shape of the body placed behind the cavitator. In this paper, we develope a numerical method which is based on the boundary element method to predict supercavitating flow around three-dimensional axisymmetric bodies. We estimate the influence of the body shape on the supercavity growth. Here, we consider various parameters of the body such as cavitator shape, shoulder length and body diameter, and compare the results with the case of the cavitator only. In summary, it is found that the body may impede the cavity growth, the shoulder mainly affects the cavity length, and the supercavity occurring in the cone type cavitator is strongly influenced rather than that of the disk type cavitator.

  • Adiabatic blanking is a method to improve productivity through an autocatalytic cycle that occurs repeatedly through plastic deformation and thermal softening caused by impact energy. In this study, an axisymmetric analysis model comprising a punch, die, holder, and specimen was developed to confirm the temperature and deformation characteristics caused by an impact load. Through this, the impact energy, diameter of the punch, gap between the punch and die, and the effect of the fillet were analyzed. Because this process occurs in a very short time, adiabatic analysis can be performed using the explicit time-integration method. The analysis, confirmed that it is necessary to design a structure capable of increasing the local temperature and plastic deformation by controlling the impact energy, working area, gap, and the fillet.

  • Closed-die forging of spur gears with hollow cylindrical billet has been analysed by using the upper-bound method. A kinematically admissible velocity field has been developed, wherein, an involute curve has been introduced to represent the forging die profile. In the analysis, the deformation region has been divided into nine zones. A constant frictional stress has been assumed on the contacting surfaces. Utilizing the formulated velocity field, numerical calculations have been carried out to investigate the effects of various parameters, such as module, number of teeth and friction factor, on the forging of spur gears. Hardness and accuracy of forged gears are measured. The following results have been obtained: (1) It is verified that an axisymmetric deformation zone exists between root circle and center of gear through forged gears. (2) The average relative forging pressure is predominantly dependent on the number of teeth and increases near the final filling stage as the addendum modification coefficient increases. (3) Close agreement was found between the predicted values of forging load and those obtained from experimental results.

  • In this paper, radiation characteristics of the beating sound are analytically investigated on a slightly asymmetric cylindrical shell. The cylindrical shell isan efficient model to consider the beat characteristics of Korean bells. Slight asymmetry in Korean bells makes mode pair which has close frequency components and the interaction of each mode pair produces beating sound. Based on the analytical model, the radiated sound field is determined. Using the sound beat map, the beating sound vs. direction and distance is investigated. Finally, results of the theoretical method are compared with those of the boundary element method to verify the validity.

  • The purpose of this research is to investigate the characteristics of heat transfer in the downward axisymmetric free water jet system impinged on a flat oblique plate which has the uniform heat flux. Experimental conditions considered were Reynolds number, distance between nozzle and Bat plate, inclination angle of heater surface and nozzle exit velocity. Local Nusselt number was subjected to the influence of Re number, Pr number, oblique angle of heating surface and local position of flat plate. In the wall region of downward surface, The secondary peak point of heat transfer appeared at the local point of X/D=-8 from the stagnation point. The stagnation heat transfer rate of this experimental study augments 2.4 times than that of laminar theorical solution. The stagnation nusselt number is function of Reynolds number, nozzle-plate spacing Prandtl number and oblique angle of impinging plate.

  • An experimental study on forging an axi-symmetric dome type of AISI4130 was carried out using modeling material. In order to verify the validity of the experimental data, a similarity study between plasticine and AISI4130 has been made. Friction conditions were characterized by ring test for the various lubricants. For the closed-die forging experiments of an axi-symmetric dome type of AISI4130 using the plasticine, various cylindrical billets with different aspect ratios were forged and different flash width to thickness(W/T) ratios were used in order to determine the optimum forging conditions. As W/T ratios decrease forging loads decrease while excess volumes increase. It was found out that the experimental results reproduce the similiar results available in the literature. As a result of these experiments, it was construed physical modeling is an excellent tool for forging process simulation at a practical level.
