  • The wooden pagoda sites which have been confirmed in Baekjae's former territory so far have flattened surface of the earth or foundation pert made by digging up the earth. In particular, the latter is found more often in the pagoda sites of Baekjae, which is essential and absolutely necessary because of the characteristics of pagoda structure. The wooden pagoda sites with foundation part made by digging up the earth under the stylobate are found at Yongjeongli ruined temple site of Woongjin area, and at Neung-sa temple site, Wangheung-sa temple site, Geumgang-sa temple site, and Mireuk-sa temple site of Sabi period. They are also observed at Hwanglyong-sa nine-storied wooden pagoda of Shilla and at Biin five-storied stone pagoda of early Goryeo. They are important data improving that the construction technologies of Baekjae continued to be applied to build stone or wooden pagodas, transcending time and space. Recently, the site assumed as a wood pagoda site of Hanseong area was examined in Gyeongdang sect ion of Pungnap mud fortification. If this is proved to be a real wooden pagoda site, this digging-up construction technology of foundation part ann be concluded to be a traditional engineering technology of Baekjae which was frequently used from Hanseong period to Sabi period. On the other hand, this digging-up construction technology of foundation part has been found only at pagoda sites and main building sites of temple ruins, and it helps examine their symbolism.

  • The Mireuksaji stone pagoda is constructed Baekje Period in the 7th century which is located in Iksan, Korea. This stone pagoda designated by National Treasure No. 11 is the only remaining pagoda. This pagoda has lost the original form in part and the whole stonework wase dismantled. Work for the restoration is currently in progress. This study was divided into soil strata such as construct layer of the temple site, foundation layer of the pagoda basement, and construct layer of the stylobate by stratum to interpretation the skill of rammed earth and making techniques. The of physical, mineralogical and geochemical characteristics of soil samples were identified. Five pieces of soil in and around the Mireuksaji temple site was selected for the comparative study to interpretate the mutual homogeneity among soil stratum. As a result, artificial addition has not been identified in all soil samples using rammed earth. The soils used for the basement of the stone pagoda (construct layer of the temple site, foundation layer of the pagoda basement, construct layer of the stylobate) were confirmed to be the same origin as soil in and around Mireuksaji temple site. Thus these results indicate that the basement of the pagoda was constructed using soils in and around the Mireuksaji temple site without work as careful selection.

  • The morphological characteristics of the baculum were compared among Rhinolophus ferrumequinum, Hypsugo alaschanicus, Vespertilio sinensis, and Murina hilgendorfi. Their bacula were located at the distal end but their shapes were differed among species. V. sinensis had the longest baculum (mean=7.27 mm), followed by R. ferrumequinum (mean=5.02 mm), H. alaschanicus (mean=2.60 mm) and M. hilgendorfi (mean=2.15 mm). The baculum of R. ferrumequinum was Y-shaped, with a pointed tip and that of V. sinensis was long and conical. However, the baculum of H. alaschanicus was I-shaped, with the widths of proximal and distal ends larger than that of the shaft. The baculum of M. hilgendorfi was small, and oval shaped. The shaft of the baculum of R. ferrumequinum and H. alaschanicus was linear in shape, whereas that of V. sinensis was curved towards the distal end, and that of M. hilgendorfi was bent upward. The results showed that the baculum morphology differed among these four species. These findings can be utilized as an identification key for these species, and they can be used as baseline data for studying the phyletic relationships of bats.

  • Variation of wood rays within a growth ring and along axial direction in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi, which are important Korean commercial softwoods, was examined to get some useful information for their effective utilization. Ray height in cell number and ray number per $0.25mm^2$ in tangential section were investigated by optical microscopy. The average heights of uniseriate rays in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi were 6.3 and 9.1 cells, respectively. The average numbers of uniseriate rays per $0.25mm^2$ in Pinus koraiensis and Larix kaempferi were 6.5 and 7.5, respectively. The average heights of fusiform rays were about 20 cells but were not significantly different in both species. From earlywood to latewood within a growth ring, the heights of uniseriate and fusiform rays decreased but their numbers remained almost constant. Along axial direction, the heights of uniseriate rays in both species increased with the increase of stem height, and the numbers of uniseriate rays per $0.25mm^2$ in Pinus koraiensis were nearly constant from 0.2 m to 5.2 m but increased up to 19.2 m beyond 5.2 m. However, a constant pattern in the numbers of uniseriate rays was not observed in Larix kaempferi. The heights of fusiform rays in both species were the highest in middle part of stems but were the lowest in base and top of trees. In conclusion, the ray variation pattern was comparatively clear within a growth ring but not clear along axial direction.

  • This paper presents a sliding mode controller (SMC) to directly control the active and reactive powers of a doubly ffd induction generator (DFIG) for wind turbines. Sliding-mode control (SMC) and space-vector modulation (SVM) are combined to ensure high-performance operation. SMC scheme is designed to provide robust and fast power controls without frame transformation and current controller used in the conventional FOC drive. Simulation results and experimental results demonstrate that proposed methods preserve the effectiveness and robustness during variations of active and reactive power.

  • A wind turbine simulator is developed for the emulation of variable input torque from the wind energy without actual rotor blades using motor-generator set. The torque command of dc motor is calculated from the characteristic equation of rotor blade during the change of wind speed. Especially the proposed control algorithm takes into account the fact that the moment of inertia of blade is much larger than that of driving motor. If you select the desired value of inertia, the stored/restored energy of the inertia during acceleration/deceleration can be compensated effectively resulting the only net torque is delivered to the generator. The simulator set-up has been designed and implemented using a do motor and drive. Feasibility of the proposed algorithm is verified by computer simulations and experiments.

  • The fine structure of spermatozoa of Leiocassis ussuriensis was examined with scanning and transmission electron microscopies. The spermatozoon of L. ussuriensis is approximately $68.8\;{\mu}m$ in length and a relatively simple cell with a spherical nucleus, a short midpiece and a tail. The ultrastructure of spermatozoa of L. ussuriensis is characterized by the following features. The nuclear fossa, the length of which is about two-thirds of the nuclear diameter, contains two centrioles. The centrioles are orientated approximately $180^{\circ}$ to each other. The mitochondria are arranged in two layers and their number is 12 or more. The axoneme is the 9+2microtubular pattern and has inner but no outer dynein arms as in other bagrids. The two axonemal fins are in the same plane with the two central microtubules, the doublets 3 and 8. The axonemal fins and the inner dynein arm are shared in Bagridae and the deep nuclear fossa is shared in Siluriformes. The axonemal finsobse observed in Bagridae and Amblycipitidae of Siluriformes might be the apomorphic character in Ostariophysi. They are not reported in Cyprinidae and Characiformes.

  • The spermatozoa of bagrid catfish, Pseudobagrus fulvidraco are approximately $76{\mu}m$ in length, and a relatively simple and elongated cell composed of a spherical head, a short middle piece and a tail. The ultrastructure of spermatozoa of P. fulvidraco is characterized by the following features. The acrosome is absent as in most teleost. The round nucleus measuring about $1.67{\mu}m$ in length and diameter is depressed with a deep nuclear fossa. The nuclear fossa, the length of which is about three-fifths of the nuclear diameter, contains the proximal and distal contrioles. The two centrioles are oriented approximately $160^{\circ}$ to each other. The filamentous materials give rise to satellite appendages arranged tangentially from the triplets of the distal centriole and the doublets of the anterior end of the axoneme toward the nuclear envelope. The mitochondria are not fused and their number is 20 or more. They are arranged in two or three layers and two rings within the cytoplasmic collar and surround the axoneme. They are separated from the axoneme by the cytoplasmic canal. The axoneme is of the 9+2 microtubular pattern and has inner but no outer dynein arms. The two lateral fins are in the same plane with the two central microtubules, the doublets 3 and 8, which are ultrastructural characteristics of the sperm tail unlike other siluroids lacking the lateral fins.
