  • A push pull hood system is frequently applied to control contaminants evaporated from an open surface tank. Efficiency of push pull hood system is affected by various parameters, such as, cross draft, vessel shapes, tank surface area, liquid temperature. A previous work assisted by flow visualization technique qualitatively showed that a strong cross draft blown from the pull hood to push slot could destroy a stable wall-jet on the surface of tank, resulting in the abrupt escape of smoke from the surface. In this study, the tracer gas method was applied to determine the effect of cross-draft on the capture efficiency qualitatively. A new concept of capture efficiency was introduced, that is, linear efficiency. This can be determined by measuring the mass of tracer gas in the duct of pull hood while the linear tracer source is in between push slot and pull hood. By traversing the linear tracer source from the push slot to the pull hood, it can be found where the contaminant is escaped from the tank. Total capture efficiency can be determined by averaging the linear efficiencies. Under the condition of cross-draft velocities of 0, 0.4, 0.75, 1.05 and 1.47m/s, total capture efficiencies were measured as 97.6, 95.4, 94.6, 92.7 and 70.5% respectively. The abrupt reduction of efficiency with cross-draft velocity of 1.47m/s was due to the destruction of tank surface wall-jet by the counter-current cross-draft. The same phenomenon was observed in the previous flow visualization study. As an alternative to overcome this abrupt efficiency drop, the 20% increase of hood flow rates was tested, resulting in 20% efficiency increase.

  • By controlling the internal pressure in the cyclone separator, we investigated the separation charateristics of $Al_2O_3$, $Fe_2O_3$ particles with the internal pressure variation. 3-dimensional Langrangian approach was applied for the analysis of the particles separation, and then the minimum cut diameter of the separated particles and the separation rate were calculated through tracking the particle trajectories. The density of the argon gas for transporting particles was decreased corresponding the pressure decrease, consequently, caused the internal pressure drop in the cyclone separator. For that reason the finer particles were separated as the pressure was changed from an atmospheric pressure to an low pressure. Specifically, at 50 torr pressure, $Al_2O_3$ particles of the size of about 4 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and $Fe_2O_3$particles of about 3 $\mu\textrm{m}$ could be separated.

  • Energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks is a principal issue to prolong applications to track the movement of the large-scale phenomena. It is a selective wakeup approach that is an effective way to save energy in the networks. However, most previous studies with the selective wakeup scheme are concentrated on individual objects such as intruders and tanks, and thus cannot be applied for tracking continuous objects such as wild fire and poison gas. This is because the continuous object is pretty flexible and volatile due to its sensitiveness to surrounding circumferences so that movable area cannot be estimated by the just spatiotemporal mechanism. Therefore, we propose a cluster-based algorithm for applying the efficient and more accurate technique to the continuous object tracking in enough dense sensor networks. Proposed algorithm wakes up the sensors in unit cluster where target objects may be diffused or shrunken. Moreover, our scheme is asynchronous because it does not need to calculate the next area at the same time.

  • This paper discussed the dispersion effect according to the geometrical variation of an internal-loop spparatus by the method of pulse injection of a tracer. The Bodenstein number, which is the dimensionless group characterizing the effect of dispersion, was decreased with increasing the superficial gas velocity in the 50L and the 500L apparatus. But, in the 5L apparatus, the Bodenstein number was increased with increasing the superficial gas velocity in the range of 0 to 2cm/sec but above that range the rate of increase was dropped down to give a constant value because of the phenomenon of gas disengagement. The principle of similarity based on dimensional analysis was applied to design a pilot scale internal-loop apparatus. The effect of dispersion was examined in three different internal-loop apparatus to give the following correlation with major geometric and fluid dynamic properties as variables. B0=4.4014ReG0.117 ReL-0.0065(Hr/Dr)0.76(Dd/Dr)-0.76

  • In this laboratory study, the changes in gas-exposed perchloroethene (PCE) saturation in sand during a PCE removal process were measured using gaseous tracers. The flux of fresh air through a glass column packed with PCEcontaminated, partially water-saturated sand drove the removal of PCE from the column. During the removal of PCE, methane, n-pentane, difluoromethane and chloroform were used as the non-reactive, PCE-partitioning, water-partitioning, and PCE and water-partitioning tracers, respectively. N-pentane was used to detect the PCE fraction exposed to the mobile gas. At water saturation of 0.11, only 65% of the PCE was found to be exposed to the mobile gas prior to the removal of PCE, as calculated from the n-pentane retardation factor. More PCE than that detected by n-pentane was depleted from the column due to volatilization through the aqueous phase. However, the ratio of gas-exposed to total PCE decreased on the removal of PCE, implying gas-exposed PCE was preferentially removed by vaporization. These results suggest that the water-insoluble, PCE-partitioning tracer (n-pentane in this study), along with other tracers, can be used to investigate the changes in fluid (including nonaqueous phase liquid) saturation and the removal mechanism during the remediation process.

  • A real-time dose assessment system(FADAS : Following Accident Dose Assessment System) has been developed for the real-time accident consequence assessment against a nuclear accident. Field tracer experiment near Younggwang nuclear power plant was performed to improve the accuracy of developed system and to parameterize the site-specific parameters into the FADAS. The mean values and turbulent components of wind profile obtained through field experiment have been reflected to FADAS with site-specific conditions. The simulated results of diffusion model agreed well with the measured data through tracer experiment. The developed system is being used as a basic module of emergency preparedness system in Korea. The diffusion model which can be reflected site-specific parameters will be improved through field experiments continuously.

  • The bolier systems of coal fired power plants are large, non-linear systems with numerous interactions between its component parts. In the analysis of such complex systems, dynamic simulation is recognized as a powerful method of keeping track of the myriad of interactions. The boiler system consists of air/gas system and water/steam system. Due to recent reinforcement of environmental regulation on pollutant discharge and requirements of design validation on properites of boiler, the commercial programs are used for the analysis of boiler system. This paper addressed to the development of model using MMS(Modular Modeling System) developed by EPRI(Electric Power Research Institute) as the simulation tool. The developed model using MMS is tested for the design and local data on boiler combustion system of korea standard coal fired power plant boiler. The simulation results show that the developed model well reproduces responses of the combustion system with less than ${\pm}$5% error under steady state and transient state conditions. The developed model for analysis of the combustion system in this paper is general and applicable to any type of coal fired power plant.

  • This study intends to evaluate the seasonal flow direction of carbon dioxide in Northeast Asia by using GOSAT, the first Greenhouse Observing SATellite, in an attempt to overcome costly, laborious and time consuming ground observation which has been frequently pointed out in existing studies. For this purpose, missing values were supplemented by applying the Kriging interpolation and the overall flow direction of carbon dioxide was determined through anisotoropy semi-variogram. As a result, it was found that the overall spatial distribution of carbon dioxide in Northeast Asia varies depending on the latitude, and that carbon dioxide mainly flows southeast or east in spring, autumn and winter, but northeast or north in summer. Similar to the flow of monsoons in Northeast Asia, these results show that carbon dioxide flows mainly from the west to the east, which proves that carbon dioxide discharged from China is influencing even the Korean Peninsula and Japan. However, as the flow of carbon dioxide varies depending on a variety of factors such as artificial sources, plant respiration, and the absorption and discharge of the ocean, follow-up studies are requested to evaluate such variables and the correlations.

  • In modern air combat, infrared signals play an important role in the detection of opponents and must be reduced to improve survivability and stealth. In particular, IR signals generated in the wake of aircraft engines have high intensity and short wavelengths, so most heat-tracking missiles detect these signals. Accordingly, the measurement and characteristic analysis of Gas radiation signals from the engine's wake were carried out in this study. Micro turbojet engine has been configured to simulate a real aircraft turbofan engine, and the characteristics of IR signal reduction by adjusting the bypass ratio were identified. Through this, the IR signal characteristics for each wavelength are analyzed and verification of signal reduction technologies is performed.

  • The calculation method of infiltration loss in greenhouse has different ideas in each design standard, so there is a big difference in each method according to the size of greenhouses, it is necessary to establish a more accurate method that can be applied to the domestic. In order to provide basic data for the formulation of the calculation method of greenhouse heating load, we measured the infiltration rates using the tracer gas method in plastic greenhouses equipped with various thermal curtains. And then the calculation methods of infiltration loss in greenhouses were reviewed. Infiltration rates of the multi-span and single-span greenhouses were measured in the range of $0.042{\sim}0.245h^{-1}$ and $0.056{\sim}0.336h^{-1}$ respectively, single-span greenhouses appeared to be slightly larger. Infiltration rate of the greenhouse has been shown to significantly decrease depending on the number of thermal curtain layers without separation of single-span and multi-span. As the temperature differences between indoor and outdoor increase, the infiltration rates tended to increase. In the range of low wind speed during the experiments, changes of infiltration rate according to the outdoor wind speed could not find a consistent trend. Infiltration rates for the greenhouse heating design need to present the values at the appropriate temperature difference between indoor and outdoor. The change in the infiltration rate according to the wind speed does not need to be considered because the maximum heating load is calculated at a low wind speed range. However the correction factors to increase slightly the maximum heating load including the overall heat transfer coefficient should be applied at the strong wind regions. After reviewing the calculation method of infiltration loss, a method of using the infiltration heat transfer coefficient and the greenhouse covering area was found to have a problem, a method of using the infiltration rate and the greenhouse volume was determined to be reasonable.
