  • A pre-feasibility test is done for renewable energy hybrid power systems at off~grid islands in which the current power supply is provided only by diesel generation. We apply Homer (Hybrid Optimization Model for Electric Renewables) which was developed by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the analysis to identify the cost-minimizing combination of power generating facilities for the given load profiles. Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do have been selected for our analysis considering the wind resources data of the Korea Institute of Energy Research (KIER). Information on wind speed, solar radiation and temperature is also used for the analysis. System component cost information from overseas market has been used due to the lack of domestic information. Site specific Load profile for electricity demand for those islands are reconstructed based on the partial survey results obtained form other sources. The LCOE of the least cost hybrid power systems for Chuja-Do, Geomun-Do and Youngsan-Do are $0.278/kWh, $0.234/kWh and $0.353/kWh, respectively Considering the fact that diesel generation is being subsidized at the price of $0.300/kWh by the government, first 2 cases are economically feasible for the introduction of renewable energy hybrid systems to those islands. But the third case of Youngsan-Do does not meet the criteria. The basic differences of these pre-feasibility test results are from the differences of the site specific renewable energy conditions, especially wind resources. In summary, promoting hybrid systems in the off-grid remote island should be based on the economic feasibility test results. Not all the off-grid islands are feasible for introducing this renewable energy hybrid system.

  • SLA and SST is high in summer and fall, it is low in spring and winter. The clearly annual period shows through the power spectrum density. A semi-annual period and seasonal period appeared, In. At sea surface variation of satellite data(Mean Sea Level Anomaly) and in-situ data, coefficient-correlation show 0.323 at Mukho which is located in the coastal. Chujado and Ulleungdo is a 0.685 and 0.780, retentively. A coefficient-correlation of SST show higher than sea surface variation as Mukho-0.920, Chujado-0.894 and Ulleungdo-0.815. A comparison between SST and MSLA show 0.77, SST appeared faster about 1 to 3 months than MSLA.

  • At present, domestic small islands mainly supply electric power using diesel generators. However, diesel generators can cause instability of the power system due to slow response on power load fluctuation, and cause environmental problems due to the emission of carbon gas by using fossil fuels. In order to overcome this problem, this paper proposes a method to establish an optimal microgrid by introducing solar power, wind power, and energy storage device to Chujado Island, which is supplied with electric power through a diesel generator. The economical optimum capacity of each distributed power source is calculated by using HOMER (Hybrid Optimization Model for Multiple Energy Resources) program and the proposed microgrid is validated by using PSCAD/EMTDC (Power Systems Computer Aided Design/ Electromagnetic Transients including DC) program which can analyze system stability.

  • The Government is managing "The Comprehensive Development Plan of Fishing Villages" which is a national program to ensure the effective use of the coast and reasonable management of fisheries resources. The Chuja-do was selected as an area for "The Comprehensive Development of Fishing Villages" because it has the characteristics of local independence and an advanced fishery using boats. The study covered the environment of the local fishing grounds, all aspects of the coast fishing and residents' thinking. The results of the study led to the following proposals : development of the coastal fishing grounds farmining industry, establishing the fishing grounds industry by dropping arcificial fish reefs, developing the tourist industry, improving the quality of fishery using boats, and establishing high quality fishing specialties.

• The marine benthic algal flora and biomass of Chuja Island, southern coast of Korea, was investigated. The collections of intertidal marine algae were made at two sites, Yecho of Hachujado and Hupo of Sangchujado, from October 2006 to July 2007. A total of 162 species, including 15 green, 47 brown and 100 red algae, were identified in this study. The occurrence of species according to season was abundant during spring to summer and less in autumn. The vertical distribution of intertidal zone in Chujado was characterized by Gloiopeltis spp., Myelophycus simplex, Ishige okamurae, Chondrus ocellatus, Grateloupia elliptica, Hizikia fusiformis and Sargassum spp. The average biomass of macroalgae was measured as 400 g wet wt m$^{-2}$. The dominant species based on the biomass were Sargassum yezoense, S. coreanum and Hizikia fusiformis. ESG II (ecological state group) as an opportunistic species, including sheet form, filamentous form, and coarsely branched form, occurred 85.8% in the intertidal seaweeds. These results provide a baseline for future monitoring studies in the Chuja Island.

  • A soudy on the distrobution and seasonal changes of the benthic macrovertebrates community was performed on the 5 intertidal rocky shores of Chujado in the Cheju-Channel during four seasons from March 1996 to February 1997.The macroinvertebrates identified in Chujado totally composed of 9 phyla, 18 classes, 38 orers, 147 species. The macroinvertebrates idetified according to the stations were 9 phyla, 138 species in Sinyangri(ST. 1); 8 phyla, 134 species in Younghungri(ST. 4);and 8 phyla, 131 species in Daeseori(ST. 5); The species diversities of the lower intertidal zones were higher than those of middle and upper intertidal zones, however, the seasonal appearance in number of species was not different among the stations. The vertically distributed dominant species in intertidal zone were; Nodifittorina exigua and Nerita japponica in the supralittoral zones; Monodonta labio labil and Buccinulum ferrea in the upper zones; Septifer keenae and Lunella coronata corensis in the middle zones; Purpura clavigara, S. keenae and Pomatoleios krausii in the submiddle zones; and Actinia mesembryanthemum, Tetracliata squamosa japonica and N. schrenckii in the lower zones. The intertidal community structures between Chujado and Cheju coast showed that Chujado composed of fewer number of species and lower value of species diversity and richness indices than Cheju coast.
