  • The MEMS solid propellant thrusters have very low thrust level for applying to the propulsion system of micro/nano satellites or the side jet thruster of smart bombs. In this research, the fabrication possibility of planar type MEMS solid propellant thrusters that have enlarged burning surface area was examined and the safety of the structure of thruster during the firing test was confirmed. The performance of a micro igniter which is the key component of the MEMS solid propellant thruster was estimated by the ANSYS Icepak and evaluated by the experiment. Finally, the thrust was measured by the micro force sensor. The levels of thrust were 300, 600 mN in the case of K=15, 20.

  • In order to evaluate the thrust of a propulsion system, generally the captive thrust stand is used Based on the applied propulsion system, the various captive ways between thrust stand and the propulsion system are considered. In this paper, the effect of motor deformation generated during firing in horizontal thrust stand on the measured thrust is theoretically derived from classical beam theory. New flexure performance index is defined and estimated on the basis of the thrust measurement error. Its result is good agreement with numerical result of ABAQUS. This study showed that measurement reliability and safety of test can be highly upgraded, in case of two flexure-type captive thrust stand.

  • Numerical computations were performed to investigate the effects of pintle stroke, altitude, and bore on the performance of an external pintle thruster. Results show that under-expansion flow occurs always, independent of pintle stroke. An external pintle thruster shows good performance in that it is capable of good amount of thrust control, while aerodynamic loads are increased due to shock waves on the pintle support. When altitude is increased to 20 km, the nozzle exit velocity, Mach number, thrust as well as aerodynamic loads are increased. Bore increases aerodynamic load 5.9%, and therefore pintle shape without bore is preferred for lower aerodynamic load of a pintle in order to actuate the pintle.

  • Theoretical analysis and performance test of Jet vane type Thrust Vector Control(TVC) were conducted using supersonic cold-flow system. The use of TVC Systems an in particular jet vanes, are currently being researched for use in air launch, ship launch, underwater launch and high altitude maneuvering of tactical missiles and rockets. The necessity to generate control forces to rapidly change the course of the missile is frequently required when traditional, exterior aerodynamic surfaces are unable to produce these forces, when the flow over the control surface is insufficient. This situation can occur at launch, or high angles of attack of the control surfaces. Jet vanes peformed well at all altitudes and environmental conditions, and jet vanes are extremely effective at deflection angles up to as high as $30^{\circ}$, make them ideal for the launch and maneuver applications. In this study, performance test of supersonic cold-flow system and visualization of supersonic jet was conducted, and shape and deflection angle effect of two types of jet vanes are investigated.

  • For the development of hydrazine decomposition catalyst, Hot-fire test to verify performance of catalyst is required. The purpose of a long-life firing test is to demonstrate the capability of a design to perform for the maximum duration or cycles of operation. This paper describes the progress of the catalyst performance test, explains the test matrix, and presents the test results.

  • An unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) should be designed to be as small and lightweight as possible to optimize the efficiency of changing the blade shape to enhance the aerodynamic performance, such as the thrust and power. In this study, a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation of an unmanned multi-rotor aerial vehicle in hover mode was performed to explore the thrust performance in terms of the blade rotational speed and blade shape parameters (i.e., taper ratio and twist angle). The commercial ADINA-CFD program was used to generate the CFD data, and the results were compared with those obtained from blade element theory (BET). The results showed that changes in the blade shape clearly affect the aerodynamic thrust of a UAV rotor blade.

  • A comprehensive understanding is given for the hot-firing test results, which were obtained throughout the verification program of mono-propellant hydrazine thrusters producing 0.95 lbf (4.2 Newtons) of nominal steady-state thrust at an inlet pressure of 350 psia (2.41 ㎫). The scrutiny is made in terms of thrust and temperature behavior of steady state firing mode at the given propellant injection pressures of 400, 250, 100, and 50 psi. Engineering philosophy of data measurement and reduction is shortly mentioned, too.

  • A ground hot-firing test was conducted to take out the optimal design configurations for the catalyst bed of liquid-monopropellant hydrazine thruster which could be used for primary engine or attitude control thruster of space vehicles. Performance characteristics with the variation of thrust-chamber length are investigated in terms of thrust, specific impulse, chamber pressure, characteristic velocity, and hydrazine decomposition rate. Additionally, the correlations between propellant-supply pressure and performance parameters are given. As results, increase of catalyst-bed length leads to performance degradation in this test condition, and also decreases propellant consumption efficiency with the supply pressure variation.
