Evaluation of the Inherent Flow Coefficient of the Control Valve in the Liquid Propellant Rocket Engine (액체로켓 엔진 성능 보정용 제어밸브의 고유유량특성 계산)

  • When a liquid rocket engine - specifically for the gas-generator cycle engine has throttle valves to control the thrust level and mixture ratio of the engine, it is possible to adjust the inherent flow characteristics of the control valves in order to secure a linearized correlation between the control-process-parameters like the thrust or mixture ratio of an engine and the throttle angle of valve. These linearities can reduce the complexity of the control process and make the process more explicit by ensuring the intuitive control. In this point, we proposed an algorithm within the frame of the in-house-developed program to obtain the control valves' inherent flow characteristics which satisfy the linearity, and calculated the sensitivities of control valves with respect to the throttle angle. Also, we compared the obtained inherent flow characteristics with the existed data and concluded the results are satisfactory.

고해상도 관측위성의 지상궤적 유지조정 알고리즘 연구

  • 이 연구의 목적은 고해상도 합성개구레이더 센서를 탑재한 관측위성의 운용요구사항에 맞춰 임무기간 동안 관측 목표지역을 주기적으로 반복하고 지상궤적을 $\pm2km$ 범위 내에서 안정성을 갖도록 유지 조정하는 궤도제어 알고리즘 연구를 수행하는데 있다. 기존에 수행되어 왔던 지상궤적에 대한 오차를 해석적으로 계산하여 궤도를 유지 조정하는 방법이 아닌 기준궤도에 대하여 상대좌표계에서 표현된 위성의 실제 접촉궤도를 기준궤도와 직접적으로 비교하여 목표궤적을 유지 조정하는 알고리즘을 연구하였다. 이를 위해 첫째, 고해상도 관측위성의 운용요구사항을 만족하는 계획된 목표궤도인 기준궤도를 설계하였다. 기본적으로 기준궤도는 임무 설계 시 완전한 주기성이 고려된 최대한 실제에 가까운 궤도이기 때문에 지구중력장 모델만을 고려하여 간략하게 설계하였다. 둘째, 실제의 인공위성의 궤도는 계획된 기준궤도를 유지해야 하지만 시간에 따라 섭동력의 영향을 받아 계획된 궤도로부터 벗어나게 된다. 기준궤도로부터 실제궤도가 얼마나 벗어나는지에 대한 정량적 분석을 위해 지구 중력장, 달-태양 중력, 대기저항력, 태양복사압, 조석력 등과 같은 다양한 섭동력의 영향에 대한 분석을 수행하였다. 셋째, 반경방향(radial), 진행방향(along-track), 교차방향(cross-track)의 세 방향의 성분으로 구성된 우주공간오차(Space Error) 개념을 적용하여, 투영된 지상궤적에 상응하는 오차를 계산하는 것 보다 안정적으로 오차를 계산하였다. 또한 운용요구사항에 따라 허용된 범위 내에서 궤도를 유지하기 위해 GVE(Gauss Variation Equation)을 이용한 궤도조정을 수행하였다. 섭동력의 분석 결과로부터 지구대기저항력, 달-태양 중력으로 인해 가장 두드러지는 장반경과 궤도이심률의 변화를 조정하기 위해, 임무에 사용되는 추력기의 연료 효율을 고려하여 동결궤도가 유지될 수 있는 최적의 위도이각에서 In-plane에 대한 궤도조정만을 수행하여 장반경과 이심률을 동시에 조정하였다. 지구대기와 태양활동의 영향으로 시간에 따른 장반경의 변화율에 따라 궤도조정 주기를 가지는 것을 알 수 있었고, 이 변화율 때문에 생기는 우주공간오차의 증가를 보정하여 위성의 지상궤적을 목표범위 안에서 유지할 수 있었다.

  • A thery was developed to design a high pressure vessel with combined structure of the metal and the composite to withstand the pressure of several tens of thousands psias to reduce the weight of the impulse motor which produces high level of thrust within several tens of seconds. The elastic-plastic stress analyses were carried out to prove the validity of the design theory. A combustion chamber of the impulse motor was designed by the design theory, fabricated, and tested by the hydraulic pressure and the static firings. The bursting pressures from the tests were compared to those predicted by the design theory and the stress analyses and found to be almost the same. It will be possible to design the high pressure vessel with combined structure of the metal and the composite very easily by the proposed design theory.

  • The conceptual design lunar lander demonstrator has been developed to use as a test bed for advanced spacecraft technologies and to test a prototype planetary lander capable of vertical takeoff and landing. Size of the lunar lander demonstrator is the same as that of lunar lander conceptually designed, however, the weight of lunar lander demonstrator is designed in 1/6 scale in consideration of gravity difference between moon and earth. The thruster clustering and virtual flight test were performed in the demonstrator fixed on the ground. The demonstrator ground test has been conducted for two months in the test site for the solid motor combustion of the Goheung Flight Center. The purposes of ground test of demonstrator are to demonstrate and verify essential electronics, propulsion system, control algorithm, embedded software, structure and system operation technologies before developing the flight model lander. This paper is described about the virtual flight test including test configuration, test aims and test facilities

  • Scramjet engine is one of the core parts of hypersonic vehicle of next generation and being investigated by many countries. Korea Aerospace Research Institute performed a ground test of the model scramjet engine S1 in 2007. And, S2 model which is improved from S1 model in engine startability and thrust was tested with HIEST (High Enthalpy Shock Tunnel) at Kakuda Space Center of JAXA. Design condition of S2 model was Mach 6.7, however, it was tested at Mach 7.7 as an off-design condition test. As a test result, flow separation was found at the inside of the intake, but the engine showed stable combustion pressure distribution. Furthermore, compared to other test models, S2 model showed a good performance value in thrust and specific impulse.

  • This study is a preliminary research on characterization of methane - oxygen combustion used in bipropellant thruster. The limit of combustion stability and flame shape of methane - oxygen non-premixed flame injected by shear coaxial injector in the model combustion chamber Experimental studies have been carried out. A direct image of the flame was photographed using a DSLR camera, and combustion characteristics and flame length were quantified through image post-processing. As a result, it was confirmed that the stabilized flame was generated at the stoichiometric ratio as the oxidizer Reynolds number ($Re_o$) was increased, and the length of the turbulent flame was increased under the same injector diameter condition.

Development of 2-ton thrust-level sub-scale calorimeter (추력 2톤급 축소형 칼로리미터 개발)

  • A calorimeter of 2-ton thrust level rocket engine chamber has been developed to measure the wall heat flux. The liner of the chamber is made of copper-chromium alloy to maximize the heat transfer performance and structural strength. 1-D design code based on empirical correlations has been used for the prediction of the global thermal characteristics while 3-D CFD has been applied for the verification of local cooling performance. The predicted average wall heat flux at the throat is 43 $MW/m^{2}$ for the combustion chamber pressure of 53 bar. The chamber structure is confirmed to be safe at the pressure of 150 bar through 2-D stress analysis and measurement of the strain of the test species. Finally, the test of pressurizing the calorimeter chamber has been performed with water at the pressure of 150 bar in room temperature environment. No thermal damage has been detected after the hot-fire test in the test nozzle of same cooling performance with the developed calorimeter though the measured throat heat flux is higher than the design value by 10%.

Temporary Satellite Constellation Design for the Ground Reconnaissance Mission (지상 정찰을 위한 임시 위성군집궤도 설계)

  • In this paper, the authors introduced a new approach to find the target orbits of each satellite in order to establish a temporary reconnaissance constellation mission to minimize the average revisit time (ART) while satisfying the constraint on fuel limit. Two distinct problems are dealt with: the first is to reconnoiter the local area with discriminating fuel constraint the second is to reconnoiter ground moving target with same fuel constraint. A preliminary effort in applying a genetic algorithm to those problems has also been demonstrated through simulation study. The results show that current ARTs of each mission are reduced by 41% and 42%, respectively, by relocating the orbit of each satellite. Naturally, the final result may depend on satellite orbits, sensor characteristics, allowable fuel cost, thruster capability, and maneuver strategies.

Computation of a Two-dimensional Nozzle Flow with the Variation of Pressure and Length Ratios (수치계산에 의한 2차원 초음속 노즐에서 압력비와 길이비에 따른 흐름 특성)

  • The Navier-Stokes equations are numerically solved for a two-dimensional small nozzle with the area ratio of 1.8 between the throat and the exit. The shock structures are verified inside the nozzle and near the exit varying with the pressure ratio and the length of the diverging part, respectively. Especially the irregular patterns in the pressure distribution near the throat are analyzed based on the geometric characteristics. It is found that there are similar phenomena in the shock wave structure between the pressure ratio and the length changes. Also there exists a normal shock just between two different oblique shocks crossing each other in special cases.

  • This research is carried out for the performance evaluation of the injector that is one of the critical components of bipropellant-rocket-engine. Spray characteristics are investigated in detail according to the recess length and injection pressure on the swirl-coaxial-injector using gaseous methane and liquid oxygen as propellants. A visualization is conducted by the Schlieren photography that is composed of a light source, concave mirrors, knife, and high-speed-camera. A hollow-cone-shape is identified in the liquid spray that is spread only by inner injector and the spray angle is decreased due to the diminution of swirl strength in accordance with the increase of the length of injector orifice. When the injector sprays the liquid through the inner injector with the aid of gas through the outer injector, the spray angle in external mixing region tends to increase with rise of the recess length, while in internal mixing region, it is decreased. It is also confirmed that the same tendency of the spray angle with recess length appears irrespective of the injection pressure of liquid spray.
