  • It is known that reliability of liquid rocket engines depends on the design thrust, propellant, engine cycle, and hot firing test time. Previously, a method was developed for estimating reliability of a new engine by adjusting the design thrust and hot firing test time of reference engines where reference engines have the same propellant and engine cycle with the new engine. In this paper, we provide a procedure to predict the engine reliability when the new engine and the reference engine have different propellant and engine cycles. The proposed method is illustrated to estimate the engine reliability of the first stage of Korea Space Launch Vehicle II.

  • LRE(liquid rocket engine) performance design code with several modules for each engine component has been developed for a preliminary design purpose. Thrust chamber, non-cryogenic centrifugal pump, single stage axial impulse turbine, gas generator and exhaust pipe for extra thrust have been considered. For simplicity, pump exit pressures are fixed, which eliminates pressure balancing problem between thrust chamber and turbopump unit. In this paper, calculated performance parameters with system flow charts and the design methodologies for each component are briefly presented and the results are compared with tile real engine specification.

  • In this paper, the design procedure of a guidance algorithm in the boosting phase of missiles with free-flight after thrust cut-off is introduced. The purpose of the guidance is to achieve a required velocity vector at the thrust cut-off. Trajectory optimizations for four cost functions are performed to investigate implementable trajectories in the pitch plane. It is observed from the optimization results that high angle of attack maneuver in the beginning of the flight are required to satisfy the constraints. The proposed guidance algorithm consists of the pitch program to produce open-loop pitch attitude command and the yaw attitude command generator to nullify the velocity to go. The pitch program utilizes the pitch attitude histories obtained from the trajectory optimization.

  • A nonlinear pressure controller to actively regulate the thrust of a solid propulsion system is presented. To compensate for the parametric uncertainties with respect to the chamber pressure induced by changing nozzle throat area, Lyapunov-based parameter adaptation method has been applied. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control method, the experiments were carried out using the cold gas test equipment that can simulate the operating environment of variable thrust solid propulsion system. The experiment results show that the nonlinear pressure controller has better performance than conventional P and PI controller.

  • Micro catalytic reactors are alternative propulsion device that can be used on a nano satellite. When used with a monopropellant, $H_2O_2$, a micro catalytic reactor needs only one supply system as the monopropellant reacts spontaneously on contact with catalyst and releases heat without external ignition, while separate supply lines for fuel and oxidizer are needed for a bipropellant rocket engine. Additionally, $H_2O_2$ is in liquid phase at room temperature, eliminating the burden of storage for gaseous fuel and carburetion of liquid fuel. In order to design a micro catalytic reactor, an appropriate catalyst material must be selected. Considering the safety concern in handling the monopropellants and reaction performance of catalyst, we selected hydrogen peroxide at volume concentration of 70% and perovskite redox catalyst of lantanium cobaltate doped with strondium. Perovskite catalysts are known to have superior reactivity in reduction-oxidation chemical processes. In particular, lantanium cobaltate has better performance in chemical reactions involving oxygen atom exchange than other perovskite materials. In the present study, a process to prepare perovskite type catalyst, $La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}CoO_3$, and measurement of its propellant decomposition performance in a test reactor are described.

  • The ducted fan for a small UAV propulsion can reconnoiter and observe in a town and a small area, it has better thrust efficiency and a long endurance than propeller. Thrust characteristics of hover and for ward flight condition for the ducted fan UAV is important issue to improve a endurance. The unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields of the ducted fan UAV is essential to stable flight. In this paper, to verify the design results of the ducted fan and to investigate a stable aeronautical characteristic, the thrust performance and the unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields are measured. Thrust characteristics for the hovering and the forward flight conditions are measured by the 6-components balance system in the subsonic wind tunnel. The unsteady 3-dimensional flow fields are analyzed by using a stationary $45^{\circ}$ slanted hot-wire technique. The swirl velocity is almost removed behind the stator blades. Therefore, the thrust performance of the ducted fan is improved and the flight stability is maintained.

  • In this study, an MEMS thrust measurement system was designed and a study on the performance prediction of system was performed to evaluate the performance of micro thruster. Thrust measurement system consists of beam, membrane, and piezoresistive sensor. An FEM analysis was carried out to verify the stability of the system, confirm the stress variation at the beam, and position the piezoresistive sensor. The stability of the designed system was verified by comparing the yield strength of the material with the maximum stress. The piezoresistive sensor was designed to be 20% of the length of the beam to obtain a high gauge factor. The size of the membrane and the beam of the reference model were designed to be $15mm{\times}15mm$, and $500{\mu}m{\times}500{\mu}m$, respectively.

  • Results of dry-run tests, cold-flow tests, and hot-firing tests performed to throttle a methane engine uni-element thrust chamber are covered in the paper. After installing flow control valves on the oxidizer and fuel supply lines of the methane engine combustion test facility, a number of dry-run tests were repeated so that the valves could reach set strokes quickly and stably. Then, cold-flow tests using liquid nitrogen and gaseous nitrogen were conducted to confirm the stable supply of the simulated propellants according to the valve control. Finally, using liquid oxygen and gaseous methane, hot-firing tests for fixed and continuous thrust control of 50% to 10% of the nominal thrust were successfully performed.
