  • The purpose of this study is to develop a simple and rational crack evaluation system using Marshall tester. Fracture energy were used as a parameter to evaluate the crack resistance of asphalt mixtures. Marshall tester basically measures the vertical deformation obtained from the linear variable differential transformer(LVDT) attached on the specimen's exterior, which can cause a measurement error due to the local deformation near the loading head. Therefore, the validity of the measurement system of Marshall tester should be tested to use it in calculation of fracture energy. Two types of indirect tensile strength tests were performed using four types of asphalt mixtures at two temperature conditions. From the tests, it was shown that local deformation near the loading head had not occurred before a specimen was fractured, so that it did not cause the measurement error of fracture energy. And also from the statistic analysis, the coefficient of variation of vertical deformation measurements obtained on specimen's exterior is less than 15%. Thus, vertical deformation measurements obtained on the specimen's exterior can be used in crack evaluation system using Marshall tester.

  • Plastic gradient from geometrically necessary dislocation(GND) can affect material behavior significantly. In this research, mechanical behavior of polycrystalline solid is investigated using the finite element method incorporating plastic gradient from long range dislocation or GND effect. Plastic gradient effect is implemented in the analysis model by considering a long range strain term as well as elastic and plastic terms in the multiplicative decomposition. In the model, gradient hardness coefficient and length parameter are used to evaluate the effect of the long range strains and sensitive study is conducted for the parameters. It is confirmed that the GND amplifies hardening response of polycrystals compared with the single crystal.

  • Composite materials have been widely applied for fabricating pressure vessels used for storing gaseous and liquid fuel because of their high specific stiffness and specific strength. Accordingly, the accurate measurement of their mechanical property, particularly the burst pressure or fracture strain, is essential prior to the commercial release. However, verification of the safety of composite pressure vessels using conventional test methods poses some limitations because it may lead to the deformation of the load transferring media or provoke an additional energy loss that cannot be ignored. Therefore, in this study, the segment-type ring burst test device was designed considering the theoretical load transferring ratio and applicable displacement of the vertical column. Moreover, to verifying the uniform distribution of pressure of the segment type ring burst test device, the hoop stress and strain distribution of ring specimens were compared with that of the hydraulic pressure test method via FEM. To conduct a simulation of the fracture behavior of the composite pressure vessel, a Hashin failure criterion was applied to the ring specimen. Furthermore, the fracture strain was also measured from the experiment and compared with that of the result from the FEM.

  • In this study, the strain based monitoring method to evaluate the lateral structural response of buildings is presented and an applicability of the proposed method is confirmed through the numerical study. It is assumed that the fiber Bragg grating(FBG) strain sensor is employed to measure the strain response of members due to the excellent properties such as multiplexing, and higher sampling frequency. These properties of FBG sensors is proper for buildings the a lot of sensors are required to monitor the reponses of those. FBG sensors measure the strain response of vertical members and are employed to calculate the curvatures of members using the measured strain responses. Then the lateral displacement, and lateral acceleration is evaluated based on the curvatures of vertical members. Additionally, these dynamic responses of buildings are used to evaluate the dynamic properties of buildings such as the natural frequencies and mode shapes using the frequency domain decomposition(FDD) method. Through the application of nine-story steel moment frame example structure, it is confirmed that the proposed method is appropriate to evaluate the lateral structural responses and dynamic properties of buildings.

  • Conventional model updating methods for the structures have used global structural responses which are modal parameters obtained through vibration measurements. Although models updated by modal parameters estimate global structural responses accurately, they have difficulties to predict local responses for safety assesment of structural members. The safety of structural members in the structures has been evaluated through the stress estimation based on strain measurements. Thus, this study additionally uses measured strain responses of structural members to perform model updating besides modal parameters. In the proposed method, the objective functions are set to the differences of the global and local responses obtained from updated model and measurement and those functions are minimized by NSGA-II, one of the multi-objective optimization techniques. The strain responses predicted from updated model are used for safety assessment of the steel frame structures. The proposed method are verified by numerical and experimental studies through the impact hammer tests for a steel frame specimen.

  • In this study, a general program has been developed to calculate the static design factor of a vehicle suspension system. The partial derivatives of Jacobians for constraint equations are calculated using the symbolic technique. In the commercial program, finite difference method is used to calculate the Jacobian matrix of Jacobian. But in this study, it is calculated by using the symbol calculation method to precisely consider it. The calculated Jacobian matrix for the system has proved its accuracy through the solution of the numerical example. A simulation was performed for a double wishbone suspension of a 1/4 vehicle. The result can be used to calculate the static design factor of the suspension, and also add a convergence module that can perform virtual tests.

  • Dry shrinkage md temperature change cause to develope concrete bridge decks on main girders have initial unidirectional cracks in longitudinal or transverse direction. As they receive traffic loads, the crack gradually propagate in different directions depending on the concrete dimension and reinforcement ratio. Since existing equations that predict crack width are mostly based on the one directional bond-slip theory, it is difficult to determine the actual crack width of a bridge deck with varying the spacing of rebar or strengthening material and to estimate the improvement rate in serviceability of the strengthened bridge deck. In this study, crack propagation mechanism is identified based on the test results and a new crack prediction equation is proposed for evaluation of serviceability. Although more accurate results are derived using the proposed equation, the extent of error is increased as the strain of the rebar or the strengthening material increases after the yielding of rebar Therefore, further research is required to better predict the crack width after the rebar yields under fatigue loading condition.

  • This paper presents development of a geometrically nonlinear triangular planar element including rotational degrees of freedom, based on the co-rotational(CR) formulation. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations and it is based on the assumptions on small strain and large rotation. In this paper, modified CR formulation is suggested for the developemnt of a triangular planar element. The present development is validated regarding the static and time transient problems. The present results are compared with the results predicted by the previous researchers and those obtained by the existing commercial software.

  • The extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (EFPI) optical fiber sensor shows good sensitivity and resolution, and has many advantages over optical fiber sensors of other types. However, this EFPI optical fiber sensor has a disadvantage that the distinction of measuring directions is difficult due to the measurement method by using only fringe counting. In this paper, the transmission-type extrinsic Fabry-Perot interferometric (TEFPI) optical fiber sensor was developed, which has been improved by the additional function and whose measuring system is different from that of the conventional EFPI optical fiber sensor. Then the application result of the TEFPI optical fiber sensor to the strain and temperature measurement was explained in detail.

  • Beam-column joints are generally recognized as the critical regions in the moment resisting reinforced concrete (RC) frames subjected to both lateral and vertical loads. As a result of severe lateral load such as seismic loading, the joint region is subjected to horizontal and vertical shear forces whose magnitudes are many times higher than in column and adjacent beam. Consequently, much larger bond and shear stresses are required to sustain these magnified forces. The critical deterioration of potential shear strength in the joint area should not occur until ductile capacity of adjacent beams reach the design demand. In this study, a method was provided to predict the deformability of reinforced concrete beam-column joints failing in shear after the plastic hinges developed at both ends of the adjacent beams. In order to verify the deformability estimated by the proposed method, an experimental study consisting of three joint specimens with varying tensile reinforcement ratios was carried out. The result between the observed and predicted behavior of the joints showed reasonably good agreement.
