  • This study was performed under four operational conditions for nitrogen removal in metal finishing wastewater. The conditions include electrode gap, reducing agent, the recycling of treated wastewater in 1st step and the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and other materials. Result showed that the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ was highest at the electrode gap of 10 mm. As the electrode gap was shorter than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ decreased due to increasing in concentration polarization on electrode. And, in case that the electrode gap was longer than 10 mm, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased with an increase in energy consumption. Because hydrogen ions are consumed when nitrate is reduced, reducing reaction of nitrate was effected more in acid solution. As 1.2 excess amount of zinc was injected, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased due to increasing in amount of reaction with nitrate. As the effluent from 1st step in the reactor was recycled into the 1st step, the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ increased. Because the zinc were detached from the cathode and concentration-polarization was decreased due to formation of turbulence in the reactor. The presence of $NH_4{^+}-N$ did not affect the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ but the addition of heavy metal decreased the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$. As chlorine is enough in wastewater, the simultaneous treatment of nitrate and ammonia nitrogen may be possible. The problem that heavy metal decrease the removal efficiency of $NO_3{^-}-N$ may be solved by increasing current density or using front step of electrochemical process for heavy metal removal.

  • The headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) followed by gas chromatography/mass spectrometry procedure has been developed for the simultaneous determination of petroleum aromatic hydrocarbons such as benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene and xylene isomers (BTEX) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in seawater. The advantages of SPME compared to traditional methods of sample preparation are ease of operation, reuse of fiber, portable system, minimal contamination and loss of the sample during transport and storage. SPME fiber, extraction time, temperature, stirring speed, and GC desorption time were key extraction parameters considered in this study. Among three kinds of SPME fibers, i.e., PDMS ($100{\mu}m$), CAR/PDMS ($75{\mu}m$), and PDMS/DVB ($65{\mu}m$), a $65{\mu}m$ PDMS/DVB fiber showed the most optimal extraction efficiencies covering molecular weight ranging from 78 to 202. Other extraction parameters were set up using $65{\mu}m$ PDMS/DVB. The final optimized extraction conditions were extraction time (60 min), extraction temperature (50), stirring speed (750 rpm) and GC desorption time (3 min). When applied to artificially contaminated seawater like water accommodated fraction, our optimized HS-SPME-GC/MS showed comparable performances with other conventional method. The proposed protocol can be an attractive alternative to analysis of BTEX and PAHs in seawater.

  • In order to find the best design of artificial stream for the riverbed filtration in multi-purpose filtration pond, a mathematical model was developed employing the energy line and the Manning's formula and was analyzed by the Euler's technique. Various design factors were investigated through scenario analyses of the artificial stream using the model. Results showed that the appropriate slope of the stream bottom was 2/10,000 and the appropriate infiltration rate at the streambed was $2.5m^3/m^2-day$ for the pond with the area of 100 ha, and that the Manning's roughness coefficient in this case was expected to be about 0.026 and the maximum water-depth was less than 1m. It was also shown that the longer the artificial stream the more advantageous it became for the riverbed filtration. Furthermore, results showed that it was not an efficient way to prevent clogging of the streambed by increasing the flow velocity of the stream and that the performance was higher near a weir with a large head drop.

  • OWEC (Overtopping Wave Energy Converter) is a wave power generation system using the wave overtopping. The performance and safety of the OWEC are affected by wave characteristics, such as wave height, period. To mitigate this issue, optimal OWEC designs based on wave characteristics must be investigated. In this study, the environmental conditions along the Ulleungdo coast were used. The hydraulic efficiency of the OWEC was calculated using SPH (Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics) by comparing 4 models that changed the substructure. As a result, it was possible to change the substructure. Through design optimization, a new truss-type structure, which is a substructure capable of carrying the design load, was proposed. Through a case study using member diameter and thickness as design variables, structural safety was secured under allowable stress conditions. Considering wave load, the natural frequency of the proposed structure was compared with the wave period of the relevant sea area. Harmonic response analysis was performed using wave with a 1-year return period as the load. The proposed substructure had a reduced response magnitude at the same exciting force, and achieved weight reduction of more than 32%.

  • Petrochemical is an energy consuming industry that consumes about 30% of total industrial energy consumption and is a representative carbon dioxide (CO2) emission source. Among them, the Naphtha Cracking Center (NCC), which produces ethylene, propylene, propane and mixed C4, consumes large amounts of energy and emits significant amounts of CO2. For this reason, an integrated techno economic- environmental impact assessment aimed at reducing energy consumption and environmental impact factors is necessary to ensure efficiency in terms of economics and environment. This study aims to analyze the efficiency of the heat exchanger network used in the existing NCC base on the pinch analysis and select an improvement plan that can reduced energy consumption. In order to reduces the utility consumption in the process, an optimal heat exchanger network considering the high-temperature and low-temperature stream was derived, and the economic evaluation was conducted by considering the trade-off between the reduction in utility consumption and the increase in heat exchanger installation cost. In addition, an environmental impact assessment was conducted on the reduced CO2 emission in consideration of the environmental aspect, and the economic environmental impact assessment used the payback period to recover the invested funds to come up with an energy saving plan that can be applied based on the actual process. As a result of considering the economic-environmental impact assessment, when the environmental impact assessment was not considered, it was 4.29 months, 3.21 months, and 3.39 months for each case, and when considering the environmental impact assessment, it was 4.24 months, 3.17 months, and 3.35 months for each case. These results appeared equally both when the environmental impact assessment was not include and when it was include. In addition, a sensitivity analysis was conducted for each case to determine how important factors affect the payback period. As a result of the sensitivity analysis, the cost of the heat exchanger was identified as a major factor influencing the overall cost.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) requires cooling system to maintain the proper operating temperature(about $65^{\circ}C{\sim}75^{\circ}C$) because the efficiency and power are affected by operating temperature. In order to retain the operating temperature of PEMFC, cooling system and coolant control logic are needed. Hardware-in-the-loop simulation(HILS) is one of effective methods to study and evaluate control algorithm. In this paper, the HILS system was designed to study the coolant control algorithm. The models of HILS system consisted of PEMFC, heat exchanger, and external environment associated with temperature. The hardwares in HILS system are 3-way valves, pumps, and a heat exchanger. The priority control and the control target temperature were investigated to improve the control performance using HILS. The 3-way valve in $1^{st}$ cooling circuit was selected as priority control target. The under limit value of $2^{nd}$ 3-way valve set as a function of PEMFC power and $2^{nd}$ circuit coolant temperature to correct temperature control performance. As a result, the temperature of PEMFC is stably controlled.

  • This paper proposes a floating-type wave energy conversion system that consists of a mechanical part (yo-yo vibrating system, motion rectifying system, and power transmission system) and electrical part (power generation system). The yo-yo vibrating system, which converts translational input to rotational motion, is modeled as a single degree-of-freedom system. It can amplify the wave input via the resonance phenomenon and enhance the energy conversion efficiency. The electromechanical model is established from impedance matching of the mechanical part to the electrical system. The performance was analyzed at various wave frequencies and damping ratios for a wave input acceleration of 0.14 g. The maximum output occurred at the resonance frequency and optimal load resistance, where the power conversion efficiency and electrical output power reached 48% and 290 W, respectively. Utilizing the resonance phenomenon was found to greatly enhance the performance of the wave energy converter, and there exists a maximum power point at the optimum load resistance.

  • When drilling operation is being performed, many physical and chemical changes are occurred near wellbore. To handle various changes of well condition and keep drilling process safe, additives of bulk, such as bentonite for increasing density of drilling mud, barite for increasing viscosity of drilling mud, polymer for chemical control, or surfactant, are added into drilling mud through a mud shear mixer. Because the achievement of the required material property through mud mixing system is essential to stabilize drilling system, it is of importance to analyze multi-phase flow during mud mixing process, which is directly related to increase mixing performance of the system and guarantee the safety of the whole drilling system. In this study, a series of liquid-solid flow simulation based on a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) are performed with comparing to solid concentration in experiment by Gilles et al. [2004] to understand the characteristics of liquid-solid mixing in a mud shear mixer. And then, the simulation-based design of shear mixer are carried out to improve mixing performance in a mud handling system.

  • In order to increase landfill gas (LFG) production with food waste leachate, this study was confirmed to be acidogenetic conditions for landfill site injection. Thereby, it was conducted for acidogenetic treatments to determine the decrease in viscosity and VFA production. After acidogenesis treatments, solubility of food waste leachate increased approximately 15%, and as a result, UASB and CSTR were similar by reactor type using the change of retention time. Based on the result of the change in viscosity by reactor type, efficiency of UASB showed approximately 11.38% of higher decrease in viscosity as $76.95{\pm}3.27%$ vs. CSTR. Also, VFA production showed the higher increase of 2.01 times (UASB) and 1.76 times (CSTR) respectively at the point of increasing retention time from 3 to 5 days. From the above results, efficiency of UASB in a reactor was relatively higher because large molecular lead to longer retention time than small molecular due to having screen effect in the fixed media.

  • The characteristics of a helical turbine to be used for tidal stream energy conversion have been numerically studied with varying a few design parameters. The helical turbines were proposed aiming at mitgating the well known poor cut-in characteristics and the structural vibration caused by the fluctuating torque, and the basic concept is introducing some twisting angle of the vertical blade along the rotation axis of the turbine. Among many potential controling parameters, we focused, in this paper, on the twisting angle and the height to diameter ratio of the turbine, and, based on the numerical experiment, We tried to propose a configuration of such turbine for which better performance can be expected. The three-dimensional unsteady RANS equations were solved by using the commercial CFD software, FLUENT with k-${\omega}$ SST turbulence model, and the grid was generated by GAMBIT. It is shown that there are a range of the twisting angle producing better efficiency with less vibration and the minimum height to diameter ratio above which the efficiency does not improve considerably.
