  • Naval maintenance system carries out repairs of battle ships. Korean Navy has four maintenance stations to maximize the readiness of the battle ships. Since each station can provide different services according to characteristics(specific size of ships, type of maintenances) and the maintenance ability of stations is predetermined, it has been one of complex problems for the Korean Navy to find the optimal resource allocation. We investigate the operation of the stations from the perspective of the human resource allocation which plays crucial role in the performance of the maintenance stations. Using a queueing model and optimization technique, we present a way to derive the optimal personnel allocation which minimize the waiting number of battle ships at each station, leading to the improvement of the military readiness in the Korean Navy.

  • Impatience characteristics are an important factor to be considered in the defense field, which is sensitive to time, but there are not many cases applied. In addition, due to the difficulty of analysis that must consider various probabilistic factors (breakdown/maintenance distribution, impatience characteristics, etc.), military decision makers consider only simple data (number of occurrences per year, maintenance time, etc.) Therefore, in this study, a model capable of analyzing the performance of the emergency maintenance system for determining the appropriate size and organization of military and civilian maintenance personnel was presented in consideration of impatience characteristics and probabilistic factors. And through numerical analysis, the appropriate size of the military and civilian emergency maintenance teams was analyzed. This study is significant in that it can improve readiness of operational power and prevent waste of defense budget through efficient operation of the military's emergency maintenance system.

  • Preventive maintenance is required for best performance of facilities in large scale industry. Ultimately, the efficiency of production is maximized by preventing the failure of facilities in advance. Typically, regular maintenance is conducted manually; however, it is hard to prevent repeated failures. Also, since measures to prevent failure depend on proactive problem-solving by the facility expert, they have limitations when the expert is absent or diagnosis error is made by an unskilled expert. Alarm system is used to aid manual facility diagnosis and early detection. However, it is not efficient in practice, since it is designed to simply collect information and is activated even with small problems. In this study, we designed and developed an automated preventive maintenance system based on expert's experience in detecting failure, determining the cause, and predicting future system failure. We also discussed the system structure designed to reuse the expert's knowledge and its applications.

  • The scheduling of planned maintenance problem of a system consisting of a number of components was studied. The purpose of maintenance scheduling is to minimize the cost of maintaining long-term operations. On the system side, the cost of a system shutdown can be minimized by grouping and inspecting a number of components. In addition, proper inspection cycles can be selected for each component to identify the failure sufficiently early to minimize the cost of the failure. To reduce the complexity of the calculations, the 'base interval approach' used in previous studies was applied and, in addition, the inspection cost savings from simultaneous inspections of multiple components were considered. To compare the effectiveness of inspection cost savings, this paper presents the results of simulation analysis performed by referring to the cases in the existing studies.

  • Devices have a lot of small breakdowns rather than big breakdowns. But it often wastes time and increases cost of maintenance, such as calling a service technician for small breakdowns. So, if we use remote control and monitoring service using Internet of Things, we can minimize the time period and cost for the maintenance. However, security is important because remote control and monitoring services contain personal information which when leaked, may be dangerous. There are many types of Internet based monitoring devices that are in use, but it is difficult to expect a high level of security because there are many cases in which the performance is minimal. Therefore, in this paper, we classify remote control and monitoring services based on Internet of Things type and derive encryption requirement for four types. We also compared and analyzed the lightweight cryptographic algorithms that can be expected to use high performance even on the Internet of Things. And it is derived that LED is used as a equipment management type, DESLX as a environment management type, CLEFIA as a healthcare management type and LEA as a security management type are the optimal lightweight cryptographic algorithms for each type.
