This paper presents a laboratory investigation into the effects of fillers using industrial by-product such as coal ash, IGCC slag on properties of hot-mixed asphalt concrete variation with filler content. For comparison, existing mixture with lime and dust have also been considered. Marshall and flow test has been considered for the purpose of mix design as well as evaluation of mixture. Other performance tests such as indirect tensile strength test, tensile strength ratio(moisture susceptibility), dynamic stability have also been carried out variation with filler content. It is observed that the mixes with industrial by-product exhibit conform with quality standard. Therefore, it has been recommended to utilize industrial by-product based on fly ash wherever available, not only reducing the produce cost but also partly solve the industrial by-product utilization and disposal problem.
Marshall stability and flow don't reflect mechanical property of asphalt mixtures and have little correlation with rutting-related performance. There is often rutting occurred on the asphalt pavement which was constructed using a mixture passing the specification for stability and flow. This study dealt with comparison of volumetric properties of mixtures from Marshall mix design and from Superpave mix design. This study used one binder, three aggregates and two gradations. The mixtures were manufactured by each mix design method. Result showed that OAC, VMA and VFA by Marshall mix design were higher than those by Superpave mix design. This is because Mashall mixture has the gradation prone to rutting and it should be further investigated whether or not the high OAC is direct cause of rutting in asphalt pavement.

This study was carried out to design the optimum mixing ratio of aggregate, cyclic aggregate, and binder (moisture, emulsified asphalt, and emulsion type additives) and produce recycling cold asphalt paving mixture satisfying site work standard. The cyclic aggregate satisfying KS F 2572 was collected from waste asphalt by adequate processing. As the moisture content increased, the shearing strength was decreased. The maximum marshall stability was shown at the 3.0 wt% moisture content. So the optimum moisture content was 3.0 wt%. The marshall stability and flow value with the amount of emulsified asphalt was satisfied in the range of 0.5~2.5 wt%, and the porosity was satisfied in the range of 0.7~2.5 wt%. So the optimum amount of emulsified asphalt was 1.6 wt%. The optimum amount of emulsion type additive was 0.1 wt% in the light of marshall stability and degree of saturation of recycling cold asphalt mixture.
The objective of this research is to evaluate engineering properties of recycled aggregates, slag as coarse & fine aggregate and waste foundry sand(WFS) as fine aggregate, in hot mix asphalt(HMA). In this research, soundness, gradation and particle analysis, abrasion, specific gravity and absorption test were carried out. The optimum asphalt binder content(OAC) for various HMA combinations of recycled aggregate was determined by Marshall Mix Design. The ranges determined is between 7.2% and 7.5%. Indirect tensile test, resilient modulus test, creep test were carried out for characterization of rutting behavior of various combination of HMA. Judging from the limited tests, the HMA with recycled aggregates is not as good rutting resistance as the HMA with common aggregates. After finishing the Wheel tracking test, the application or feasibility for the use of recycled aggregate as asphalt paving material will be determined.
The Marshall mix design method used in Korea, which was described in the design & construction regulation, had been introduced from Japan Highway Cooperation standard guide. Most engineers have thought that it is the major reason that causes pavement distresses. Therefore, there is a need to modify the current Marshall mix design through using the volumetric design concept, which is most widely used in asphalt mix design. The modified mix design determines the preliminary optimum asphalt content at 4% VTM (Voids in Total Mix). If the Marshall properties, which are VFA, VMA, stability, and flow, were satisfied with the requirements, the preliminary optimum asphalt content is determined as the final optimum asphalt content. The modified Marshall mix design considers VMA. while the current Marshall mix design does not consider VMA. By considering the Marshall stability and flow as the criteria instead of design factors, the modified Marshall mix design is able to decrease the errors occurred in Marshall stability test The test was performed to compare the Marshall properties between current and modified Marshall mix design. The left results showed that there was no difference in the Marshall properties, except for VTM. Thus, the modified Marshall mix design can produce the asphalt mixtures with the constant VTM (4%), and it can improve the asphalt mixture quality in Korea.

The presented work provided a predictive equation for dynamic modulus of hot mix asphalt, which showed higher reliability and more simplicity. Lots of test result by UTM at laboratory has been used to develop the precise predictive equation. Evaluation of dynamic modulus for 13mm and 19mm surface course and 25mm of base course of hot mix asphalt with granite aggregate and two asphalt binders (AP-3 and AP-5) were carried out. Superpave Level 1 Mix Design with gyrator compactor was adopted to determine the optimum asphalt binder content (OAC) and the measured ranges of OAC were between 5.1% and 5.4% for surface HMA, and around 4.2% for base HMA. The dynamic modulus and phase angle were determined by testing on UTM, with 5 different testing temperature (-10, 5, 20, 40, & $55^{\circ}C$) and 5 different loading frequencies (0.05, 0.1, 1, 10, 25 Hz). Using the measured dynamic modulus and phase angle, the input parameters of Sigmoidal function equation to represent the master curve were determined and these will be adopted in FEM analysis for asphalt pavements. The effect of each parameter for equation has been compared. Due to the limitation of laboratory tests, the reliability of predictive equation for dynamic modulus is around 80%.

This study was performed to evaluate performance of polymer-modified asphalt mixtures and specially designed reinforcement techniques against reflection cracking of the asphalt pavement overlay. Selected polymers were used for asphalt modification and polyester fiber, a polypropylene film (vinyl) and a grid were used for mixture reinforcement. Using the asphalt mixture with optimum asphalt content, a slab was made and cut into two pieces of specimen. A layer of grid or vinyl was placed at the bottom of specimen to strengthen the pavement layer against crack. A repeated loading was applied to the asphalt mixture specimen which is Placed on a cement concrete with a pseudo-crack. Crack propagation under repeated loading was monitored and effectiveness of the devised crack retarding techniques was evaluated. From the test results. a significant retardation of mode I crack progress was monitored from some of the modified and reinforced asphalt mixtures.

This study evaluates the laboratory properties of asphalt binder and mixture modified with R-EPDM(Recycling Ethylene Propylene Dien Monometer), which consists of R-EPDM as a main ingredient that is an industrial by-product made by manufacturing waste EPDM below 50 mesh as an additive. Superpave system was used to determine the PG(Performane Grade) and evaluate the property of R-EPDM modified binder. OACs(Optimum Asphalt Contents) of R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures were determined by Superpave mix design using gyratory compactor and wheel tracking test and moisture susceptibility test were carried out with R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures at OACs. The results from these tests, rutting-resistance and freezing and thawing resistance by moisture susceptibility of R-EPDM modified asphalt mixtures were superior to one of general asphalt mixtures(AP-5).
