  • The interest of the fatigue life of rubber components such as engine mounts is increasing according to the extension of warranty period of the automotive components. Automotive engine mounts get damaged due to thermal and mechanical loadings. This paper discusses a fatigue life prediction of the 3-dimensional dumbbell specimens for natural rubber compound considering the effects of maximum strain and heat aging temperature. Displacement controlled fatigue life tests were performed using specimens with different levels of maximum strain and various hardness. The basic mechanical properties test and the fatigue test of aged rubber specimen under normal and elevated temperature were executed. A procedure to predicted the fatigue life of vulcanized natural rubber material based on the maximum strain method was proposed, and then this curve was in good agreement with fatigue test data less than 200% error range.

  • Engineering structures including civil infrastructures require a life-cycle cost and benefit during their service lives. The service life of a structure can be extended through appropriate inspection and maintenance actions. In general, this service life extension requires more life-cycle cost and cumulative benefit. For this reason, structure managers need to make a rational decision regarding the service life management considering both the cost and benefit simultaneously. In this paper, the probabilistic decision tool to determine the optimal service life based on cost-benefit analysis is presented. This decision tool requires an estimation of the time-dependent effective cost-benefit under uncertainty to formulate the optimization problem. The effective cost-benefit is expressed by the difference between the cumulative benefit and life-cycle cost of a deteriorating structure over time. The objective of the optimization problem is maximizing the effective cost-benefit, and the associated solutions are the optimal service life and maintenance interventions. The decision tool presented in this paper can be applied to any deteriorating engineering structure.

  • The lifespan of bats is longer compared to that of other similarly sized mammals, and it is recorded that some bats' lifespan is more than 30 years. However, it is known that the lifespan of Pipistrellus abramus using human residential areas as their habitats is less than five years. We have put aluminum rings on the forearms of 284 P. abramus starting from 2008. Interestingly, in June 2018, a female adult bat was recaptured ten years after the aluminum ring was attached. The results of this study on the lifespan of P. abramus is new and it's likely to form the baseline for lifespan studies and habitat management of P. abramus in the future.

  • Most existing clustering protocols have been aimed to provide balancing the residual energy of each node and maximizing life-time of wireless sensor networks. In this paper, we present the threshold based cluster head replacement strategy for clustering protocols in wireless sensor networks. This protocol minimizes the number of cluster head selection by preventing the cluster head replacement up to the threshold of residual energy. Reducing the amount of head selection and replacement cost, the life-time of the entire networks can be extended compared with the existing clustering protocols. Our simulation results show that our protocol outperformed than LEACH in terms of balancing energy consumption and network life-time.

  • This paper deals with manufacturing conditions to increase the working die's life span which are the key factor in the manufacturing process of the coins and medals. Using the boundary element method, the stress diagram for the coining die was obtained, which was used to find the life span of working die. To iud the working die's life span related to the diameter of collar and blank coin, eight different sizes were tested and the optimal condition was obtained. With the adjusted impressing force, the working die's life span was increased up to 60 percent.

  • Endurance of ship hull can be estimated by existing regulations and fatigue estimation methods. These can be applied to the hull materials that are recommended by ship regulations but can't be applied to new materials. In this study, structural force in the worst sailing condition is obtained by the acceleration measurement test of small polyethylene boat and the endurance of small polyethylene hull is estimated by rainflow cycle counting method and linear cumulative damage rule. Maximum Von-Mises stress on the polyethylene boat is 1.8MPa and much lower than the fatigue strength of at least 5.9MPa for the fatigue life of $1{\times}10^9$ cycles. Fatigue life of the polyethylene boat hull is estimated to be 6,229 years.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the detrimental effects of decapping and emasculation on the postharvest quality and the vase life of cut Cymbidium flowers with or without 1-Methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) and Aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) treatments. The vase life treated by 1-MCP 150 ppb for four hours regardless of decapping or emasculation was significantly prolonged 12 days more. Ethylene production in the treatment without 1-MCP began to be raised from 7days, 1-MCP treatments, regardless of the concentration of processing did not occur until 15days. Ethylene began to production when the lip began to coloration. Compared to the 1-MCP effect, the AVG treatment of 0.5 and 1mM for four hours prolonged the vase life about nine days more. Whereas, the only decapping or emasculation treatments were effective to more three days longer in the vase life of cut Cymbidium' Halleluiah' flowers. 1-MCP treatment was very beneficial for Cymbidium 'Halleluiah' cut flowers than AVG.
